Social status and exclusivity plays into it in practice, for sure, in a right-out fetishistic sense: Like there’s chefs who have onions chopped so fine, using a special technique (not the usual chef technique you see) that they melt in the sauce, very labour-intensive. Now, having the onions melt into the sauce is a nice and valid thing, however, why in the everloving fuck aren’t you using a blender. Even *if* there’s a difference, which all my experience tells me there isn’t, it’s going to have such a minimal return on investment it’s utterly pointless but as an exercise in exclusivity.\n

Nah. [Confit byaldi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confit_byaldi) is ludicrously haute-cuisine, needs three-star levels of manual prep work. The tag line is “Not everyone can be a great cook – but a great cook can come from anywhere”. Good food isn’t special in the sense that everyone so inclined, with enough obsession, can learn to combine aroma, to cook things to point, all that stuff, which is how excellent home cooks are made. The human body can’t turn dietary fluoride into harder enamel, it has to stay on the teeth, topically, for a while to soak in. As such drinking water is a suboptimal way of going about applying it to teeth. Fluoride in toothpaste is highly effective. Dentists applying highly-concentrated fluoride stuff directly to your teeth even more. In people who actually get their teeth made resilient by such measures fluoridated drinking water has exactly zero impact as the teeth can’t get more resilient, in people who don’t, well, it’s something, a little step. There’s a reason Europe isn’t fluoridating drinking water: We don’t have huge segments of the population falling through the gaps of the health system.\n
\n
> is cheap AF, and is completely trivial to distribute.\n
\n
And if you were Brasil or India that would make sense. The US, OTOH, does not have an excuse when it comes to stingy with more effective measures: You have the resources to do better.

Deflated, maybe, yes, but that’s par for the course when bragging. Which is what OP’s post talks about. If you go all “dear, dear” on people doing that they’ll definitely be offended."

[That’s not on a main road](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Grundschule+Niederstotzingen/@48.5416064,10.2369723,16.33z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x479946d4d21d8af1:0x28d0eb80cb17df7f!8m2!3d48.54188!4d10.23954!16s%2Fg%2F1tgfvlcm?entry=ttu). Zoom out a bit, the main roads are the ones leading to other villages, named after those villages (or in the case of Ulm a city in that direction).\n
\n
> Grundschule Pfaffenhofen\n
\n
[neither](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Grundschule+Pfaffenhofen/@49.0620402,8.9749824,16.67z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x410b8f8ce5cb2efb:0x31c87e2000d06919!8m2!3d49.06201!4d8.97686!16s%2Fg%2F1tdqmls_?entry=ttu)\n
\n
Didn’t check the rest\n
\n
> Just like US schools, many have their own driveway that goes off the main road\n
\n
Those are residential roads. [This a view of the Niederstotzingen school from the road it’s on](https://www.google.com/maps/@48.542406,10.2389314,3a,60y,119.92h,81.99t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sW-TbbzDmkVz_-XMnR0tqYg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu), the gymnasium is on the other side. Look up and down the road, there’s residential buildings there. Looking at the signage (or rather lack thereof), it’s two-way. No lane markings though small roads just don’t have them, you slow down and make sure to not shear off your side mirrors with the side mirrors of oncoming traffic. The little shack with a sign with an H is a bus stop. Only seems to be served by one bus line (at least I can’t find more), [here’s the schelude](https://www.ding.eu/fileadmin/content/downloads/ics/20230421-DING-EVG-Streik-RAB-Bus/593-Streik-RAB-Fahrten.pdf). It connects to two train stations (including thie Niederstotzingen one) roughly every 30 minutes. Frankly speaking you can walk from there you’ll be faster than waiting for the next bus.\n
\n
Niederstotzingen is classed as a city btw, almost 5k inhabitants. It’s not really a size thing in Germany though and nowadays the title doesn’t have any legal meaning, city rights were granted by Kaiser Sigismund in 1430, meaning it served as the local trade hub or such. Congratulations, thanks to wikipedia I know now more about a tiny city I don’t care about in a state I don’t care for :)

Thinking “fixing this requires a socialist revolution” honestly is part of the problem: Organise to fix the issue, there, workers will see that issues can be fixed, fix more that comes up, and they’ll both be emboldened and educated about their strength. Foreplay before sex.

US suburbia has a higher density than the German countryside, having to travel 24km is nuts. That’d be defensible if you live in a tiny settlement 24km from a place with more than two dozen houses – I’m sure those exist in the US but suburbia isn’t that.\n
\n
How many pupils were there at your school? My state has 106240 pupils in 393 primary schools, that’s an average of 270. Minimum size under ordinary circumstances is 80, the smallest is on Nordstrandischmoor: An island, 18 inhabitants, five families, one school, one teacher, two students, [here it is](https://www.google.com/maps/@54.5518864,8.8108853,16z?entry=ttu). That’s because we don’t do boarding in primary education so there’s a maximum tolerable commute time/distance, once those kids are old enough they’ll spend Monday through Friday on the mainland.\n
\n
If your system insists that a school have at least 2k students or such then, yes, of course, walking to school will be an impossibility for most. Fix your school sizes and like 99% of students will be able to walk or bike, use buses or minivans or whatnot for the rest we do that too (not really possible in Nordstrandischmoor, thing doesn’t even have a ferry but a rail link that’s only usable when the tide is low).\n
\n
And no it wasn’t my school it was my Kindergarten, which wasn’t, by a long shot, the closest to home it was the one my parents chose. I mentioned it to say that biking 3.5km is something a 4yold can do, physically, without any issue at all really.
