Looks like r/programming discovered the astroturfing, so in true Reddit fashion they simply shut down the subreddit entirely to avoid the spread of negative public sentiment. Thanks for galvanizing my resolve to migrate to the fediverse, Spez

The perfect site for reddit admins would be endless bots posting, commenting and viewing adds while said advertisers are oblivious to the con.

The first two have been going on at some level for years. The last? Well, it will be interesting to see the official reddit app's adoption numbers in the coming months.

Hello i hope you dont mind if i post that post, in case someone does not want to go onto reddit:

r/Save3rdPartyApps
u/attackofmilk

Subreddits are starting to see spam from anti-protest, pro-admin ChatGPT bots
Thread on /r/Pics discussing bot spam. (Pics is now NSFW, but this thread is only profanity / vulgarity.)
/r/pics/comments/14puynz/chatgpt_bots_are_spamming_proadmin_astroturf/

/r/Programming closed (by admins?) after community recognition of bot spam:

Ycombinator thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36361247

Top-voted post from /r/Programming before it closed: https://web.archive.org/web/20230611210834/https://old.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/146wn9s/meta_who_is_astroturfing_rprogramming_and_why/

(I would have just crossposted the top thread directly, but this sub forbids crossposting NSFW posts (which is now everything on /r/Pics )

The thing is that it really is no longer about 3rd party apps working or not, rather, the level of disrespect displayed from Reddit towards us, their userbase. That's why I'm not going back.

Wolf_359,

Popular club sucked too.

I got added to it for a top post once. I opened the popular subreddit and the top post was something like, “Well, I’m here. Now what?”

I knew immediately it was dumb.

I think “secret” communities can be good when they’re for a specialized interest. But they don’t even have to be secret. Even just niche is great.

For example, the discord for the game PolyBridge is fucking incredible. I mean, it kind of sucks right now because they just released PolyBridge 3, so a lot of new people have (temporarily) joined.

But there are regulars who post hourly years after PolyBridge releases. There is even this one person called Arglin who posts absurdly complex essays on geometry and new discoveries within the game. They could be dissertations on mathematics.

If anyone is still reading this, I have to tell you about the Linkage Repository. This document is insane. For an Indie studio’s bridge building game lol.

cassetti,

In my experience, most people outgrow the secret clubs phase eventually. But I’m sure not everyone does. Who doesn’t like feeling special, no matter how unjustified it is?

** looks around at the Free Masons, Skull and Bones, and Illuminati **

Elkaki123,

I agree but with slight differences, I don’t think it’s only about power but more on the first thing, they have built communities for over a decade, to just leave is extremely difficult when you have poured this much work and time into the thing, it might be like an abusive relationship but they still love the places they’ve built.

That being said, some of mods have left big subs, but it’s kind of difficult to get everyone on board.

Lastly I do think this is impactful, it literally strips one of the most “prestigious” and well recognized sub of all the functions that made it special, only doing the bare minimum to keep it alive

To some degree it's hard to be sympathetic, because the people complaining about this are seriously lacking in sympathy themselves. They just wanted to see the content that those users produced for them, they didn't care about the difficulties or preferences of the users themselves. So when those Spez-opposed users took their ball and went home the Spez-friendly people got angry at them for taking their comments away with them rather than at Spez for having driven them to that in the first place.

Sarsaparilla,
@Sarsaparilla@kbin.social avatar

Exactly. My sympathies are with those creators & moderators who have received awful comments from reddit users that are too naive and impatient to understand the protest actions.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

If we build it, they will come.

ColonelSanders,

I posted a similar comment elsewhere but along the same line of thought: The sad thing is that the masses that are still on Reddit at this point dgaf and will likely stay on Reddit forever. There's a real problem of Apathy in today's culture when people are just jonesing for their fix of daily content/memes, or at the very least nothing that disrupts the status quo. They don't give a fuck about "ideals" or what corporations do or farm from them so long as their instant gratification and daily intake of said content remains unchanged.

OpenStars,
@OpenStars@kbin.social avatar

They seem to assume that new mommies & daddies mods & content creators will rise up to take their place. Like all that effort grows on trees or something.

eliz,

📢Entire mod team on r/mildlyinteresting (and more subs) removed and locked out of their accounts after changing their rules upon community's request. (They're also switching subs BACK to SFW) (kbin.social)

EDIT: GO DM MODS OF YOUR FAVORITE SUBREDDITS AND POLITELY ASK ABOUT MIGRATION!: something as simple as "Hey, I love this community but I no longer use reddit, will you guys be making a community on Kbin or other alternatives? Let me know please, thanks." will work!! We need more voices encouraging migration!...

JollyTheRancher,

Another subreddit posted the date he said it, which I think added to it - He said it on April 19th of this year - https://www.gq.com/story/steve-huffman-reddit-public-tiktok-ban - that aged poorly very very quickly

If this is how the admins choose to act, so fucking be it. I'll deltree my 12 year old account and never go back. As it stands, the fediverse is already my new home, and the users who decide to remain on reddit can explain to all the new users what the fuck went wrong.
