chris, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

With FEP-c118 there is currently an extension to the activitypub protocol in the works to allow setting a license on posts. If you don’t add a license info in your posts the licensing is unclear. I think that some jurisdictions give a default copyright and some protections to the author but I don’t know how that works.

With the fediverse you you have as much or as little rights as when you put it on your private blog without explicit licensing. If someone uses your works without your consent you still have to find out and you have to protected your rights yourself.

There are currently no lemmy or kbin instances that have monetization options. The only ActivityPub software I know that can show ads is misskey.

In the end you have to be aware that any kind of open social network is like screaming your thoughts towards a big crowd. You lose most of your control over it the second it’s out. It is nearly impossible to track who has the information and who shares it with others.

There are legal protections in some parts of the world but even then you first have to find out that something bad happened. If an instance were to start monetizing data it would probably cut off pretty fast and all the communities would probably move.

Still if there is stuff you don’t want everyone to know don’t post it publicly.

HeartyBeast, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Go and have a chat with them. Perhaps as a half joke buy them a really nice pair of slippers for Christmas.

As an aside, I did once share an upstairs flat with a woman who had a prosthetic leg. We had wooden floors. The people downstairs were not amused, though she tried to move around as quietly as possible

NightAuthor,

I just keep thinking about how I’d do it, I’m so confrontation averse. Bc we’re in a mid rise, I don’t even know who they are or what they look like, which is another variable to add to my anxiety about such an interaction.

Last night I was thinking, what if I left myself a reminder to write them a note when I’m not actively aggravated, and just left it in their mailbox. /shrug

As noted by another comment, it’s kinda pathetic

Kolanaki, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Earthquakes are the only things I’ve ever had to worry about where I live. The preparation other than basics for any emergency is (hopefully) handled by the construction companies that built my home and the surrounding buildings, since this is California and making buildings earthquake proof is a requirement here. Unless a super quake hits or something. Then I plan to move to the Eastern coast of the state. 😎

vanveen, in why is it so difficult select text from posts?

I checked on f-droid and Google play and I could not find Avelon

Chainweasel,

I looked it up out of curiosity, it’s Apple only. First result on Google was for the Apple store.

Cocodapuf, in Why is there no community devoted to vinly preservation?

Because CDs exist?

Rebels_Droppin,
@Rebels_Droppin@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but how about the artists that pressed their recordings only on vinyl? There are scores of artists that may have only made a couple thousand records and will be lost to time without people saving them.

TheInsane42, in Why is this sub so against jokes and more lighthearted posts?
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Sub? Where’s the sub? Battle stations!!! Arm the torpedoes and depth charges!!! :D

We haver loads of communities for messing about, memes and just general banter. I think this community as well as !nostupidquestions and loads of others are for more serious questions.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

No! They’re Magazines!

Sub as in sublemmy… That’s what I call communities here lmao

zxqwas, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?

Got non perishable food for about a week at home.

-40 temperatures every few years. I live in an apartment so I’m not allowed to install a fireplace and can’t really make changes to the heating system. Got a heap of candles that could keep a small room above freezing for a day or two.

Excessive amounts of snow. 4WD and can work remotely.

MacNCheezus, in What is your unpopular flim opinion
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Most movies are incredibly dumb and boring.

GentlemanLoser,

Give us an example of one you do like!

MacNCheezus, (edited )
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Hmm, so I like movies that kinda play with your expectations and turn out to go into a completely different direction than you’d expect.

Dragon (2011) with Donnie Yen is a good example. You think you’re getting another Kung Fu flick, but it turns out to be more of a detective story of almost Sherlock Holmes-style complexity.

Yes there’s kung fu but it’s mostly esoteric and there’s only a few fights, but it’s still a fascinating movie.

PlasterAnalyst, in Why is this sub so against jokes and more lighthearted posts?

There's a lot of Germans.

toastus,

Zis it outrageous!
We tschermans have very good humor, ja?A few days ago, I asked a philosopher to think for me, ja? He said he Kant. Isn't that funny?! KANT!

zxqwas, in Do you have a heat pump? Is it noisy?

Visited family for new years and slept next to one. It made about as much noise as their fridge. It’s most likely a newer model.

gregorum, (edited ) in What are some generational differences between millennials and Gen Z ?

Me, reading these comments, laughing in GenX

SirSamuel,

Who?

(Lol jk fellow GenXer)

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Oh we’re well aware of who you are, you’re the last generation of boomerism.

Forgotten generation title doesn’t last when the next generation doesn’t forget you.

SirSamuel,

Let the 20th century’s middle children have their joke. Comon, it was a little goof and you come in guns blazing. Relax, save your energy for fighting something that matters.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be over here rubbing IcyHot and cannabis lotion on my joints as I quietly await an early death

Piecemakers3Dprints, in Do we have enough coders to collaborate on an extension like this?
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar

How is this any different from using your favorite Lemmy client and simply watching whatever Piped, etc. vid within it?

Also, I second the “learn to code” sentiment. Otherwise, what exactly are you bringing to the table? Cash?

nix,
@nix@merv.news avatar

When you’re on YouTube/piped it automatically embeds the comments under the description. I think it’s obvious why that’s better than manually searching all of lemmy for each thread that has the same link

Appoxo,

zxqwas, in Does wind power cause visual pollution in your opinion?

Yes. I would not want a row of them in my way looking out over the wilderness that I live next to.

Looking out over the town or farmland I don’t really care.

ada, in Out of all the cars you've owned, which one holds a special place in your heart as the absolute favourite.
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve never owned a car and likely never will, and honestly, that fact holds a special place in my heart

stoy,

I can relate, before I got my own car, I prided myself on not needing it.

But having a car has enabled me to do way more than before, I am a hobby photographer, and being able to get to the airport for some planespotting in 40 min is way, way better than needing 2h with public transport.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Let’s just say I’ve raised a child who is now an adult, all without a car. By now, I know the inconveniences and opportunities it costs me well, but for me, they’re just not enough of a reason.

vanveen, in why is it so difficult select text from posts?

I am using Voyager, which compared to the previous client I was using is remarkable, beside this and other features that don’t work in an intuitive way or maybe don’t work at all.

Which phone/os are you using? I am using a Google Pixel phone and I can swipe up and see the option to select any text.

Click on the three dots in the top left corner, then “select text”.
