That’s an unfinished nature bridge.

Quexotic,

My first thought as well.

ohlaph,

Also my first thought.

rip_art_bell,
@rip_art_bell@lemmy.world avatar

It was my first thought too

TheGreenGolem,

Actually it was my second.

Naaah, it was the first.

Octavio,

Honestly my first thought was snow shed but when I saw the nature bridge comments I was like oh derp yah that’s it. The slope isn’t steep enough to warrant a snow shed.

uranibaba,

We are not talking about naturebridge.eu/pages/about-us, are we?

Geth,

Quite a common feature in Europe. Gives the animals safe passage over busy roads.

Syndic,

More or less safe. Predators often camp these choke points for obvious reasons.

jojowakaki, (edited )

I read pedesterians often camp these choke points. I was picturing hobo joe sitting there to catch a passing rabbit or deer for a good meal.

..narrated by David Attenborough.

GoodEye8,

Fucking scrubs, can’t hunt without getting an unfair advantage.

Mango,

I’ve heard that makes the spot real popular with sparkly vampires.

Rubanski,

Fucking campers…

dynamojoe,
Fedizen,

not just that but it saves human lives as well by reducing animal collisions.

Moneo, (edited )

And the true motive bubbles to the surface. Drivers must be prioritized at all costs.

Edit: damn y’all really salty, ask yourself what the chances are they would have built this if only wildlife benefitted and maybe you’ll see my point

MJBrune,

Pretty silly to think “Oh that’s the human’s true motive, self-preservation! I got you now, you sly humans!”

Moneo,

My point is everyone is talking about how great this is for wildlife but there’s no way they would build this if only the wildlife were benefitting from it.

Sidhean,

??

lazylion_ca,

If thats all it was, they would just build fences instead of bridges.

orrk,

ya, I think that human life is more important than animal life

Killer,

You must be fun at parties.

Moneo,

Loool gottem

weew, (edited )

You think people built entire highways just because they wanted the most inefficient and expensive way to screw over some deer? No fucking shit all this infrastructure is for driving.

Moneo,

No I thought they built highways because they wanted the most inefficient and expensive way to get around.

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

Common in New Jersey too. Were essentially Europe of America.

echodot,

Wouldn’t that be California?

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

You mean the New Jersey of the West Coast?

StorminNorman,

I really hope you’re making a joke cos of this one very limited example. Cos if not…

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, I thought it was obviously a joke, and you’re there with me. Right? I took the use of land bridges, nature bridges, animal bridges, whatever term is used, and used it to compare the State of New Jersey to a continent, neither of which are homogenous enough to be able to even make a comparison.

I’m just curious why you really hope it’s a joke though. I suppose I have the ire of some Europeans in drawing such a conclusion, and I’m genuinely curious why that’s the case.

I guess the best place to start would be what’s European?

StorminNorman,

The thing that made me question it is that Americans have a tendency of saying dumb stuff like you did, and mean it. Cos like you said, there is very little to properly compare them.

Kirca,

Well that explains the smell!

(I know very little about Europe or New Jersey)

Moneo,

Oh wow I didn’t know new jersey had rail and walkable streets

Snapz,

“Essentially” is doing SOOOO much work there (for anyone not from America).

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

Hey, we’re trying, just as hard as my “essentially” is.

GiddyGap,

Were essentially Europe of America.

Get back to me when you have mandatory vacation time, universal healthcare, universal college-level education, universal pre-k, family leave, modern public transportation, non-crumbling infrastructure, climate-friendly policies, etc, etc.

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

NJ offers free community college, they’re working on universal preschool but it varies district to district (my district is about to move it to thee years old), NJ Transit trains are built in Germany, so that’s something right? We are working on offshore wind farms but the Dutch company backed out (and to be fair the economy is a shit show and I get it and I won’t point fingers). NJ is pretty much as progressive as it gets in the US, which is why I referred to it, tongue in cheek, as the Europe of America.

Some of the US is trying, and the amount of unjustified shit reddit, and now Lemmy, throw indiscriminately at the US is foolish. To suggest Mississippi and Vermont are the same is just not true, but that’s the vibe I get when I scroll through “America Bad” after “America Bad” post.

There’s no reason for people to be up on their high horse when we’re all a decade away from collapse. Let’s be friends and joke with one another. Sometimes all you got is jokes.

Coquihalla highway has something like this to keep avalanches and rocks off the road.

It’s the only tunnel I’ve driven that has windows.

Great Bear Snow Shed maps.app.goo.gl/HJUSEtGB2Jg8FFTN7

Meuzzin,

This was my assumtion as well. Colorado (I.E. Red Mountain Pass) has such things for avalanches and rock slides.

AI_toothbrush,

Italy and austria have a lor of those because of the mountains.

I Are they are used to ski over the road, it enables the slope to go all the way to the city cente.

the other day i asked my coworkers that “doesn’t that bother you that some of your apps are always listening to you?” they said “i’m not saying anything illegal and when i see a product that i was talking about, it’s almost like a reminder, otherwise i would forget all abou it”.

i gave up.

They disrupt the nature a little less. Animals aren’t hit crossing the street because they can go over and other small benefits like that. They also look nice and tunnels are fun when your car sounds nice

drdalek,

Yep, I love a good nature bridge!

FOSS is great at back end, and is tremendously closer to the front end ease of private, polished software than it ever has been.

Some more push for front-end ease with reasonable support communities will push it more into the mainstream. It needs to be as easy as pressing “install” and then using it. For mass adoption, the majority of people don’t care to become technical experts.

PlatinumSf,

Imo backend FOSS needs a complete rethink with an easy way to manage one’s own digital stewardship. I’ve lost a ton of data to FOSS projects (masto, lemmy, etc) just because the random host I chose decided to close up shop. Not particularly the fault of the software vendor per sae, and while I do not wish to hassle with hosting my own entire instance I’d be happy paying for or hosting my own data.

can,

And all your friends already pressed it and for some reason your local police counts on it.

I know your service is free, open source, devoid of ads, and not trying to steal my data, but iTs NoT uSeR fRiEnDlY.

Because being user-friendly is way, way, way more important than things like privacy, not being bombarded by ads, and not supporting billionaires who use their money to influence the law to benefit themselves and harm us.

Humans are fucking lazy pieces of shit and that’s a major reason why the billionaire class keeps winning, because most of us are too lazy to learn something new or do something the hard way because “there’s already an easy way.”

Boo Boo Bear: “I do believe corporations rob us of our dignity and independence, and that these systems must be ripped down, burnt down, or leveled by any force necessary.”

sbv,

Because being user-friendly is way, way, way more important than things like privacy, not being bombarded by ads,

People gravitate to the technology that they can use.

I live in a small town. Every business and service has a Facebook group because it’s usable. A couple of stalwarts maintain web pages but they’re full of inaccurate information because they’re too hard to update. The Facebook groups, on the other hand, are constantly up-to-date, and the owners are quick to respond to any comment on them.

That’s before you get to network effects. Everyone in the town uses Facebook. So when kids ask for a messaging or social media account, they ask for a Facebook product so they can talk to their friends and family.

It’s incredibly shitty. Everyone in town would agree with your sentiment, but they bounce off competing products. The effort involved in hosting a service isn’t a higher perceived cost than the ads, privacy invasion, etc.

Could be for a skii-slope as well. There are similar structures in Are, Sweden for example.

Mr_Blott,

On ski mountains these are usually placed in an avalanche prone area to stop the snow blocking the road
