LifeOfChance, in What's a food you forget you like? Then you eat it, and wonder why you don't buy it more often?

Idk what it’s called but my wife makes this chicken and pasta that uses parm garlic sauce and its 10/10. I know my issue is we make it then I over eat it which results in me hating it for a while and then the cycle repeats

BarrelAgedBoredom,

Sounds like chicken alfredo

LifeOfChance, (edited )

Nah, the chicken is slow cooked with the parm garlic sauce, cream cheese, some other kind of cheese, then some rigatoni. She adds a few other things as well.

NOOBMASTER, in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

bacteria might help

NaoPb, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

I always have my phone on silent mode and have messages turned off for most apps, so I’ll have to check them manually. This is less stressfull to me. I just get to relax without being bothered.

So I think I prefer a regular watch since I don’t see the benefits of a smart watch in my situation.

Gallardo994, (edited ) in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

Chikhirtma is an awesome Georgian soup with cheese and all. Super awesome when you’re sick.

P. S. Also great if you’re hungover

3migo, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?
@3migo@lemmy.world avatar

Regular watch.

I find myself bombarded by notifications all day anyways, I don’t also want my wrist buzzing along with my pocket. Since I work from home, I have my phone out on my desk most of the time anyways, smartwatch doesn’t really add any value for me as I don’t care about the fitness data.

I’m also a watch enthusiast, so smartwatches don’t scratch that same itch as a traditional watch.

tierelantijntje, in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

When I have issues eating I go for non-offensive foods that are easy to swallow such as a can of white beans in tomato sauce, plain full fat Greek yoghurt, oatmeal made with milk and not water, lentil soup. I sometimes make 1000 kcalorie smoothies with half an avocado, 2 tbsp peanut butter, cup of 10% fat yogurt, a banana, 1/2 cup oatmeal and enough orange juice to make it liquid. Will not win any taste awards but does contain a bunch of good stuff.

governorkeagan,

I’ve done the smoothie before as well, not the same recipe but high calorie smoothies none the less.

vettnerk, in What's a food you forget you like? Then you eat it, and wonder why you don't buy it more often?

Green olives. None of my cooking use them as an ingredient, so once in a blue moon I remember that I like them, so I eat an entire jar with a toothpick.

itsathursday,

Have you tried Sicilian olives specifically? They almost have an umami flavour

vettnerk,

I may have, I don’t know enough about olives to tell. I usually just buy the biggest jar of castrated green olives that I can find here in scandinavialand.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

... I'm guessing Castelvetrano! Ha. Those are my favorite olives too.

Blackout,
@Blackout@kbin.social avatar

I throw them in my salads

vettnerk,

My “salads” are technically that due to having cucumber in them. But other than that it’s mostly just cheese which I don’t like with olives.

OhmsLawn,

I make sure I always have an unopened jar. As soon as I open it, I put another jar on the shopping list. Check out some Puerto Rican dishes. Arroz con Gandules, etc. Great use of green olives in those.

waz, (edited )

Disappointed I didn’t find the “30 to 40 olives” meme in the comments.

I guess I’ll have to link to it myself.

Stuffing.

Every Thanksgiving I eat stuffing and remember:

  1. This stuff is great
  2. There is nothing stopping me from making this year round

and then i immediately forget

stolid_agnostic,

In fairness, it’s not like you see it at the store all year round to remind you. Maybe get a couple boxes to have throughout the year? It’s certainly on sale right now, or at least will be at the end of December.

lobut,

I love other people’s stuffing. I made stuffing and gave myself food poisoning.

BrianTheeBiscuiteer,

When I make it rather than “mashed potatoes made of bread” it’s more like “slightly moist croutons”. Breaks my heart.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

By putting it inside a turkey or just somehow with stuffing?

lobut,

Yeah, I put it inside the turkey. I used a friend’s recipe, but it must have been a bigger bird and took too long to cook or something.

Okay, I just Googled it:

When you place stuffing inside a turkey, it comes into contact with raw meat and juices that may contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, it's fallen out of fashion because if you leave it there overnight especially bacteria can grow in it. Well, sorry to hear that. I like making homemade stuffing but I just bake it in a pan... i guess that's called dressing.

mwproductions,

Try microwaving it on high for several minutes (until it’s basically too hot to handle) before stuffing the bird.

