berlincruising, in Lemmings without bidet: how do you deal with your period?

Just have a penis! Duh!

But really, I live in savage no-bidet land, but thankfully I have a handheld shower head that I can just use sitting on the corner of the tub. When I didn’t have a tub, I just squatted, but it’s not nearly as easy

TheGalacticVoid, in How to stop eating junk food?
  1. Make sure you don’t have any mental disorders that you aren’t aware of. Watch actual doctors (like Dr. K) on YouTube to figure this out. You’d be surprised how subtly a disorder can impact the rest of your life.
  2. Do something more fulfilling. A decent chunk of the stuff you watch isn’t helpful and doesn’t satisfy you, so it’s probably better to watch some really good movies/videos/shows so that you give it your full attention. If that doesn’t work, find hobbies that do capture your attention.
Destraight, in As an adult, what seemingly childish things do you get excited about?

Money, if you show me money I will get excited and happy

Strobelt, in As an adult, what seemingly childish things do you get excited about?

I love just sitting and watching the rain. The fresh smell after a strong rain. The way everything gets cooler and darker just before to end in a myriad of colors afterwards.

ouRKaoS,

To continue from this:

Puddles. I love seeing big puddles and how they reflect things, watching them ripple in the wind & get distorted.

Also driving through them and making a huge splash; never fails to make me smile!

Gerula, in How to stop eating junk food?
  • don’t buy the junk.
  • don’t snack, you’re not 6 months old to need to eat at 3 hours interval.
  • during the transition period try to find alternatives like carrot sticks or whatever.
  • don’t eat at TV or equivalent, eat only at the dinning table when you decide and without distractions.

Good luck

Albatross2724, (edited ) in I am to celebrate new years eve alone. How can I celebrate solo?

I’ve spent holidays alone or travelling in the past. I also enjoy watching streamers on Twitch like Will Neff who do weekly movie nights, watches entertaining YouTube videos like Roll For Sandwich, and shows like Survivor on stream. His discord community hosts a variety of events when he’s not streaming. At any given point you can usually catch his community members watching movies together in a voice call or just while chatting. My suggestion would be to find a streamer that you enjoy watching or a community that participates in events together on mediums like discord.

That or just get sucked into a really good show. Whatever works for you

Sagar, in What are your "poor person" money life hacks?

I’m not poor but this always helps everyone. Wait for a while before you buy the thing off your shopping list. Wait for a week and reconsider whether you indeed need it.

If the answer is still yes, buy it. It is a must do for expensive things. Never break this rule for any massive purchase like a car or something!

turkelton,

That’s not a bad idea

BestBouclettes,

Also, there’s a big difference between being able to pay for something and being able to afford something.

Empricorn,

Thank you! Wish my last girlfriend understood this.

I could pay for her, but I couldn’t afford her…

M500,

If you add an item to your cart but don’t buy it right away, you will sometimes see a discount that it meant to encourage you to buy it.

waz,

To add a light structure to this approach I always liked the “wait $100 a day” approach. Want to buy something that costs $300. Wait three days after you have decided you want it. Want to buy something over $1000, think about it for a couple weeks. A $50 impulsive purchase, maybe think about it over lunch.

Bizarroland,
@Bizarroland@kbin.social avatar

Be right back, waiting 10,000 days before I buy that house

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

With no offense intended, I don’t think you’re as poor as you think you are

TheSaus,

Yea for me every extra hundred is at least a couple days, even a $20 item usually sits in the cart until i make a decision on if i actually need/want it enough to warrant it

waz, (edited )

You are not wrong. I’ve been pretty fortunate in my adult life and I’ve adjusted the threshold as I go. Really the point is to slow down your decision making and reduce impulsive purchases.

…also, thank you for calling me out. I grew up pretty poor, and didn’t ever make much more than minimum wage until I was over 30. I think I internalized the frugal lifestyle as part of my identity during that time, and I often forget that is not my situation anymore. I appreciate the occasional reminder to be more grateful of my current privilege.

garbagebagel,

Interesting I guess this is why my partner does this. Kind of drives me nuts though because then we’ll have something on the list for months and he keeps putting it off until I finally just go on my own to buy it because I actually need it. Obviously not for big purchases but for stuff we don’t use often like flour or jam or something.

Growing up my parents sheltered me a lot more from the financial instability we faced, his did not and he’s still stuck in survival mode even though we are past it, so we have very different spending habits.

fruitycoder,

I try to never buy something the same day I learn of it. I’ll take someone’s business card, look it up online, comeback later, etc. that way it’s only if I really care about it and not just feeling pressured or spending money for fun (buying stuff feels like an accomplishment, but the feeling never lasts).

