House/techno DJing - I’ve got decks and about 800 records, but very very rarely have any time to practice as it’s nobody’s cup of tea! Oh well :-)

love this, thank you for sharing. after 33 years of life hiding and compensating for my perceived differences, earlier this year a healthcare professional finally diagnosed me with AuDHD. i have always had several surprising standout skillsets with which, as an adult, i have been able to monetize in order to support myself. but i have also always struggled severely in a number of unexpected areas that have a noticeable impact on my daily life. the context my diagnosis provides has been full of healing and understanding. i can be proud of my unique abilities and also accepting of my unique limitations.

it is super exciting to hear how another neurodivergent mind has learned to harness their gifts even amongst the obstacles. cheers!

Khrux, (edited ) in What are some dark sides to cute super-powers ?

A lot of people have read this question to mean the accurate scientific implications of everyday superpowers which isn’t really in the spirit of superpowers. I’ll try to say powers that feel generally altruistic or built for cute characters that have cruel implications.

Healing us the classic cute superpower, but if the user of the power chooses to overheal somebody they could probably cause basically mega cancer.

It’s pretty easy to imagine the the implications of controlling animals, and it’s a pretty good power to sit in the background as a utility power until the user decides to have every insect, rat and pigeon in the city bombard somebody.

The ability to share memories is hard to be used villainously but two fucked applications would be to beam somebody’s traumatic experience I to somebody else’s head (or an experience that happened to one person that could trigger someone else’s PTSD), or if the user has trained themselves to be able to alter their memories to fictional events on demand, turning what is basically a truth finding superpower into an abuse of perceived honesty.

Finally the superpower of using Reddit and Lemmy your whole life and generating a very standard way if responding but having the cruel and unusual twist of always sounding like fucking ChatGPT.

    Chetzemoka,

The power of healing could be used to infinitely torture someone without killing them. Definitely has a dark side.

All power must be applied ethically

    Fades, (edited )

The heal to cancer ratio is a perfect example, deepens the power itself too instead of being a superficial “you’re fixed now!” vibe

electric, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

Ads are what have been keeping the internet largely free. They don’t really bother me anyways. Both the creator/site/company and the consumer benefit from this transaction. If the ads make the experience unbearable though, easy enough to simply disengage from it.

    PlasterAnalyst,

If it's free then why do I pay ~$150/ month between phones and home service?

    @squid_slime@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the price of freedom my friend

    electric,

That’s an issue between you, your ISP, and your carrier.

    ShroOmeric, (edited )

Internet is not free, and there was plenty of cool stuff online well before everyone decided to make money out of every single thing. So no, bad argument.

Edit: Let me correct myself: there was much more cool stuff before.

    electric,

It costs money to host a website. And if the creator feels they are entitled to some money if people keep viewing their content, then that’s alright.

    ShroOmeric,

They are free to feel entitled. Good for them.

    Honytawk,

It costs about 15€ a year to have a domain, and a bit of electricity with server equipment depending on the size of your platform.

They can get the money by selling merch in their webshop or even like Wikipedia rely on donations.

It doesn’t need to be a whole datacenter, like Facebook. Better not to actually.

Viking_Hippie, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

My mom uses Edge, told me not to block Facebook ads and clicks on most of the clickbait articles on her MSN home page. It’s like she WANTS them to collect as much data to sell and spy on her as much as possible 🤦

    themurphy,

You’ll be surprised how many people likes ads, and likes how much they know about you.

I don’t agree, but I can see the logic in that. If you see ads anyway, why not see them specialised to you making them somewhat relevant.

Awful take I know, but it’s the reality for many people.

    GoosLife,

That’s not necessarily an awful take, to be fair. That is arguably to the benefit of the consumer, that they can learn about products that are relevant to them.

    Trainguyrom,

I’m completely disconnected from what new movies and TV shows come out after years of blocking all ads. I can see wanting to change but ads have only gotten more annoying so I have no desire to change yet

    BraveSirZaphod,
    @BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Personally, I get actually relevant Instagram ads pretty frequently, particularly for various events that I'm interested in. I've seen more than a few shows specifically because I saw an Instagram ad.

I'd naturally prefer no ads, but when they are necessary - and someone does have to pay the costs of running large platforms - I would prefer them to be actually relevant. It's still ultimately my decision as to whether I buy something or not.

ExtraMedicated, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

Game development. I do the coding, 3D art and animation, everything. I don’t know if I’ll ever even finsh another project, and it’s incredibly time-consuming, but I enjoy it.

