Zagorath, to vexillology in What Could Replace the Australian Flag?
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

The video itself is really good. I didn’t agree with everything he said (the Triple Union, while not good, is still just so obviously way better than putting the Aboriginal flag in the canton), but certainly with most of it. The Great Southern Flag is a noble effort, but it just feels too…fidgety…to me. Too much going on. Too many small pieces. The use of 5 separate colours, the very small kangaroo, 3 different kinds of stars (5-pointed Epsilon star, four 8-pointed main Southern Cross stars, and the 7-pointed Federation Star), and the solid cross connecting the stars.

Honestly, I genuinely like the Golden Wattle. I like that it keeps the Federation Star within the negative space. I think wattles are a great symbol that we should reach for more often.

The video briefly touched on the shades of colours (in the blue of the Unity Flag), but didn’t touch on what I think makes them a significant design feature for Australian flags to play with. If you do a tour of Parliament House, there’s a good chance the tour guide will explain why the two chambers are the colours they are. Red for the Senate, after the UK’s House of Lords, and green for the House of Representatives/Commons. But unlike the very vibrant shades Westminster uses, Australia’s colours are chosen to suggest natural earthy tones of the outback. The green of a eucalyptus, and the ochre red of the dirt. I don’t know if that’s a design choice our flag should copy or not. But it’s worth thinking about.

Belittle is the female version of emasculate. This was dumb.

Dusktracer,

Belittle isn’t feminine. It’s gender neutral and not quite the same. The difference between the phrasing is subtle, but there. Belittling is when we try to make someone feel less important or to just disparage them. To emasculate someone is to paint them as less masculine or weak. We do have a reverse of emasculating, though. Which, we dont really have a term I know of to describe the de-feminizing of a woman. Fortunately, society seems to mostly depart from the more toxic views as it pertains to less feminine women now than before, but largely the opposite view is still dominant in most of the world when it comes to men.

Good video, but the text in the OP is terrible

Yeah my Recycle Lite software from then when they were called Propellerhead stopped working too as the key didn't activate anymore. Now I know why. They really don't give a fuck for a long time already.

How does the ‘first level is free, pay if you want the rest’ model hold up today? I recall when the original Doom came out. Everything, including network play (maybe not the BFG) was available to try. We were all playing pvp on the university LAN on the free version.

ninjan,

It died because to make games fit on discs/media they need to be compact making it very hard to ship a limited version without shipping all content. Back in the days generally all the “try before you buy” games shipped the full content leading to cracks that simply unlocked it.

Today a company that doesn’t have a hard-on for DRM could of course run with the model and just chalk up piracy to advertisment and people that wouldn’t buy the game anyway. Kinda like any company selling on GOG.

Of course those are the minority, most companies want / need DRM in some form and the model just works against it. It might be possible to make it work with something like Denuvo but I doubt anyone would be happy about that.

WarmSoda,

Demos are wide spread these days. There’s a ton of them for a wide range of games available on steam and the switch store. They’ve made a big comeback the past few years.

Heck, I just played the demo for Octopath Traveler 2, but this was a self-published demo by the studio. It was enough for me to know this game wasn’t for me but I’m thankful I didn’t have to buy it and refund it as a result.

WarmSoda, (edited )

Same. But I also played the triangle strategy demo and definitely want to get that eventually, which I wasn’t going to do because of Octopath.

Long live the demo

Stupid question, is the link an activity pub instance? It says instance, but I’m not sure of what it hooks up to. (I’m not techy)

Five,

It’s an instance of Invidious, which does not use ActivityPub. Invidious is software you can host to portal to YouTube while preventing most of google’s ability to track and advertise.

@pelespirit@sh.itjust.works avatar

Thanks for explaining, I thought it was a great setup for an activitypub type of vlogging, lol.

@ghjsh8@lemy.lol avatar

Just in case you didn’t know, there’s PeerTube, an ActivityPub-compatible software for video sharing ;-)

pelespirit,
@pelespirit@sh.itjust.works avatar

Thanks for that, I didn’t put vlogging and peertube together. I’m not sure why, that’s kind of stupid on my part.

WarmApplePieShrek,

I’d rather have a youtube link and people who want to use invidious can have a browser extension to redirect it.

The video makes good points, but unfortunately loads of the arguments made in this video could be fuel for these nutjobs to start arguing that cars are over-regulated.

There are already people who seem happy with low levels of regulation on firearms, I don't see how they'll accept the safety argument for car licensing.

I mean I know the raw stats are fairly easy to show that cars are one of the most dangerous things in the world (ranked up there with thinks like malaria) - but do those people care?

puppy,

There’s also a counter argument. Houses are also over regulated with exclusionary zoning. If they like to de-regulate housing then we can start the discussion from there.

Yeah, I hate it when things are more convenient, quicker to accomplish, take up less of the day and allow me to do more in less time! If I can’t spend more than two hours a day stuck in traffic am I even living!?

Yea, the people who fear 15 minute cities are absolutely bizarre. Running across one of these is a clear sign that the person has steeped themselves in all sorts of bullshit.

_haha_oh_wow_, to fuck_cars in Suburban Cycling Myths Busted: It's Closer Than You Think
@_haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works avatar

I live in a suburban neighborhood and ride my bike everywhere. I very rarely drive anymore and am probably going to end up selling my car.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I ebike regularly to work, but still far from everyday. 25km/15mi each way makes it a bit time consuming. But I live within walking distance of a grocery store, a gym, elementary, middle, & high school, multiple pharmacies, all sorts of medical facilities, multiple parks, cafes, restaurants, a transit station (that unfortunately doesn't actually get used except for rushhour, which is irrevelant for me), etc. Very little reason to drive outside of the commute here and things like trips to visit family. Still the infrastructure leaves some to be desired, but you don't even need a bike to get to most amenities in a reasonable time.

And I live in an area that is one of the most common go-to examples of car-centric infrastructure. Granted, much more sparsely populated suburbs do exist in the area as well.
