Zarxrax, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

It’s kind of the opposite for me. Like many people said, when you are young, every experience mostly feels new. However, when everything feels new to you, there’s really nothing special about it. For me, I always embraced the familiar. I look back at my memories of family vacations with disappointment, because as everyone else was wanting to go and do fun things, I was complaining about how I would rather be watching TV or playing my gameboy. Now as an adult, I understand how precious our experiences can be. I look out at a mountain and I appreciate the beauty of it. I think about the history that has taken place around it. I think about how other people might have experienced it. I get so much more from it than I ever would have as a child.

Same here. It simply comes from within. Everything now is so special because I’m aware how fleeting everything is.

Thanks for your comment. It resonated a lot with my experience.

“If you give someone enough rope, they eventually hang themselves”

Following this mantra has almost always worked out for me.

feck_it,

I wish my parents used that method too. I was a way too spoiled bright eyed summer child back then

I can’t help but feel pity when I see a child or teenager up to their waist in materialism and appearances.

Some day, many of those children will have a brutal awakening when the realize that they can’t live the way they did growing up forever.

fckreddit,

It’s called growing up. Everyone has to go through it. We did, they will. Pain is inevitable…

We should bring back codpieces and flamboyant colored pantaloons, frills, and velvet jackets, at least in winter. Summer thong & codpiece would be fine.

HobbitFoot, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

Yeah, it is normal, but it also sounds like depression.

birdcat, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?
@birdcat@lemmy.ml avatar

Shouldn’t it be the other way around? I was very ashamed of liking Avril Lavigne, today I blast that banger whenever I feel like it 😎

Jaywarbs,

I was watching fireworks last week, and this little girl said, “Avril Lavigne completes this!” and started singing Complicated. She was so excited!

So many artists growing up I was told it was shameful to listen to, but now fuck all of that. Gonna go listen to some avril myself!

HunkyBrewster, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

I was big into 311 in high school, before “Amber” came out. I still think “down” is a decent song but I don’t think I could bring myself to listen to any of the rest of their catalogue.

“Mallyhacked” - meaning something that is broken or destroyed. I heard this phrase a lot from older folks during my childhood, but never by anyone who wasn’t from my area. My SO didn’t believe it was a real word so I did some digging and I think that it is likely a very regionally accented version of “malahack”.

Urban Dictionary says that malahack comes from the Lumbee-English slang of southern North Carolina. I don’t think that’s quite accurate because I’m not from anywhere close to North Carolina. My preferred reference is from The Vocabulary of East-Anglia: An Attempt to Record the Vulgar Tongue of the Twin Sister Counties Norfolk and Suffolk, as it Existed in the Last Twenty Years of the Eighteenth Century, and Still Exists: with Proof of Its Antiquity from Etymology and Authority; in Two Volumes · Volume 2 by Robert Forby, 1830:

Malahack, v. A word ludicrously fabricated, which means to cut or carve in an awkward and slovenly manner.

We actually do have a similar post that is pinned - however, it doesn’t federate to all instances correctly due to a known issue.

I very much appreciate the sentiment, thank you!

We have a number of suggestions for communities that welcome support questions in our sidebar.

With that said, we do already have a post outlining why support questions don’t belong in this community: lemmy.ml/post/1223478

Because this isn’t an open question, I will remove it now.

Normally said after I tried to explain something and I’m only getting a blank stare in response. Or after a meeting when I know everyone is confused.
