secret_ninja, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

There’s a lot of good advice here. I just want to add that you absolutely do not need to go back to school. It’s a waste of money! I’m 100% self-taught, work in “DevOps” and not a single employer in the last 6 years has asked me about my education or credentials. I enjoy it and it pays well. You don’t have to do DevOps though. Lots of jobs in IT and employers are competing for skills.

dream_weasel, (edited )

How many employers have you gone through in 6 years?

secret_ninja,

3 (all contracts and by choice). But I did at least a dozen interviews in the same period and no one ever asked about any diplomas.

dream_weasel,

Ah the interview number makes sense with your post. At first glance it read like you had had a seriously large amount of jobs in that time which didn’t seem very desirable.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I don’t know why I am languishing as senior desktop support then. It seems I lack the ability to even get my resume in front of anyone, let alone an interview.

secret_ninja,

Believe it or not, with the right skill set (ie if you have skills that employers are looking for) you won’t even need to apply. Headhunters WILL find your linkedin. Right now the market is noticeably slow and thousands of IT professionals got laid off in the last few months alone. The economy will recover soon though so maybe get ready for when that happens by learning new skills. AI, big data, IaC, etc are all in demand.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

This is why now it is a good time for me to hunker down and simply learn and get through this tough time. Much as I hate dealing with the over-privileged assholes in state government, I’ll do what I have to whilst learning.

zikk_transport2, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Unpopular opinion: everyone focuses on productivity, then on features. Literally zero consideration for performance. Also lack of customization. I can flash Linux, hackintosh or any other random OS on any laptop I buy, but not on smartphone…

Kind of sucks that my Cat S62 Pro smartphone suck ass with it’s slowness and lags and I can blame Cat as a manufacturer for that, but lack of standards (so I can flash generic OS onto it simply sucks).

So I am forced to buy new phone every 1-2 years because it gets slow… 🤷

Oh wait! Batteries are not replaceable! USB-C port is also incresibly hard to change!

B16_BR0TH3R,

There’s lots of focus on performance from vendors like Apple, Samsung and others operating in the same space. Cat phones, however, are known for having crappy perfomance due to the cheap CPUs they use.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Have you thought about flashing a custom rom on your phone, or getting a phone that supports custom roms if you don’t have one already?

I have an old samsung galaxy s5 still running LineageOS and while a little slow it’s still usable as a backup in case my current phone shits the bed.

The process is fairly straightforward, and if you’ve installed linux on a laptop you can install LOS on a phone.

mojo,

This is why I exclusively stick to Pixels. Honestly don’t really care about the hardware, it’s okay. But it’s the only phone that lets you flash it and reflash it with a custom key so you can have verified boot on a custom OS.

Android is a tricky situation, there’s very few phones that actually allow you to unlock the bootloader, and only Pixels can do it securely. Samsungs are basically a no go unless it’s an older phone that has gotten cracked open. Like Samsung S5 old.

So ironically Google phones are by far the best to degoogle your phone lol, and they actually go above and beyond to let you do so. Even the new Pixel fold and tablets support this. I personally recommend GrapeheneOS or CalyxOS for these devices, both are really good.

I choose my custom OS first and then pick the actual physical phone second. For me, I value software over hardware, but obviously that’s important too.

ablackcatstail, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

More to the point: where does anybody go for any reliable news? It seems like most news is now using hyperbole to make it entertainment. We have old man Rupert to thank for basically destroying a respected profession. That’s my 0.02 anyhow.

Marks,
@Marks@kbin.social avatar

I subscribe to WSJ, NYT, WAPO, and my local newspaper. You need to read all sides of a story in order to get a reliable take.

Also recommend: Memeorandum to see multiple sources to same story.

Zarxrax,

I find these two to be good for finding sources with different perspectives:

www.allsides.com

ground.news

After some time, you might see that there are a few specific sites that you like, and you can just start going to them directly.

HailHodor,

+1 to Ground News. I browsed them with a free account for a short time before subscribing to the middle tier. Their tools are really terrific at getting me to look at multiple sides of the same stories, and the blind spot feature is fantastic. I’ve been very satisfied with it and go to it multiple times a day.

OceanSoap,

This is awesome, I’m going to check it out, thank you.

Capricorny90210,

I also enjoy ground news.

zdrvr,

While not perfect AP and Reuters are ok. The news they report is honest but their shortcoming is what they don’t report.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Those are pretty good examples. They are still not great places to go but they certainly suck a whole lot less than the others. Hell, even the weather is now being reported as entertainment.

InquisitiveApathy,

This is how I do it as well. In general, understanding the overall bias of each news organization is more important to keeping yourself informed. You can combat the echo chamber effect by knowing what the biases of each source is and using differing sourcing to try to get as complete a picture as you can.

