CAPSLOCKFTW, to linux in Why Are Arch Linux Users So TOXIC?

So I’m an Arch user since 2013 and I don’t think I’m toxic. I am not really offended by this post but a bit worried. Why this hate against Arch (users)? I use Arch, btw is a meme that may has some truth, but like every good meme it is exaggerated. Arch users may have some pride in tunning Arch but most of the time they’re (in my expierence) helpful and inclusive. The OS itself fits right to my expectations: community driven, pragmatic, highly customizable. And I think the community is doing a lot for the overall Linux community with the Arch Wiki and for the Arch-based family with the AUR.

Edit: I didn’t seek help in the Arch fotum myself but read some threads there. Haven’t encountered any bm there.

They're fine. Certainly not "Hi-Fi", but better than anything cheaper.

mack123, to BuyItForLife in Affordable and excellent Kitchen knife: the Victorinox Fibrox

I have a set of 6 virtorinox steak knives from the 90s, that turned into general purpose kitchen knifes. They are now finally starting to become blunt. The black platic handles are smooth from use. 30 years on, ithink the time is approaching for them to be replaced. And that is only because I cannot sharpen the serated blades.

wnose,

If you bring them to a professional sharpener, they can do it for you.

technologicalcaveman, to BuyItForLife in Even if You Don't Like Headphones, Get the Koss KPH40...@$40!

I have a decent headphone collection, and I'd say I'd rather get some decent IEMS rather than a pair of koss. I don't like the koss sound or design. For the price of these I got the kiwi ears cadenza which are some of my favorite IEMS for cheap listening and use. I have much more expensive IEMS but the cadenzas are great still.

Wat betekent 'YSK' (in de titel)?

Blubton,

You should know (je zou moeten weten)

Pepyn,

Ah, het is angelsaksische taalverpaupering! Hihi. Nu ik er over nadenk, er is volgens mij geen gebruikelijke Nederlandse afkorting voor ‘goed om te weten:’.

erik,

TKG, ter kennisgeving, lijkt me een goede ietwat formele optie.

Blubton,

Hexadecimalkink, to linux in Standardizing the Linux Desktop ...

There already are Linux standards, its just that there are lots of people developing their own distros. Asking people who are developing in their free time to contribute to a collective solution if they don’t want to is forcing them to do something they don’t want to do in their free time.

Linux will become big in countries that encourage their governments and companies not to use Windows, and eventually there will be a few major players for desktop beyond the big 3 for enterprise (Suse, Ubuntu, Redhat)

Astra Linux in Russia is becoming the mass adopted Linux, the longer the war goes, the more companies that won’t be able to renew Microsoft licenses, the more adoption of Linux will increase.

Deepin Linux (China UOS) gets about 500 posts on it’s forums in Chinese per day. That version of Linux will likely become the dominant desktop OS in China by ~2030 if the USA continues sanctions.

Linux Mint has incrementally been growing a user base and donations every month. 5 years ago they were getting 7,000 euros on average per month, today they get 12,000 euros on average per month.

I’m not worried about Linux Desktop anymore, it’s a permanently established common good even if the majors like Red Hat and Ubuntu fold. And just like Lemmy and Mastodon popped up, at some point in the future Microsoft will do something greedy with Windows and people will flock to a few distros and it’ll all be over then.

lost_usb_stick, to BuyItForLife in AeroPress - my coffee maker for the last 15 years

People are asking what the difference between an Aero Press and French Press. The benefit to an aero press is the paper filters. They filter out some of the oils when making a cup. French press you get the oils or whatever you want to call it. I have tried several coffee makers over the years, gadgets like the vacuum coffee maker from bodium etc, and nothing comes close to the simplistic aero press for a decent cup of coffee.

Showroom7561,

Do the permanent stainless steel filters work as well as paper filters?

garrettw87,
@garrettw87@kbin.social avatar

Depends what you mean. I've used one before, and it worked well, but with mesh filters you will always get the oils coming through that paper removes. Some people like it that way, others don't. James Hoffman prefers paper filters; when I heard him say that and why, I gave them another try and decided he was right. They do give a "cleaner" quality to the taste.

rubicon,

Not to mention you get fine particulate with a French press compared to aeropress. There are better ways to make coffee out there, but I don’t think there’s better value for money/time than an aeropress.

garrettw87,
@garrettw87@kbin.social avatar

Call me weird, but I've done somewhat ok attempting to avoid the oils/fines with a French press by basically putting a paper towel over the glass before putting the plunger thing back into it. So the paper towel wraps around the metal mesh, not only adding its filtering to the mesh but also improving the seal it makes against the side of the glass. It does mean that I have to press it down more slowly before pouring, but that's just because it's doing its job so I don't mind. It also means that the mesh/plunger bit requires less cleaning afterward.

mrbigmouth502, to RedditMigration in Reddit breaks the law to quell protests - spez has gone too far
@mrbigmouth502@kbin.social avatar

What's the TL;DW version?

JonEFive,

Basically what we already know. Reddit is restoring comments that have been deleted by users possibly in violation of data privacy laws.

Louis goes a little farther by sharing the story of one particular user who tried multiple ways to delete their content including manually deleting every single comment one by one. Then to answer Reddit's response that user data is "anonomized" by disassociating it with the user account when the user deletes their account, the user points out that at least one of their posts has their full name in it, and by restoring that post against the user's wishes, they've violated California's data privacy laws.

He then goes into his typical cynical rant which I personally find entertaining but I know he rubs a lot of people the wrong way.