    CaptDust, (edited )

Same, but honestly for me it is such a lonely existence. Even when I show off my projects to friends/family they can’t understand the effort that went into it… many seem to think there’s a “make racing game” button or something and I just added some textures or built a track.

I often wonder if I should pivot into wood working or something else, at least I’d have something tangible to gift or sell at the end. People just seem to appreciate things they can hold in their hands more.

    Valmond,

So what are you working on just now?

Ol’ gamedev making a no-graphics multiplayer game here :-)

    ExtraMedicated,

I have a GIF of a quick placeholder character I made a while ago (I kinda want to keep it though). I’m also hoping to make it multiplayer, but not sure if I’ll be able to optimize it enough to make it playable. https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/pyvdc8opqay.gif

    Valmond,

    Nice prototype start, good luck!

    ExtraMedicated,

    Thanks!

Viking_Hippie, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

I use uBlock Origin and Consent-o-Matic. Works like a charm!

    RazorsLedge,

Consent o matic is a new one for me. Thanks!

    Viking_Hippie,

    You’re very welcome!

    themurphy,

    One question though.

Can’t you enable a filter list on uBlock Origin that removes all cookie consents?

I think I have it on. It’s under “Annoyances”. Maybe it’s not as good since you have them both?

    the_post_of_tom_joad,

Can’t you enable a filter list on uBlock Origin that removes all cookie consents

What what what?!?! Ive used ublock for years and i didn’t know this

    themurphy,

Yeah haha, there’s actually some nice block lists in the settings you can turn on.

    Also region specifics.

    Viking_Hippie, (edited )

I’m sure there is, but tbh I don’t know how, since I don’t need it.

The way Consent-o-Matic works is that it accepts all, securely deletes all of it immediately before it can do anything. That way the site thinks you have all of it so it won’t ask again, but you actually get none of it.

All this plus removing the consent- and other pop-ups for you. A few of the nastier pop-ups might be on your screen for a tenth of a second or less as Consent-o-Matic gets rid of it for you, but otherwise it’s like they were never there to begin with!

    victorz,

Does it work better than “I don’t care about cookies”, if you’ve tried both?

    brb,

What is the difference between that and “I still dont care about cookies”?

    Honytawk,

That addon accepts all the cookies.

    Consent-o-Matic blocks all the cookies.

sagrotan, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

My father dying. Haven’t had very much contact, but the rest of the family expected some things from me apparently, still don’t know what exactly, I just left the hospital silently, like my father left my life when I was four. I’m not really affected by the whole ordeal, but it really really annoyed me over Christmas. That guy couldn’t even die without making a fuzz. 🙄

    Prethoryn,
    @Prethoryn@lemmy.world avatar

While I am a stranger and me saying sorry probably doesn’t help much. That stuff sucks and I am sorry you had to deal with it. People have it in their head that we are all supposed to love our family and just get along but people don’t realize that families are sometimes just people who didn’t love us or loved us less than we loved them or vice versa loved us more than we loved them. Family is tricky. It doesn’t sound like you were close and I don’t know your entire story but either way it is a loss and regardless of him not being there for you it says a lot that you were at the very least there for him. Which, in my opinion, is the most you can do.

I hope you are the person that carries that forward and uses that as a means to not walk out on others lives when they need you most and I hope in return they are a part of yours when you are on your way out of this world. Enjoy your holidays.

angstylittlecatboy, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Pizza. Every time I’ve tried it’s stuck to the stone and when I just got something to cook it was no better than the local place.

    TonyTonyChopper,

    did u add corn meal

    Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

    Hotter oven

    Drier dough

    Thinner crust

    Less sauce/ toppings

    Flour the pizza spatula

    skooma_king,

Try shaping and topping the pizza on parchment paper. After being on the hot stone for ~3 mins, you can just slide the paper out from under the pizza.

    0ops,

If you preheat the Stone and send the pizza off a wooden peal (which will take some practice, granted), the dough will start to crisp right away and it shouldn’t be stuck at all when you go to turn it in a few minutes. You don’t even need oil. Cooking cold pizza from a cold stone though, that makes sticking much more likely. Also like that other guy said, use a little bit of cornmeal and flour under the pie, or I hear you can use semolina flour, which is courser apparently.

Bebo, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

I have been using adguard dns on my phone for years. For the past one year or so also using adblockers on browser (Firefox). Used to watch youtube with ads. Got fed up moved to watching youtube in browser with adblocker, then finally moved to newpipe sponsor block when youtube started adblocker shenanigans. For pc I use cloud flare dns, regular adblockers (Firefox) and keep privacy and security settings on strict.
