This is a chance for any users, admins, or developers to ask anything they’d like to myself, @nutomic , SleeplessOne , or @phiresky about Lemmy, its future, and wider issues about the social media landscape today....
First, I want to say thank you for the incredible job you already have done in this area. However, do you have any thoughts on further improving some fundamental Lemmy UX painpoints? Examples such as:
Can you add one to your list? Linking posts across instances? Like you can do !community@instance and the community will open viewed through your instance. But for linking posts there is no such equivalent. Like if I make an HTTP link it will be through my instance or possibly the one the community is hosted on which would be annoying for users of other instances.
Also, linking communities across instances is possible already, but you can leave it up since it’s confusing. I still see a lot of folks try to do the reddit approach if c/community
The big instances are bad enough but big communities are absolute killer of decentralisation
When you go to /c/books on your server, you don’t see an agglomeration of all /c/books on all servers of the fediverse. You only see that server’s /c/books, if it even has one.
This is a fatal flaw of lemmy which concentrates power enormously into the hands of the owners.
The default view should be all /c/books on all federated servers, with an easy way to filter only local posts.
Lemmy will turn into reddit if this is not quickly rectified.
I have seen this first hand. I think when someone hits report it needs to go to the moderator of the community. From there the mod should be able to forward it to where it needs to go.
Instance admins should be able to intersect this process.
I’ll say this is really clunky to do and often means being redirected to that instances site where you are no longer logged in. Mobile apps mostly solve this themselves, but its sometimes a pain on desktop. I’d like the ability to somehow group similar communities, but I’m fine if its like Multireddits or playlists on the user end.
Stupid mods, well one of them, refuse to even look at a dictionary definition of the word troglodyte and prefers to stick to the idiotic method of using Wikipedia as an encyclopedia. End result is that I was banned for calling living humans troglodytes even though there are communities in Tunesia and China (and I supplied links,...
I’m fine on Lemmy.zip. TBH, it seems to be the instance where I see more of Lemmy than on any other instance. Guess that’s because they don’t really block many others or not many block them. My gripe is the censorship on that community especially since it seems to be the only active political community I’ve found with my shitty search skills. I’m sure there are other communities that censor like the authoritarian instances beehaw and lemmy.ml for example, but I haven’t really run into them yet.
Yet insisting I am calling them a prehistoric cave dweller and subhuman when I am providing proof otherwise is exactly what they criticize Trump and his cohorts of doing. That’s the kind of juvenile bs that goes on in high school, on Facebook, and in Elon Musk;s house.
BTW, I wasn’t banned from the instance, I was banned from the community.
I saw some weird pro-reddit content on other reddit-themed communities and then !snoocalypse went into archive mode, so I decided to make this to keep it clean from any reddit shills lurking in the dark. I’ll start by posting some historical content....
Oh ok awesome! We do have an art community too. Also we have a peertube instance you can use to upload your creations, if they are videos. You’ll see the information about it pinned on our page.
We are hilariouschaos.com
Let me know any questions if you have them. We’re excited to have you !
For example, I used to follow a lot of subreddits for individual YouTube content creators, however, Lemmy doesn’t really have the size or culture to support this currently.
It’s not even that niche imo, but just more music production content in general. There was an instance focused on this a few months ago, but it seems to have gone and not returned.
On Reddit, you have communities of music makers around theory, various genres, various software, synths, and deals. It’s definitely a source of inspiration I miss.
I’m pretty sure the hololive community is active here.
It’s also a pretty self fulfilling prophecy but I get what you’re saying. Hopefully the new scaling sort gets more popular as instances upgrade to 0.19. I’ve seen so many more smaller communities since I’ve started browsing by that.
Even league of legends, a huge game worldwide, barely has a community here.
Is it always weird on new instances, I’m seeing posts from a random amount of days ago, no votes and no comments. Also, is it possible to federate with communities automatically or do I have to search for them all one at a time to add them to my instance?
It wasn’t but now it does I guess. I just searched a community didn’t existed locally on my instance and I got same result as you. No votes, no comments. I think this is enough to open an issue in the Lemmy repo.
I wanted to start a community, including a matrix server for chatting, but public signups cause some “undesirables” to sign up and when I finally figured out what rooms they joined and what they were posting (unencrypted) I had to nope out of the whole project over night. They seem to scan the federated network for public instances with open registrations and then do shit like this. It’s a shame but the only community effort I could see myself doing in the future would need to be friend-to-friend networks or invite only or something like that…
Hi, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these so this will be changes between 150 and 171. I’ve been focused on resolving image and performance issues mainly in this time but I also added a couple new things too. Youtube links now open in-app (configurable in settings), there’s an option to remove special characters...