I would add to your list to check BBC, Al Jazeera, and NPR if you’re US focused.

MrPear,

I wish for AP to have RSS feeds, but they don’t. I think they and Reuters are aome of the better outlets out there and I’ve been (re)discovering RSS lately, but AP is one of the few news outlets that don’t seem to support it :(

JohnOnABuffalo,

NPR and PBS, publicly funded does not mean government controlled.

Kalkaline,
@Kalkaline@lemmy.one avatar

AP and Reuters run the stories and everyone adds their opinions on top of that, or they rehash some Twitter thread. NPR tends to take those news stories and at least bring in competent analysts in to speak about them. I’d stick with those 3, for the most “fair” view of the happenings in the world.

svdasein, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?
@svdasein@lemmy.world avatar

I lived on a boat for many years and most of those at commercial fishing docks. Someone left a 5 gallon bucket of anchovies out in front of their boat on the dock for a couple days - with the cover on. I was present when it was opened. PTSD level bad.

o_p,

I once left a plastic tub of bird seed next to the shed one winter. Something chewed it’s way through the plastic, got stuck and died. Since there was now a hole the rain turned it into a weird soup that I discovered during the hot summer. I can’t even imagine the smell if that was anchovies, it was bad enough as it was.

Lmaydev, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?

I have Crohn’s desease and some of the smells I’ve generated over the years are unconscionable.

I cleared the dance floor at a club once.

It’s not just like a normal person’s bad fart. It’s something totally different. Something evil.

quinacridone,
@quinacridone@lemmy.ml avatar

While I fortunately don’t have Crohns, I do have periods of horrible IBS so I can relate to the demon-farts, one evening in the park, my bf had to run away from me after I dropped a stinker, this was outside

Clearing a dance floor though? Respect

MigratingtoLemmy, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

I think I’m the only one here who likes mainstream J-pop.

Anybody for Aimer, ReoNa, LiSa, Yorushika, Minami, TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, nZk, Uru, Tielle, Yuuri?

No? I suppose I’m alone in my listening habits. I do like baroque music though

cccc,

I’d like to be. Got any recommendations?

MigratingtoLemmy,

The artists I mentioned in my comment are whom I have listened to recently

pelley, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@pelley@lemmy.world avatar

For the past year my workout has simply been roller skating. And yes, it is joyous every time!

skillissuer, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

because they are campists: if america bad, then everyone who opposes america good. support for land-grabbing nationalists like putin is one thing, but some even support iranian government

moose_cannon, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Ctrl + Alt + up arrow key sets the monitor output to be upside down.

I also am a fan of making the cursor huge and turning on pointer trails.

MythicWolf,

These are good pranks with the right level of irritating. They make it hard to work but not impossible to do the work

perishthethought,

This happened to me. When you didn’t know this is possible in windows, it takes a surprisingly long time to fix, but there’s no real damage done.

TeaHands, in What replacement for each major social media do you use
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t really do Twitter but was big into Instagram for a while until the whole thing started with them pushing reels, so honestly Mastodon is more of a replacement for IG in my particular case. I can upload images, so there’s no real need to keep a separate Pixelfed. Pixelfed users who just want to see images can in fact follow people on Mastodon, and just get their images. I can also follow people on Pixelfed and see them in my Mastodon feed. So that covers all the bases really.

Still use Discord plenty, never really had a problem with it although I do use it for its intended purpose rather than trying to turn it into a forum which is where a lot of servers seem to go wrong.

Don’t use FB, although I understand Friendica is the main replacement software for that.

Been considering looking into PeerTube but it seems best for very short videos just due to file storage. Mine tend to be more around the 15-20 minute mark on average so not sure that would work.

andyMFK, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I started running to lose some weight recently. And I genuinely enjoy it.

It’s alone time, time to think, or listen to an album or podcast and just be alone.

I enjoy the progress I’m seeing. Every week I can run further than I could the last week, every week gets easier and faster, and beating my pb is a real endorphin rush. Every week I weigh less than I did the previous week.

I enjoy feeling proud of myself. It would be so easy to sit on the couch and watch Netflix. Or play a silly little video game. And that’s what most people do. I enjoy not being most people. I enjoy putting in the work to better myself.

I enjoy pushing myself. When my legs burn and I don’t think I can run anymore, but I push through that and run another kilometer. the runners high is real. Not comparable to a fun drug, but still feels good.

So yeah, I’m not a fitness guy, but working out definitely has it’s place and can be enjoyable

My current phone is 6. I have changed battery once. The only problem is internal memory.
