scytale,

Can you provide more info how it’s easy to accidentally wipe? I’ve only done a transfer once, but it was by installing authenticator on the new phone and logging in, then deleting the other one on the old phone after testing that the codes work.

scytale,

Make a full night’s sleep like 4 hours or something. As long as our corporate overlords don’t take advantage and make it a 12 hour workday.

scytale,

Yeah that was the incredible part. Kudos to the crew for being able to get everyone out safely.

Insight on how the ADs network is built?

Does any of you know firsthand how the ad industry works? I hate them with all my heart and I already go out of my way to block them but maybe you have been on the other side of the fence and can share some internal insight on what to focus on to really disrupt the data collection. I.e. even if I use uBlock can the ad network...

scytale,

I think there are levels to it. Adblockers, while still not being used by the majority of people, has a pretty significant chunk of users and is becoming more common to regular people, not just privacy-concerned users. So I think DNS level blocking is fine. You start to stand out when you add more privacy and anonymity tools on top of it, like Decentralyes, for example.

scytale,

I just saw a post with an article saying indie filmmakers already scrambling to make a horror movie like the Pooh one.

scytale,

Batfleck definitely has the look and is more comic “accurate”. I’m sure he would’ve killed it in a better film and not directed by Snyder.

scytale,

That’s why I always take the entire week between christmas and new year off.

scytale,

I just changed my hairstyle yesterday, can confirm.

scytale,

Not counting climbing a mountain with ice (and no snow falling), my actual first snowfall was in the 2021 snowpocalypse in Texas of all places. So it wasn’t actually a great time. We were fortunate enough not to lose power and water though, so other people definitely had it way worse than us.

scytale,

It doesn’t have to be black and white. As many comments have already mentioned, it all depends on your threat model. Sure, it’s literally impossible to be completely private or anonymous unless you never go online and live like a hermit, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to minimize what personal information companies get from you. You can still care about your private data while at the same time not sacrificing convenience.

Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

scytale,

And here’s what I saw on a comment from another post about this. From arstechnica:

The company added that it does not “listen to any conversations or have access to anything beyond a third-party aggregated, anonymized and fully encrypted data set that can be used for ad placement” and “regret[s] any confusion.”

I knew it was bullshit.

scytale,

Sometime in the late 2000s. Bought a used netbook from someone and didn’t know it had ubuntu on it.

scytale,

That’s how I explain it as well. It’s better than the email analogy I see all the time. Obviously using reddit as an example only works if the person you’re talking to knows what reddit is. Otherwise, I just change it to something they know (i.e. facebook, discord, etc.)

scytale,

I have a “friend” on facebook who completely idolizes Harvey. Like posts quotes and often with a picture of the character.

scytale, (edited )

Top. Doesn’t really matter most of the time though because I always set them to auto hide.

scytale,

Maybe. What makes the thing scary is how unstoppable and inevitable of a force it is, no matter what you do and no matter where you go. I’ll be disappointed if they somehow find a way to kill it in the sequel.

scytale,

In some countries where facebook found a way to become “free” even without a data plan, facebook is literally the internet for a lot of people who can’t afford it. And that makes it even more dangerous.

scytale,

Unfortunately it depends on the individual, so no one can really answer your question but yourself. For me, I draw the line when it personally becomes burdensome to maintain something. For example, I use Bitwarden to manage all my passwords, but I don’t trust myself enough to host and maintain a server and keep it online/secure, so I use their hosted service. I use google drive to store some miscellaneous stuff because of the free 15GB storage, but I don’t store any private files (personal photos, documents, etc.). I use ProtonDrive for more important stuff, and for very confidential files, I encrypt them first. I use google maps for navigation because of reliability and accuracy, but I use a separate google account for it. I know that doesn’t do much, but it keeps some level of separation for me personally. I still maintain a facebook account (although I barely use it) because of family, but I still use a facebook container on firefox and don’t use the mobile app. That plus all the privacy extensions.

The main thing is that it doesn’t have to be black or white. You don’t have to go full hermit, and at the same time you don’t need to fully embed yourself into the google ecosystem. Just do what you can and what you are comfortable with. As they say, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

scytale,

Dammit, my UI glitched out. Thanks for pointing it out.

scytale,

So the rumor is the owner is related to one of the big apartment companies, that’s why the service is being pushed hard to a lot of apartment complexes in my city.

Also, People=Shit by Slipknot. lmao

What are some easy ways that you can improve energy efficiency and be more eco-friendly in your rental apartment?

For starters, you can add weather stripping to outside-facing doors and windows. If your landlord doesn’t want to pay for it, then it can be found cheaply on aliexpress. Also, add insulation outside-facing switch covers and outlet plates.

Use fans in the summer. You can keep your thermostat at 77-78 during the day and still feel comfy. The issue of why you feel hot is not because 77 is hot, it’s because air is not moving. Having a fan on keeps the air circulating in your apartment, making it more comfortable without using too much energy; instead of relying on your AC to move air around by lowering the thermostat so it keeps turning on.

Blackout shades also work to cool down your apartment, not just keep light out. Put them on windows facing west to keep sunlight out during the hottest time of the day.

scytale,

When people who didn’t like rock/metal bought an Extreme album because they thought all the songs were like More Than Words.

scytale,

Well if they didn’t make it so itchy, maybe I wouldn’t have scratched it off. /s
