Is there any planned date for a mass delete? I would guess it would be more meaningful if many of us deleted on the same day.
Personally, I logged out of my account for the blackout and haven't been back -- I plan to delete my 3 accounts tomorrow before the 3rd party apps shut down.
“My number one concern right now as an advertiser would be that Reddit seems to be losing rapport with and control over their users. Reddit needs to talk to their community members now and work to regain their trust and support or risk losing brand advertisers long term.”
We’ll see. The article also notes that no company has pulled their ads from Reddit yet and even says that compared to some other sites, Reddit isn’t doing so bad (I’m assuming they’re implying Twitter’s refusal to remove hate speech).
A greater percentage of reddit is younger than some of them realise. So many redditors are going to be used to new reddit, and plug-and-play services in general. Kbin and Lemmy look like old.reddit, and they require them to understand the concept of what a 'server' is to even get started. This is knowledge they've never needed before to use the services they want to use.
Imagine spending all your life eating McDonald's and then somebody told you homemade burgers are way better quality, taste better, cheaper, etc; then when you ask how to get a taste of those bad boys they start with informing you that you'd need to grill them. It's not hard, it's just new.
they require them to understand the concept of what a 'server' is to even get started.
I've known 5 year olds start minecraft servers. And understand that each "world" is an "instance". But that's aside the point, as you're right that even Help-Desk IT people struggle to understand the difference between computer and server.
It's not hard, it's just new.
The "new" part is what gets people. All of this is new. Even the implementation of all of this "fediverse" is new. It will come with time! People probably didn't understand email vs snailmail, and probably had an even harder time with SMS/IM vs email when all of that came about just over 20-30 years ago. Most of these "complications" are from people that grew up knowing that the "internet" is basically 5 or 6 social media sites for very specific uses, and those 5 or 6 sites are older than most of the people using them, so that's all they know. Even for a dude in IT, the fediverse was a new concept to understand, and even difficult to understand how it could best be implemented for the masses.
I updated the Apollo app last night. Not only will I decline the refund, I also gave a $10 tip too. If you have a bit of spare cash I would suggest as many of you that can, do the same to show our appreciation, and it may help to cover costs for those that still accept the refund option.
RIP RIF. I'm another one who used it 99% of the time. I'm glad I found kbin and I'm mostly over reddit, but I'm not over RIF. Thank you for all those years. Fuck you u/spez for destroying the site I've been a part of for almost 10 years... in a single week.
As someone who designs software you are vastly overestimating users, they wake up with their shoes tied together and spill hot coffee on their lap before they even get to the website.
This is correct. I'm also excitedly watching Sync for Lemmy as Lemmy and Kbin are pretty neat so far and will only get better. I have been finding myself using all of the above.
Although @ljdawson and I have been vicious blood rivals in the past in the Reddit third-party Android apps sphere, we've been interacting more lately and see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. Great person and great developer.
Part of me thinks the rapid growth is over and that user retention is the new struggle; but part of me holds out hope that the reddit api finally dying will push over yet another wave of users
One worry I have is the opposite scale. Active user growth have been pretty linear so far, but the network effect is pushing user activity growth at a higher rate.
But there is still under 100 kbin servers.
If there is a burst of new users and post activity after the API change, will the system be able to scale up fast enough to cope?
It's the number of users logging in and hitting those servers that's the main issue. 44,000 users is a lot for one instance to be pushing content to. I wouldn't say it's just aggregating Lemmy content either though, there are plenty of popular communities on kbin as well, including this one.
I don’t see the decline refund page. But I changed my apple id into another mail address. I’ve contacted him since there’s no way I can decline now. Hopefully it can get stopped. But it took me some time to realize that i changed my apple id 😅
After I did my research on all the devs of the different Android and iOS apps...I discovered the app I had been using, BaconReader, was basically the only one backed by an Ad company (also somehow tied to Tmobile/Sprint). The rest of them are basically independent developers. So after learning that...not sorry to see it go. If there was some redemption arc by reddit I'd use another app. Good riddance.
Lack of a response to what was happening. I drew up this research in the middle of the protests...from them I saw nothing (expected something posted on their subreddit, I removed their app after finding nothing from them). It seemed like a lack of care. Because of that, this post by them seems disingenuous to me, it's in response to the adoring fans posting to their subreddit. How many of those people posting love in their subreddit know about who the owners of the app are. Put two and two together and you know this is who Spez was talking about when he said some were just not willing to talk. I asked the same question of everyone who was unwilling to talk....why. I found answers for some...some had their words misrepresented by Spez....some hadn't said anything that I found...such as BaconReader.
This kinda makes sense. When i first started using baconreader, i didn't see any adds. Then, after some update, ads started popping up, like alot of them...
Sync was my poison. I used it enough that I don't feel any particular need to ask for a refund... I got way more than my money's worth out of it. In fact, I'll pay the author again if a new Sync arrives with Kbin support.
Sync is an app that not only would I argue was the best Reddit third-party app, but one of the best Android apps in general. And it was made by one guy!
Sorry, Sync was an app. 😭
Likewise, I will throw money at the developer when / if he releases something kbin-compatible.
Same. Sync was amazing when I was on Android. Used BaconReader and RiF, and been on Apollo since switching to iOS, but Sync was/is the best. It’ll be missed.
I already couldn’t imagine paying a subscription for an app, but for that money to be going to reddit after the shit they pulled is unthinkable. I’m surprised users even want to support it at all. I do wish them well though, as Narwhal served me well for years.