It’s for the best anyway. It’s better for the health of the fediverse when communities are spread out across a wide array of instances. The consolidation of communities on lemmy.world is not ideal. Good luck with the community!
The package manager is usually tied to the distro, but the point above is to let the package manager inform your distro choice.
You’ll notice a running theme in my lecture here is “choice.” You can switch Desktop Environment and other stuff on just about any distro and make it feel like yours. Switching package managers isn’t recommended though! 😅
So for instance, Arch (btw lol), or Manjaro, or Endeavour use Pacman.
I’ve switched to Endeavour recently which is essentially “User-friendly Arch-based” with an installer and stuff, and it’s absolutely lovely for games. My old 960M laptop runs plenty of stuff great. :D
On my main rig I’ve used OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for years, which is also a rolling release (constantly updated) distro that technically uses RPMs, but uses its own package manager called Zypper, which I find mostly user friendly. Packages are also a bit more thoroughly tested.
Both use KDE Plasma desktop environment and it’s gorgeous.
Alternatively, especially for laptops with hybrid Nvidia graphics, POP!_OS is alright if you’re okay with GNOME desktop environment. (You can always change, but it’s geared toward GNOME). It used Aptitude, and the updates trail behind a bit, but generally that’s supposed to make a more stable system.
(Note that when I say “lags behind”, latest security fixes tend to be backported, but you won’t see fancy new shiny features as fast.)
For gaming specifically though:
Win10 is gonna be my last Windows. 11 is invasive and opinionated, and 12 is gonna have a forced Ai fetish. Gross.
Good news: Steam games work wonderfully. Thanks to advances with Proton and all their support for the SteamDeck (which runs Linux btw!)
For other platforms, look into Heroic Launcher, which takes a lot of the headache out of managing stuff like GOG games. :)
With rolling releases you usually want to update cautiously and check news updates and stuff, because newer versions aren’t as thoroughly tested and some stuff might break…but you get new features faster so that’s fun.
That being said: If you’re willing to learn a little as you go, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is a big win in my book for getting the latest fun stuff while still being stable! It’s also thoroughly security-minded.
And by default, it includes “Snapper” set up for you, so you can just roll the system back to a working version in the rare case something goes wrong. You can install snapper on any distro, but it comes pre-configured and ready to go, as long as you use the default “BTRFS” file system.
I won’t get into filesystems because hoo boi…but TL;DR: BTRFS allows “snapshots” and rollbacks that don’t require literally doubling your disk space for rolling back, so it’s a great safety net.
That being said: ALWAYS have more than one backup, in multiple locations, of anything you find important!
Good luck and have fun. I will say, Endeavour, OpenSUSE, and Pop_OS all have great communities that are eager to help if you’re eager to learn! :)

The admin of Blahaj is openly interested in exposing trans people’s alt accounts and outing them on their mains. And somehow it’s the biggest trans instance. We need a community and admin reaction in favour of defederating people who do that.
Please understand: I mean this in a very, very loving way. Lemmy has so much content and so many references that I do not understand but it’s awesome seeing all these passionate communities outside of my usual circles.
With startrek.website we’d hoped creating a Star Trek themed instance might encourage other ex-moderators to start topic-specific instances too, and it would kick off a flourishing of myriad communities run by devoted moderators, a Lemmyverse so diverse and inspiring that not even Reddit could further justify it’s own existence in the presence of such an obviously superior system.
Instead it turned out “Star Trek and Linux” was enough to satisfy nearly everyone’s tastes (both subtle and gross).

Yeah I tried a WSB themed instance. Lemmy really isn’t set up to support this. Its a pretty critical issue with how its engineered and can’t really be fixed in the current structure.

Managed to set up an instance using Lemmy-Easy-Deploy but federation is being a bit weird
