InternetTubes, in Which Lemmy instance is your new favorite, and why?

You say a lot of things, but do you have evidence of them? Or is it just related to them doing what's actually required to avoid giving the people DDoSing them another means of taking them down, fake DMCAs based on communities hosted in other instances that promote breaking the law?

And before anyone gets any idea, if they tried doing the same because they are mad, expect for it to backfire. Spectacularly. As in you might want to think twice before moving directly into the servers hosting those communities. And that's not a threat, that's because anyone with a brain can read, specially those in the legal world who have jobs because there is literally a separate aspect of legal proceedings involved in collecting evidence called discovery where lots of people with brains are able to read and understand the same conversations you and me are able to understand for instances that might indicate aiding, abetting, and collusion, being able to discern them from the false accusations thereof as well.

NoIWontPickaName,

I hope in real life you don't come across as as much of a dick as you do here

InternetTubes,

As a dick who makes wild claims yet provides no evidence of them?

NoIWontPickaName,

Yes, that does factor into it quite heavily.

InternetTubes,

Well, considering they just decided to ban my account and delete all of my content on their server without even a warning for simply criticizing their terms of conduct, I guess you were right and I was an idiot for defending them.

ferrodegaragem, in What is an musical instrument would you like to know how to play?

Drums. It seems they’re really hard to learn, thought.

0ops, in Is it actually possible to change your personality

You probably already do, I know I’m not the same person I was years ago. I think it’s a good thing to be conscious of your personality going forward. My take is, you are you, therefore whatever you do is something you would do. So do what you want, don’t overthink it.

spacecowboy, in Any advice for someone who broke bones that need surgery to fix?

Do the work after the surgery. Don’t skip or be lazy with recovery. Do the work. You will not regret it.

I plan on that. Not looking forward to it, but I gotta take care of myself. I have lots of pets who depend on me.

Mightymouse, in Any advice for someone who broke bones that need surgery to fix?

It’s completely normal to be nervous.

You have more power than you think – you can ask people to pause during the lead up and post-op times, ask questions that you want, tell them your concerns.

Find lots of good media and other entertainment that makes you laugh!

Have a great recovery !

I have so many questions prepped already. My mom brought me a book and my current crochet project. My friends are also spamming me with memes.

“I’m just tired and bored with myself. Hey there, baby, I could use just a little help”.

Hadn’t heard it before no, but it’s not my favourite of covers I’ve heard. The original song itself is very nostalgic for me with childhood memory attached so I love it as is. Only as an adult did I find any real meaning in the lyrics though. Can easily be palmed off as a shallow pop song I guess, but it has depth to me.

LegionEris,

There is a deep, deep love for Springsteen in Americana and country. Elizabeth Moen does whole Springsteen shows dressed up like him and everything. Anyone who doesn’t see the depth in his lyrics isn’t looking. And Little Mazarn is probably my favorite band. I prefer their original songs, but awkward banjo girl and Jeff with the singing saw are a religious experience for me.

qyron, in What is an musical instrument would you like to know how to play?

There are precisely two instruments on this world I would try to learn:

  • the bag pipes

Because, to my knowledge, it it the most annoying instrument known to humanity. It’s loud, it’s screechy, it’s haunting, it’s everything hateful in a music instrument and yet it is so damn epic sounding.

  • the hurdy gurdy

Silly sounding name for an instrument capable of sending shivers down your spine.

It is also ridiculously cumbersome and unless you know what it is, the basic reaction to it is wondering if a piano, an accordion and a jack-in-the-box had a threesome and nature decided to create the musical instrument equivalent of the platypus.

I like this instrument so much I created a character for a story that is a necromancer bard, that conveys spells through the music of the hurdy gurdy.

glimse,

To learn to play the hurdy-gurdy, you must also learn how to repair the hurdy-gurdy

qyron,

Was I skillful enough, I would build mine. My favorite type is the large, cello-type body, with the characteristic deep tone.

glimse,

They’re very cool but reading about the maintenance scared me away lol

EpeeGnome,

This makes me want to learn the hurdy-gurdy even more! I mean, in reality, I’m never putting in the time to learn to play it anyway. So, in the fantasy of me being dedicated enough to learn to play an instrument, the added fantasy of me maintaining a finely tuned instrument is just added appeal.

whaleross,
@whaleross@lemmy.world avatar

Hurdy gurdy are pretty cool instruments but also loud as fuuuck.

I’d like to have one for accompaniment when my neighbour is predicting the violin and keep going when they are done.

commie, in What is an musical instrument would you like to know how to play?

“closed hole” flute: I have a tendency to pick up loud and obnoxious instruments. trumpet. diatonic harmonica. penny whistle. it would be cool to have a genuinely soft instrument. also, having skills that would transfer to piccolo:D

XYZinferno, in What piece of song lyric you can really relate to?

Without your love my life aint nothing but this carnival of rust

EDIT: Another line I find to fit the bill, from the same song:

And more than ever, I hope to never fall, where enough is not the same it was before

otter,

Maybe don’t do this though

craftyindividual,

I was always told this story with ending that he became a monster after starting life mild mannered. The actual accounts conflict each other depending who was being asked about him… I can’t imagine having half the prefrontal cortex blasted out leaves you with better judgement though?

Anatoli Bugorski is another case worth a look. No personality change though.

otter,

Woah, good that he survived and it’s impressive he continued to work in the field afterwards

As a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, Russian SSR, Anatoli Bugorski worked with the largest particle accelerator in the Soviet Union, the U-70 synchrotron. On 13 July 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment when the safety mechanisms failed. Bugorski was leaning over the equipment when he stuck his head in the path of the 76 GeV proton beam. Reportedly, he saw a flash “brighter than a thousand suns” but did not feel any pain. The beam passed through the back of his head, the occipital and temporal lobes of his brain, the left middle ear, and out through the left hand side of his nose. The exposed parts of his head received a local dose of 200,000 to 300,000 roentgens (2,000 to 3,000 Sieverts). Bugorski understood the severity of what had happened, but continued working on the malfunctioning equipment, and initially opted not to tell anyone what had happened.

craftyindividual,

Well, I suppose if he wasn’t traumatised he would have subsequently been extremely careful in the lab ;)
