Now lets look at Beehaw's technology community from lemmy.world:
On the one hand, this is not blocking 100% of the content from this community, which seems consistent with what I originally thought. Lemmy.world is not defederated with beehaw, so lemmy.world can see new content from Beehaw's communities.
But on the other hand, there is a ton of content missing. And it's not just federated content taking awhile to move from instance to instance, as I'm seeing posts from the last 24 hrs from Kbin that are not showing up on lemmy.world. So it appears that there is content that's being blocked from getting to lemmy.world. But it's not 100% of the content that's being blocked?
To make matters more confusing, I can see content published by Beehaw users on a Beehaw community from lemmy.world. Wtf is going on.
To make the ex metaphor. Talking shit about your ex is not productive but talking about what was wrong or didn’t work can be very insightful. Entirely blocking your ex out of your mind is a pretty easy way to make the same mistakes again.
I can see why people think it’s annoying but I think this is also a good thing. Talking about this helps people understand what they want to see in their communities or instances.
/all isn’t really all the fediverse though, it’s “all” from communities at least one user on your home instance has subscribed to.
If no one ever subbed or browsed there from your instance, it won’t show in /all.
It’s plausible some instances have different amounts of porn in their /all feed.
After moving here from lemmy.world after learning of their view on federation with Threads, I now face a dilemma which I do not have a clear answer to....
I totally get that but I want to grow Lemmy and want users to join Lemmy. They won’t if they could just subscribe to our communities. Plus I don’t want threads to benefit from my content if I post to instances federating with Threads
You are overthinking this. If you like green tea, but an instance admin prefers coffee, would you stop posting on every community on that instance? Do you only want to post where people 100% align with your views on everything? I guess not, because then you would have to host a private instance where you only talk to yourself. Therefore, stop overthinking this and keep posting there.
If the question whether somebody federates with Threads or not is THAT important to you, then you already have your answer.
Overall, I really hope we do not come to a point where thoughts like “my instance does not federate with $evilinstance, therefore it’s a good instance. But $otherinstance does, therefore $otherinstance sucks and I’ll avoid everything on $otherinstance” become the norm. Because then we get a clusterfuck.
Should I continue contributing to my niche communities on Instances I do not share my view with, or build similar communities on other Instances?
For example runeterra community only exists on lemmy.world, but I don’t want to post on lemmy.world anymore, because I don’t want Threads to benefit from my posts/comments. I want people to come to Lemmy.
Should I create a new runeterra community lemmy.ml instead (lemmy.ml blocks Threads)? What would you do?
There’s a really big difference though between communities splitting off Reddit and split from an instance here. I still have my Lemmy.world account but I’m defaulting now to this one. Lemmy.world is a great starting point for people to branch from and pick from there.
You can still access your communities without visiting the instance.
You made me realise I asked the wrong question. It’s all about Threads. I updated the title and my question. Thank you
As seen on my other comments, I want Lemmy to grow so we can have diverse communities and diverse viewpoints. Why would Threads users join Lemmy if they can just subscribe to instances federating with them. That is why I don’t want to post on instances federating with Threads anymore
I also don’t want Threads to benefit from my posts/comments
Would you still post to lemmy.world or you would create another community on lemmy.ml where Threads is blocked, if you were in my case?
In a way I'm glad this time around we're building our OWN instead of jumping into another centralized platform. If it happens again, we can just shard off and host out own instance and still follow all our favorite communities etc .... @Paesan
I'm a sucker at using the kbin / Lemmy search. I am still looking for these communities:
/r/atbge
/r/justfuckmyshitup
/r/catsareassholes
/r/thecatdimension
/r/KidsAreFuckingStupid
/r/cologne or / r/koeln
/r/parents or /r/eltern
/r/djs or /r/beatmatch
/r/house or /r/deephouse
There are probably more... If noone knows where these communities exist on Lemmy or kbin, I will create them! Maybe you can help me deciding on which instance it would be best. I can do lemmy.ml, lemmy.world, feddit.de and kbin.
Personally I recently did the same because lemmy.world didn’t commit to defederating meta and I didn’t want to stay there, but I am not very happy on .ml either, I get an insane amount of tankie crap on the all feed now and apparently no more nsfw posts.
I’m an anti capitalist myself but I strongly oppose the idea that someone preselects what communities are visible to me, on .world it felt much more organic and well rounded.
Ultimately I will just have to make my own instance i suppose.
I been trying to search and finally found lemmynsfw.com/c/gaybrosgonewild but I can’t add it anywhere. I searched but nothing pops up. And can’t find a place to subscribe. Follow the link from the LinkFixerBot so it’ll load that community whilst keeping you logged in on your instance, and you’ll see a big “Subscribe” button.
Your instance is defederated from lemmynsfw.com (scroll down to the bottom to see instances they are defederated from) so you won’t see any contant after they defederated. You might want to create a different account just to browse NFSW communities on instance like lemmynsfw.com.
Hello fellow Redditugee, I found Lemmy Explorer https://lemmyverse.net/communities to be very handy. I like the layout and the search/sort capability. The process I followed to subscribe to communities was to:
In Lemmy Explorer, click on the community@instance name (eg !maliciouscompliance), which automagically copies it to the clipboard.
Then in my home instance (aussie.zone) I clicked on the search icon (magnifying glass) and pasted the details into the search box.
I then click Next (not search).
The search will initially show “No Result” while it searched the Fediverse, but then the community will show up (I’m using dark mode so it shows up in green as a link).
I click on the link to open the community from my home instance and click on the subscribe button. Initially the community may be set to “Subscribe Pending” - I guess it needs to be reviewed. I’ve also managed to subscribe to Kbin magazines from Lemmy using this process. Note: this is on PC using Firefox
There absence of a few subreddits here in lemmy world are making my experience somewhat incomplete. I was really into r/noiserock on reddit and would like to help re-create that community. Ok, thanks. My instance is reddthat.com (relatively small I believe) and I don’t think I see a way to create a community. I will reach out to the instance admin and see if that is currently by design.

Think Automoderator but available to everyone (although bots would need some instance admin / community moderator approvals to prevent abuse)
