mojo, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?

Let me dress in cool trench coats without looking like some kind of creep. That and capes too.

brunofin,

I want to wear capes too

hsl, in Why are my subscriptions stuck on "pending"?

This is a support question, related to how to use Lemmy. Please see the sidebar for suggestions on where this question would fit.

Marduk73,
@Marduk73@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ignore this “you’re asking in the wrong place” response.

Others have been experiencing this too. It appears to have no real affect on your subscription status. I have a few like that as well. They still behave as if they are successfully subscribed.

Pfft. This dude. It’s like this guy’s where you google something to find the answer, arrive at a prospective link and “omg why are you asking, go Google it”.

PriorProject,

Do you realize that you’re advising OP to ignore a mod (in a reply to said mod) of this community who is being perfectly chill while informing OP about the published rule 3, which the community mods have stated they’re being relaxed about while so many new Lemmings are joining, but not giving up on forever?

Rule 3 is quoted below, and helpfully directs people to active communities that are dedicated to support:

Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, find help in the list of support alternatives below

Marduk73,

Yep. I realize it.

PriorProject,

Lol, upvoted. Good luck to you Don Quixote, I can think of nothing that can go wrong with this plan whatsoever.

brunofin,

Sounds like a “language users make the language” case. As in mods want this to be AskReddit but the community users want to use it differently.

PriorProject,

I mean, the mods are being chill about it so far. If they start dropping bans, the users trying to turn this into a support community won’t actually be users anymore and they can go create asklemmyaboutsupportbutalsootherstuffwhatever and mod it themselves. In this respect, lemmy communities differ from language evolution.

For my part, I’m here for a discussion sub. I participate heavily in lemmy support communities, but that’s not why I joined here.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

We get that, but just saying “go somewhere else to ask this” and not actually providing an answer at the same time comes off as pompous and OP isn’t likely to delete their post just to post it again elsewhere.

hsl,
@hsl@wayfarershaven.eu avatar

Mod here. The fun thing is that I actually did remove this post three hours ago when I posted that comment. Due to federation issues, people are still able to comment on it.

These are the rules for this community. If you’d prefer another, you may want to check out !asklemmy.

amenotef, (edited ) in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

These are my list of changes. I still don’t use it full-time but I use it outside working hours. I use Ubuntu 23.04 and I dual boot with windows 11:

Install gnome extensions and “dash to panel”

Install Chrome from google site (.deb package)

Same for Steam

Install mangohud sudo apt install mangohud Source: github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud#debian-ubuntu

Disable Intel Bluetooth device so the realtek one is the only one. (Now there is a new option to also disable Intel Wifi adapter in the same word~ document).

Change default display for “Lockscreen”

Change the local time ( timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock enabled RTC in local time.

For Ryujinx I added this “vm.max_map_count=524288” to /etc/sysctl.conf because it was saying it fixes a crash with TOTK

Disk Performance (System hanging with encryption on the SSD): Disabled the ‘no-read-workqueue" and “no-write-workqueue” sudo gedit /etc/crypttab Added “discard” “no-read-workqueue” and “no-write-workqueue” at the end of the string.Looks like this: dm_crypt-0 UUID=4170cddc-59a8-4f4e-afdb-125f70004fef none luks,discard,no-read-workqueue,no-write-workqueue sudo update-initramfs -u -k all sudo reboot

Enable OC en AMD card (Source: linuxgamingcentral.com/…/increase-power-on-amd-gp…) sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Somewhere in that file should be a GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line, followed by a pair of quotation marks. In my case it looks like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash” We add amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff at the end. Example: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff” Sudo update-grub

Install codec bluetooth AAC for Pixel Buds (codec is lighter than SBC-XQ)

Be sure that bluetooth dongle MPOW is on USB2 and no USB3 which causes interferences (at least in Linux I can suffer it, but not in Windows).

Do the tutorial to make BT devices to work with “Dual Boot” between Ubuntu and W11 without needing to re-pair them everytime (for dualsense and pixelbuds).

Enable AMD ROCM (used to run apps like SDXL).

elkaki, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

Yes, I discussed with an andrew tate fan that asked “why do people get angry when I don’t respect pronouns of trans people” or something to that effect, a real shit stain but I think he got banned after a few hours

mojo, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

Figure out your favorite hobby or whatever makes you feel the most fulfilled/happy. Look for a viable job/career that is related to that. Figure out the path to get into that career.

ShartyWaffles, in It's possible to bathe a newborn kitten with fleas?

luthis,

No! Never dunk kittens in fleas! Use a cloth to gently apply the fleas.

Kolanaki, in Homebrew insulin or diy 3D printed meat?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

They already have chocolate 3D printers, and lab meat is almost or already at market somewhere and would also actually make someone money in our largely capitalist dominated world, so I’m gonna go with that.

_cerpin_taxt_,

Chocolate 3D printers are a hell of a longshot from 3D printing genetic tissue lolol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I’m just thinking that having food safe printing stuff makes it slightly closer to reality than the other option, even if the medium would require reengineering some of the internal parts.