It also helps if you don’t pack it in. It should get to 165°F to be considered safe.

idunnololz,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I made a bunch of stuffing not on Thanksgiving a few years ago. Was addicted to it and kept making it. But then ate it too often I got tired of it. This always happens to me though. I get excited about some food. Then I make it until I get tired of it and move on to the next thing.

rem26_art,
@rem26_art@kbin.social avatar

true true. There's definitely too much of a good thing.

shanjezi,

This is me, but also with like people and hobbies and my career

Mouselemming,

Pick up a box on sale and put it in the cupboard. It’s a useful base for some chicken pieces, or to make some vegetables into a casserole. Excellent with mushrooms. (Take into account the liquid that will be released by the cooking veggies, or else saute them first, before mixing with the stuffing)

This year, instead of a whole bird, I made Turkey Balls using 2 lbs ground turkey, 2 raw eggs, stuffing mix, then sauteed onion, celery, apple, mushrooms, (let cool before adding) Chardonnay, and cool broth. I added the usual spices, keeping in mind there’s already some in the stuffing. I piled them in a lidded casserole, but you can also bake them on a sheet pan and serve with dips.

rem26_art,
@rem26_art@kbin.social avatar

The turkey balls sound really good. Like a good way to get a whole Thanksgiving experience in a more compact package

Mouselemming,

Plus there’s the opportunity for jokes

Hybrid watch. Still has the hands for manual time reading but in the middle is an eInk display for notifications. I have to charge it about every 3.5 weeks which is amazing. (Fossil gen 6 Hybrid)

Being nice to waitstaff/receptionists/cashiers/etc, even if there’s an issue.

You can be annoyed at the situation, sure. But being nice to the employee shows you know that 99% of the time the problem is not their fault and 100% of the time yelling won’t solve anything.

Lemminary,

I have some extended family who does this. They’re not good people.

Blapoo, in What's a food you forget you like? Then you eat it, and wonder why you don't buy it more often?

Red cabbage!

OhmsLawn,

Absolutely. I’ll just go through quarters of that stuff without a second thought, but I never remember that when I’m at the store.

RBWells, in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

Nuts have a lot of calories in a small package, and as a migraneuse I can also verify that nuts and dried cherries are one of the least offensive things to deal with if you end up puking. If you have miso, miso soup is easy and gentle and tasty.

But mostly make sure you are drinking water with electrolytes. Your body can survive well without food calories for quite some time, and lack of appetite when sick may be a signal to fast and rest. Dehydration is much more likely and much more damaging.

Leftist political ideals, people who like cats, having similar sense of humor to me

BestBouclettes,

Liking cats can be a good indicator on how they understand and see consent. 👍

mojo,

I don’t see the connection

Valmond,

Neither does the cat IMO 😹

burliman,

Interesting thought, but I wouldn’t say these are dependent on each other at all.

BestBouclettes,

Well it’s obviously not an absolute truth, more of a good rule of thumb I think. It also depends on the reason they don’t like cats in the first place.

WeLoveCastingSpellz,

Yea also I like people who like cats because I like cats 👍

mojo,

I don’t see the connection

lucullus,

A dog will behave the same to interactions, that it doesn’t like, as cats: Leaving, telling (with their respective sounds), scratching, biting. Change cats in your sentence to any animal that is able to interact with humans (fish is difficult for example) and I would agree.

TheBlackLounge,

Liking cats and dogs are not mutually exclusive what’s everyone on about?

FishFace,

Come on, I prefer cats but the reason people prefer dogs is because they do consent to the kinds of interaction dog-lovers want to have with their pets. If someone doesn’t like cats because cats often don’t want to be petted all the time it just means that person wants a pet who wants to be petted.

Also I do things to my cats without their consent all the time: I give them medicine they don’t want, I use a vacuum cleaner, and I move them from places I don’t want them to be. They are animals, not humans, and how I interact with them is not a model for how I interact with humans.

BestBouclettes,

It’s a rule of thumb, not an absolute truth.

FishFace,

I’m not interpreting you as believing it’s an “absolute truth” I’m saying it doesn’t seem like it would bear any relationship whatsoever. You are still saying that as a rule of thumb dog-lovers are less likely to respect people’s (lack of) consent than cat-lovers. That’s insane.

Let’s be real about it: being a cat or dog person can tell you something about a person’s personality and hence give you a hint about whether you’ll get on with them. A green flag should first of all be universal, not dependent on the person considering it, and second it should actually be a reasonably accurate indicator.

jpreston2005,

actually they didn’t say anything about dog owners. You’re reaching for an argument where none exists.

hmph. must be a dog owner

FishFace,

Feel replace to replace “dog” with “non-cat” in my comment; it’s just as valid.