Sagar,

My suggestion is only for things, not people.

fruitycoder,

I’m not sure what you mean here. I can only think the confusion is on business cards, where I am from it common for little shops and individual vendors to have business cards to look them up later. Sales people for big things too like cars, and houses.

Sagar,

Ok. I thought you meant some other thing. Nvm

fruitycoder,

No worries!

LetterboxPancake,

I was looking for a new car (leasing) and kept checking different for some weeks until I stumbled upon one offer that was 100€ less than any other while being essentially the same (power, space, etc). That was nice and I don’t really care about brands as long as they are somewhat reliable.

Shelbyeileen, in What is your favorite anthropology documentary?
@Shelbyeileen@lemmy.world avatar

I’m definitely showing my age here, but the team who made Walking With Dinosaurs created a while line of “walking with” and, while the CG DEFINITELY did not hold up, the science is still pretty decent.

  • Walking with Monsters (pre-dinos)
  • Walking with Dinosaurs
  • Walking with Beasts (post-dinos)
  • Walking with Cavemen

The latter, over 100 scientists worked on to try and make it as accurate as possible.
Don’t watch the 'Chased by Sea Monsters" one though… for some reason, they changed up the formula and had a guy pretend he was traveling back in time and doing a Steve Irwin on the marine reptiles. It’s just terrible.

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Did you watch Prehistoric Planet last year? The CG in that series is gorgeous

dumdum666, (edited ) in Why is *all* of Lemmy filled with Anti Israel content?

Of course you will get downvoted because there is no nuance with those people (often Tankies or „anticolonional“/„antiimperial“ leftists) and when they hate on „Israel“ and „Zionism“, they more often than not, mean „Jews“.

And exactly those people are part of the reason that Jews are scared for their life all over the world.

As someone that considers himself a leftist, even by European standards, I am honestly disgusted by those people. I think „those people“ are willing to betray left values as long it is about Israel or Jews. Many of them even lack basic human empathy as long as „only“ Jews and/or Israelis are concerned.

Edit:

thanks @ElcaineVolta ! As you disapprove of my posts, I know I do the right things.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh whatever. I’m a Jew. Israel is committing genocide. It’s that simple. What they are doing is why I am scared for my life. Because they are radicalizing people against Jews through this genocide. Maybe you need a little empathy.

dumdum666,

I don’t care what you claim to be.

snek,
@snek@lemmy.world avatar

“Claim to be”? You sound like a sad sack of shit.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, sure, because finding out what actual Jews think wouldn’t make you feel so condescendingly paternalistic over us.

Th4tGuyII,
@Th4tGuyII@kbin.social avatar

There's plenty of nuance to be had here, but there's a clear cut reason as to why many are steering towards Anti-Israel, and it's not Judaism.

It is true that Hamas has slaughtered innocent civilians, and Israel absolutely had to respond...

But how on Earth can you sit there and side with a country who's reaction to a terrorist attack was to commit human rights violations and start a genocide against innocent civilians of that nationality?

Do you mean to tell me that bombing hundreds of innocent Palestinians, and then cutting off essential water and electricity to many more is a warranted response to any of this?

Also, since I keep seeing this - stop with the "Anti-Israel = Anti-Semite" crap - Israel is a Jewish state, not Judaism itself. This is the equivalent of saying Saudi Arbia represents all of Islam because of Mecca, or that the Vatican city represents all of Christianity.

Criticising Israel for playing a game of morality limbo with the Hamas isn't an attack on Judaism, nor is it advocating for any kind of hatred towards Jewish people.

Though let's be honest, if you won't even take a Jewish person's word for it that your take is shite, you're never gonna take mine.

Maeve,

Seems to me you’re willing to abandon left values when it pertains to Palestine.

AgentGrimstone, in What is your favorite part of the day?

Early morning, 5-7am. I like the cold air, empty streets, and the feeling like time has slowed down so I can enjoy it for a little while.

Lennnny, in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

Ukulele. It’s so easy to play, C is just one string! And they’re small enough to take in your carry on if you travel. I own 5…

droning_in_my_ears, in Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?

There’s Wusoup which claims to be random chat without the sleaze. I’ve not used it myself.

RebekahWSD, in Lemmings without bidet: how do you deal with your period?
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

I get a shot in my butt every three months so I don’t get my hell periods.

Before that, showers were hell because I had such heavy flows. Everything was just hell.

stackPeek, in After a lifetime against, I'm considering joining social media. Any advice?
@stackPeek@lemmy.world avatar

It’s better if you filter out and moderate the usage. Just because social media it’s bad doesn’t mean there’s no good part.
