Hey, that’s not fair to drug dealers. I’ve heard many kind stories about dealers helping people. If something happens to their customers then they can’t buy anymore. If something happens to Reddit mods, they just replace them.

Everything it does other games do better.

Space travel and exploration (space and ground, seemlessly), as well as space combat? Elite: Dangerous.

Story? Literally anything.

Combat? Damn near any shooter made in the last 20 years.

Dungeon looting? Just play Fallout 4, which has plenty of issues but none as bad as Starfield.

It’s not bad. It’s just not good at anything. I have no reason to play it over so many other games. It feels like it doesn’t know what it’s supposed to be, so it doesn’t do anything well or interesting.

Then it isn’t good enough yet. People will use public transport when it’s better or cheaper than a car. Dedicated bus lanes to bypass car traffic should be in place, to encourage using busses that create less traffic. Trains should be reliable, frequent, and cheap for longer distance travel. This stuff is all do-able with just a small amount of effort, and has been done and successful in other places, but it requires governments to stuff huffing gasoline.

I grew up watching SW and the prequels came out when I was young. I enjoyed them as a stupid kid and then hated them as I grew up though. I recently rewarched them and they aren’t nearly as bad as I remember, with the exception of Jar Jar who I always forget just how horrible he is whenever he’s on screen. I think it could just be how bad the rest of SW is now (with the exception of Andor, which is I think my favorite piece of SW media in totality) that helps me enjoy them more. I’ve seen how bad things can be so I appreciate that the prequels didn’t get that bad.

The problem is if you aren’t exploitative then you aren’t being as “efficient” (in a capitalist sense) so you’ll be out-competed. The system is designed to incentivize exploitation. It’s mis-aligned to do anything else.

It depends on what you mean. For me, it’s pretty user friendly, but I’m also fairly comfortable using a terminal and am very technologically literate. The fact it handles tedious tasks automatically (or can be made to trivially) is so much nicer than Windows. You can easily update all applications and your system in a matter of seconds. Compared to Windows where the application itself has to check for updates when it launches, sends you to download the installer, you have to run that and close the previous version, relaunch, and then you’re finally updated for that single application. Let’s not talk about system updates. Linux is more friendly. It requires a certain level of competence that Windows doesn’t, but if you’re above that level it’s generally better.

Sure, things can go wrong with DEs and other stuff, but it’s often easier than when things go wrong in Windows. Have you ever had the desktop or Explorer crash in Windows? It’s a bad time. Windows is not user friendly. People are just used to it.

They both do things that are more user-friendly than the other. The fact you think it isn’t user-friendly is really showing who doesn’t understand the term. I listed a few things Linux handles better than Windows, and there are many more. Windows fails at many steps, but people accept they understand Windows and deal with it. Windows also doesn’t have any options for customization, so it’s the same bad for everyone, which does help people solve issues, though they maybe shouldn’t have had them in the first place.

True, but in Linux is pretty trivial to change the ownership (or just use “sudo” if that’s sufficient. Windows it takes longer to do these things.

Imagine thinking eating spoiled milk from a cow isn’t weird, but the mold part is. There are quite a few cases where mold is good. It’s not like blue cheese is the exception.

A not insignificant number of guests are usually dressed like regular modern day people. Ren faires are for everyone, and most people don’t own period costumes. It’s usually encouraged for guests to dress up, but it absolutely is not required.

It sounds like it’s basically the same. My understanding is this type of thing actually started in the US and was exported to Europe, ironically enough. But yeah, many (most) guests are not in costume. I don’t see how some guests in Trek costumes would harm anything.

Although it’s not very honorable for developers to intentially create a worse product for people who pay, just to try to prevent a small number of pirated copies to work (which likely won’t actually prevent anything).

I meant it more as the company. I’m fully aware the individuals don’t have any say. It’s still often an internal decision though, but made by the suits, not the people actually creating the thing.

I don’t disagree, but also it isn’t relevant. Either it’s wrong or it’s not, regardless of gender. People should be happy first.

I doubt it. It’s the halting problem. There are perfectly legitimate uses for similar things that you can’t detect if it’ll halt or not prior to running it. Maybe they’d patch it to avoid this specific string, but you’d just have to make something that looks like it could do something but never halts.

If you buy a Lamborghini and they have the ability to later decide you don’t actually own it and take it away, that’s the equivalent. I don’t know why you brought up renting. Renting was never mentioned.

We all know how it works. The problem is that’s the only way it works. With a car you can choose to rent. With modern things you “purchase” it, and it only works as long as they want. You do have some alternatives for some media, but for games that’s it. Even if you purchase a disk, the game only functions as long as they allow it.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

I tried Commandos (released in 1998) the other day. It worked nearly flawlessly. I still needed to set my bottle (application for running wine/proton with presets) to run in an older version of Windows compatibility mode I think, but you need to do that in Windows probably too.

(You do need a fan patch to make it run at modern resolutions, but that’s not required, and it’s needed for windows too.)

I did the same thing as you until a few months ago. I had used Linux many years ago, but never fully switched, so I wasn’t too worried. Windows has been frustrating me for years now, and one day the search bar showed back up even though I’ve told it many times to not have it. At that point I decided I was done using an operating system that didn’t listen to me and I switched over. It’s been an amazing experience. There’s only one game that hasn’t worked for me so far. I don’t remember the name, but it was a beta for a BR style game, and it was only because the anti-cheat hadn’t been updated to accept Linux, not because it didn’t run.