DoisBigo, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

You want the job that is offered to you, pays good, and won’t feel like hell every day. This job may or may not be related to your field of study, but you better study something useful if you want to be taken seriously.

Stop thinking that you can pick and choose, sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t. Some people can, most people can’t.

SamHandwich,

This this. I’m in my 30s and have hopped around jobs for a decade, and now I’m considering going back to school for accounting. My first degree choice was biology, which I still love but it wasn’t at all practical.

trouser_mouse, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?
@trouser_mouse@lemmy.world avatar

There is plenty of rudeness, hostility, and general toxicity and bigotry to go around. But there is also a lot of kindness, thoughtful consideration, and people who want to do the best for the platform and communities forming here.

I feel like the amount of more challenging or unwanted behaviour has gone up just in the time I’ve been here (hopefully not because of me!). From hardly seeing much of that in the first week or so, to then gradually seeing more and more as presumably more people move over from Reddit.

Be interesting to see how instances and communities respond, and if a more firm line will be drawn.

dystop,
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like the amount of more challenging or unwanted behaviour has gone up just in the time I’ve been here

I see that too, but I attribute that to the growing number of users here. It’s an unavoidable part of growth, sadly.

trouser_mouse,
@trouser_mouse@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely! I think it will be good to keep an eye how users, communities and the mods and admins of different instances respond - because where the line is drawn or isn’t, or when people stay silent on important issues happening on their servers or in their communities can speak volumes. (I’m not saying I have seen anything like this yet, not implying anything - just interested to see how things will unfold over time and hopeful for the future!)

dmmeyournudes, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

Simple compatibility and useability. It works with nothing and handles like I’m trying to have a debate over single channel walkie talkies. Does your audio interface work? Probably not. How about your keyboard software? Nope, not that either. Well surely it supports the most common GPUs for AI, gaming, and content development? No, it’s not officially supported. So when the only way you can use Linux without complications is just barebones equipment to edit flat text files or browse the internet in a web browser, you just ask yourself why bother when windows doesn’t force me to the terminal when I want to solve a simple problem.

baascus, in Homebrew insulin or diy 3D printed meat?
@baascus@lemmy.world avatar

My bet’s on 3D printed meat making it to our plates before we’re DIY’ing insulin.

Regulation for medications like insulin is super tight (rightly so!). You can’t just whip up life-saving stuff in your garage without some heavy-duty checks and balances from the FDA and the like. Plus, the DIY part is insane, we’re talking high-level genetic engineering and biochemistry here, not homebrew beer.

Then there’s the demand part. The hype for environmentally-friendly, cruelty-free meat is real and growing every day. If they can get the taste and texture right, not to mention a decent price, lab-grown meat is gonna fly off the shelves.

Meanwhile, homebrew insulin’s got a smaller audience - mainly type 1 diabetics and some type 2s. And given that botched insulin can be lethal, a lot of folks might stick to the tried-and-true stuff from pharmaceutical companies.

So yeah, I’m thinking lab-grown burgers beat homebrew insulin to the punch. But hey, it’s 2023, who knows what’s around the corner? Fun to think about though!

festus, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

I suppose I can technically answer this. I do use Linux full-time now and have for several years, but prior to that I had a few false starts where I’d switch back to Windows. Usually it was because I’d encounter some technical issue I just didn’t know how to fix besides reinstalling the whole OS, or a graphics driver issue. For example, at one point when I had an NVIDIA graphics card only the newest drivers from NVIDIA’s website supported it but the ‘stable’ drivers in Ubuntu’s repo didn’t, so I had to manually install the drivers. Except then whenever the kernel was updated by Ubuntu (basically every week) my display stopped working and I’d have to switch into a TTY and manually reinstall the drivers.

Now I know how I’d fix that (setup some rule to reinstall the drivers whenever the kernel updates, which I believe is now the default anyway), or use a PPA containing the latest NVIDIA drivers, or use AMD instead - but really any kind of problem that requires the user to both diagnose and fix the issue prevents non-technical people from adopting it.

quadrotiles, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

There is definitely nothing wrong with you. There’s a reason the phrase “childlike wonder” exists. It’s normal for the newness and novelty of everything to amaze a child, and it’s normal for experiences to become routine to adults. Even if you do experience something new, there’s a very good chance that it’s similar enough to something you’ve experienced before. Brains are designed to find patterns and relate things back to past experiences as part of a survival instinct.

But there is also nothing wrong with people who don’t have the experience I described above. The above experience is probably more common for people with neurotypical brains. I’ve never been able to relate to “not feeling” or “feeling less”, even though it seems to be quite common. My feelings are always a live wire, dialed up to 100 (and honestly, I’m over people - including doctors - telling me how nice that must be). But there’s nothing “wrong” with my brain. It just functions differently, with different strengths and weaknesses. It’s like comparing a car and a motorbike. They have different driving sensations, require different skill sets and safety precautions, but they’re both vehicles that will get you from A to B.
