Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I’ve been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I’m looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will...

slazer2au,

Pinhole is still a thing. If you want other options there is also adguard.

slazer2au,

Find some groups on meetup.com and attend some. It isn’t that hard it just takes time. Don’t expect to go to 3 or 4 and become friends, depending on the size of the group you may only make friends with one sub group of the main group.

slazer2au,

I would much rather the visual pollution of a windmill than the combined pollutions of fossil fuel based power plants.

There are 2 windmills not far from my place and they are a good point of reference for where you are.

slazer2au,

We have a retroactive Google Sheet which pulled from Reddit years ago where we put our transactions in and categorise them. Lets us see where we spent money

slazer2au,

It’s not about matching, it’s about preventing Adobe from getting money. :P

Not to toot my own horn

But you’re welcome !taskmaster hope someone took over the mantle while I was away.

What's the name of the belief that gods/entities are quasi-semtient memes (the linguistic term, not the cultural term) in the same manner that corporations and governments are considered people?

It’s a personal philosophy that I’ve come to use as my own form of religion, and while I’m aware other people have researched the idea, I’m having some trouble finding the name for the concept.

slazer2au,

There isn’t?

that corporations and governments are considered people?"

Also, they aren’t. That was a news media taking what a judge said and misinterpreting it.

slazer2au,

The game is like that for the first game month. When you get to summer you tend to relax a bit more so after your tool upgrades.

slazer2au,

You can get a raspberry pi 4 or greater to run Lemmy and use this site to calculate the power cost

picockpit.com/…/how-much-does-power-usage-cost-fo…

If I ran one at home power would be €8 a year to run the pi 24/7 with a fan. Then however much you pay a year for a domain.

!selfhosted will have a tonne more resources for hosting your instance plus how to secure it.

slazer2au,

They’re legally required to prioritize shareholder interests above literally everything else.

I wouldn’t say legally required. It is in the best interest of the C suite to appease the shareholders because shareholders are the ones that say how much they get paid or if they even have a job there.

slazer2au,

And 7Zip is also Russian.

slazer2au,

The addresses are here under plain DNS

adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

Something to keep in mind is that some ISP will intercept your DNS request and redirect them their own servers. DNS is done in clear text. If you are concerned about that you can use DNS over TLS or DNS over HTTPS to hide your queries. But that is a complex set up and not all devices/apps support DoT or DoH

slazer2au,

no it still gets detected because it is using Ublock Origin to hide the ads.

Which YouTuber's voice can lull you to sleep?

I’ve exhausted things I can sleep to on Netflix, and it’s literally impossible to sleep to things on Prime (so I barely watch anything there; it’s not worth falling asleep to something I like, since I might be punished for it), so I’ve started putting on YouTube in the evenings since it won’t wake me with silence at...

slazer2au,

I like how recently he knows we do this and will shout us out. Too bad we are asleep and don’t hear it.

slazer2au,

Any song that ends with a guitar smash solo.

slazer2au,

With enough time it will.

slazer2au,

In most cases, the add-on just blocks or hides cookie related pop-ups. When it’s needed for the website to work properly, it will automatically accept the cookie policy for you (sometimes it will accept all and sometimes only necessary cookie categories, depending on what’s easier to do). It doesn’t delete cookies.

Not to keen on it accepting the cookies on my behalf, the point is to not accept the cookie. Consent-o-matic will actively deny the requests.

slazer2au,

From a technical POV, I don’t see how this would work without some kind of rendezvous service or connection broker to get past the NAT and CGNAT issues that plauge mobile services.
