scytale,

Work to get myself relocated a couple of years earlier. I eventually did, but I think I could’ve done it at least 2 years earlier.

scytale,

They can go for LMDE to avoid the Ubuntu stuff.

scytale,

Cut down on my sugar intake. I love sweets so much that my teeth are ruined because of it. I’m currently going through some extensive dental work to fix what I have left. I’ll start reducing my sugar intake (mostly desserts and sweet snacks) and maybe switch to fruits for any sweet cravings.

scytale,

This is why I try to endure the fever side effects of vaccines as much as I can without taking a tylenol, so my immune system gets some proper “training” to recognize and fight the real thing.

scytale,

Probably want more aid. Don’t they (Kim and his government) usually start throwing a tantrum when they want some attention and aid?

Can anyone share their experience with Asahi as a Daily Driver?

hi, I’ve been pretty happy with macOS recently on my m1 MacBook, really only because I’ve been paying for software from awesome devs who make great apps (plenty are open source, so most I use are not paid) and I’ve found my productivity increase like a lot....

scytale,

I was gonna say the same. It’s going for the nuclear option for a relatively small problem (unsigned apps warning). Why run something that emulates an OS when you already have the legit one that’s proven to work well with your productivity. Also, the best OS that runs on mac hardware is macOS. It’s definitely worth trying on a non-apple computer for sure.

My bank has some neat online banking features that break down where my money comes from and where I spend it on. It also compares my current expenses to my monthly average so I can see if I’m spending more. I’m sure I can do better by doing it on my own, but for someone lazy like me, it’s a good starting point to get an overview of my finances.

Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

scytale,

Yeah it sounds sus. Apple themselves published an explanation of how siri doesn’t actively listen to you all the time, so I’m not sure how they can bypass that.

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

scytale,

IMO, The Last Jedi is an ok movie in a vaccum. The problem is it’s supposed to be part of a trilogy and it barely advances the plot and character development. As a stand alone film though? It’s alright.

[QUESTION] Do you have any favorite quick broth recipes for homemade instant ramen?

I picked up a bunch of unflavored instant ramen packets with the intention of making my own. I’m a big fan of Korean Ramyun packs and make them often, but they are getting pricy nowadays. Does anyone else in c/cooking do this as well? What are your favorite quick broth recipes?

scytale,

Yeah, dashi is basically my cheat code. lol. When trying various mixes of soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, onions, etc., adding dashi just automatically makes it taste complete.

Another thing we “discovered” was using the *don (i.e. oyakodon, gyudon, etc.) sauce recipe to make a thick broth for tsukemen (dipping noodles), and it works! We just add a little more water than usual so it’s more like thick soup in consistency rather than sauce. And the recipe being soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar/honey.

scytale,

I don’t have an exact recipe, but my wife likes to add Perilla or Sesame oil to ramyun broth. We want to try truffle oil but we can’t find it in any of the asian groceries in our area. Oh and dashi and/or miso are definitely what I would use if I made broth from scratch.

scytale,

Oh I didn’t know it’s already out. I think I only saw one teaser in the last few months. Love me some Yorgos. I’ll watch this asap and update this comment with my review.

scytale,

This also works with noodles if you don’t want to eat rice. Just add thick wheat or egg noodles and mix it in until it’s cooked in the sauce.

scytale,

After seeing how scary and powerful he is in Minus One, I don’t think any type of fantastical depiction of Godzilla will ever top it. I’m sure it’s still gonna be a fun movie to watch though. Who doesn’t like to see giant monsters fight.

What is the deal with Palestine and Hamas?

For mental health reasons, I had taken myself out of most political topics. But lately there seems to be a surge of talk about Palestine and Hamas (forgive me if I spelled this wrong). I do know it’s something to do with land rights, but it also seems to be so much more at the same time. I’m not trying to start any fights. I...

Sorry but you make it sound like it’s easy to just get up and leave. If that was the case, all the people I know back in my 3rd world home country would’ve left already. Just because there are communities around the world, it doesn’t mean it’s easy to get there, especially with how strict immigration is nowadays. Not to mention these are people coming from the middle east, in a region where countries are wary of accepting people from.

What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

I hate that I always compare Lemmy to Reddit, but Reddit used to have (not sure if they still do) guidelines called “Reddiquette” that included guidelines about upvoting and downvoting. I don’t remember the specifics (and sending too much of my browser traffic to Reddit makes me feel dirty) but one of the guidelines was...

scytale,

For the dipping sauce, add soy sauce to the chili garlic oil, and squeeze a tiny amount of lemon juice.

scytale,

I do this as well, especially in the office, where it happens all the time, not just during cold months. Every time I touch a door knob or elevator button, I get shocked. So I kinda slap it first with the back of my hand before I touch anything metal.

scytale,

I personally don’t agree with it. I already use Signal and I don’t like that it requires a phone number.

Which sequels/prequels/spinoffs made the originals somehow worse?

The Matrix is an often used example, but for me it’s the Alien Prequels - especially Alien: Covenant really makes the Original Alien much worse. When the original was released in 1979 it had the perfect Monster. A dangerous killing machine of unknown origin. The missing background of the alien is a big part of its scary mess....

scytale,

Some people would say Blade Runner 2049. I wouldn’t say the original is worse, it’s a certified classic. But the sequel really surpassed expectations and a lot fans consider it even better than the original.

scytale,

There was a time during covid where there was a monkey war in Thailand because they weren’t getting any food from tourists due to the lockdown.

scytale,

Yep. Servers in the US already have miserable work lives, and having to put on a smile and fake niceness because your take home pay depends on how much you get in tips is just terrible.
