Cyder, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Maybe you have the same problem I have: my wife is still a republican. When that kind of stuff shows up, I know she has been watching it on the family PC. She’s not that tech savvy, so I usually go in later and block or limit some of it. It’s a pain to fight the algorithms.

AquaTofana,

As a woman, I can never understand how other women can be Republican.

My mom was a Dem growing up, but then she fell down the religious rabbit hole after I left home and it was all downhill from there.

My little sister though? I have zero idea how she ended up Republican. It’s fucking bizarre. 🤷‍♀️

ChillPill,

Its the “Leopards eating people’s faces party”; not the " Leopards eating my face party". GOSH!

PS - is that a community here yet?

SailorMoss, (edited )

I agree with and get the point of the metaphor. But the leopard metaphor always seemed a bit tortured to me. There’s got to be a cleaner way to communicate that point.

ChillPill,
@ChillPill@lemmy.world avatar

You’d think so; and yet, so many people that metaphor is directed at don’t even realize…

Event_Horizon,

My thoughts. It never starts as full blown conservatism but reaches that point by a branching topic. My brother was always financially conservative, boot straps and all that, but over the last 12-18 months as the media he consumes moves further right he has become more socially conservative, because these people were inline with his thinking before so they must be right now of course.

I caught him going on about trans people corrupting his kids a couple of weeks ago. My brother might be a dick but he wouldn’t have been saying that 5-10 years ago.

Cyder,

In our case, we both grew up in a conservative state with conservative parents. But over time, I drifted away from it (and it drifted in crazy land). However she still hangs on. She’s come around on a few things. She often falls into the false equivalence mindset that both sides are just as bad. And whenever she starts to bring up any anti-vax or Joe Rogan BS, I try to stomp on that real quick. But I know she will always vote for anyone with an R by their name when it comes down to it.

stappern,

people in minorities are republican, the shit doesnt make sense.

stappern,

condolences…

schnapsidee, in If you could witness any historical event firsthand, which one would you choose and why?

The crucifixion and “rebirth” of Jesus. I’m not religious, but I’d be curious what actually happened.

It’s probably one of the most influential events in modern human history and while the truth of it is probably very boring, I’d still like to know.

redballooon,

Question was about historical events…

schnapsidee,

It is a historical event. Jesus was a real person, and there are a lot of sources - outside the bible - about him as a person and his crucifixion.

That’s my entire point. I’d like to know the truth behind the religion. I find it absolutely fascinating how historical events get warped over time to become a religion that billions of people still believe in today.

novibe,

Sadly there are not a lot of extra-biblical sources on Jesus and his life actually.

There is one, a single one. And it’s pretty bad. Josephus. He basically mentions “James, the brother of Jesus they call Christ”, in the middle of a text not about Jesus at all.

And that’s it.

schnapsidee,

I’m not a historian, but Tacitus definitely mentioned Jesus’ crucifixion. Saying there are a “a lot” of source is an exaggeration, you’re right about that, but there’s basically no doubt that Jesus was a real, historical figure. (I’m not saying that you’re disputing that, I’m just still stuck on the guy actually thinking that Jesus wasn’t real.)

Obviously Christian sources can’t be taken at face value, but there’s enough corroborating evidence - be it archaeological or written - that proves that at least some of the things in the gospels are based on facts, even if it’s certainly embellished and a lot of it likely just made up and/or warped over time.

FarFarAway, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

We hung one of those uv light Bug zapper lamps outside for use on during the evening hours, as it’s too hot during the day for them to really come out. We also got a few of the smaller ones that plug into your regular outlets inside, from Amazon. This has cut down on the ones in the house drastically.

Of course remove standing water, and keep tall grasses trimmed. They actually make thier homes and can reproduce in tall grass esp when you have daily sprinklers (like our aerobic septic system) we have deer that stop by and trim our grass for us.

Our community was built on an endangered toad habitat, which is sad but also helpful. (We really try to keep everything as natural as we can around the house so as not to harm them)

But really the bug zapper were God send

DarkThoughts,

I've had ear ringing properly once for like 3 weeks. Never had such a hard time sleeping because the quietness just makes it all the more louder. Really drove me insane and was glad when it started to slowly recede. Good chance I would just eff myself if it were permanent.

SomeoneElse, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?

Needlessly censoring words like sex. It wasn’t necessary on Reddit and it certainly isn’t necessary now.

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I find it absolutely mind blowing that people are generally accepting that as okay on most social media platforms.

SomeoneElse,

I can only assume that people don’t understand why it was brought in on YouTube and TikTok in the first place because so many people do it when it isn’t remotely necessary. If you make your living posting on social media, then fair enough, I understand you need to fall inline with the rules of the platform. But why the hell would you self censor posts you don’t make money from? Utterly ridiculous.

Galluf,

I agree. It’s absolutely absurd that would say something along the lines of “Fuck, I got r*ped, what do I do?”

I’m of the opinion that you shouldn’t censor any words. If you feel the need to censor it, then just don’t say it. If you want to discuss it, then be able to say it. You should be able to say something like “X called Y a nigger”.

pizzaschaartje,

Censorship like that was introduced to make the platform appealing to advertisers. I’d say just don’t give power over how to run the platform to advertisers.

wabafee, (edited ) in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Use a mosquito coil, manual way is to have huge pan put some oil then start swinging around the general area of the mosquitos you will eventually catch one. Put bleach on areas with possible mosquito larvae or where there is likely stagnant water in it. Introduce spiders and geckos in your home. Could also plant lavander/or any plant that is mosquito repellent lots online and introduce frogs in your garden.

DJDarren, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

There is some good advice in this thread, but if you do have ADHD, then the advice is only as good as your ability to carry it out, and saying “just do the thing” will only end up demoralising you.

From my perspective (42, diagnosed with ADHD four years ago), it’s been damn near impossible for me to noticeably improve myself. It’s only when I reflect on my progress that I begin to notice positive changes.

Ultimately, it’s about training your perspective on a task. Are you failing to do things, or are you choosing to prioritise other tasks instead. Do those other tasks have positive outcomes (however tenuous they may be)? If this is the case, then you could work on choosing to prioritise the tasks that are expected of you.

In terms of my working day, my job is an issue for me, as it doesn’t really have a set form, and is almost entirely self-led. If I don’t do what’s expected of me, no one really notices, and that’s actually a problem for me, because left to my own devices I’ll gladly spend all day fucking about online, then feel like shit because I’ve not been productive*. So I’ve learned to tackle this by physically writing myself a To Do list first thing in the morning, that I then input into a daily timetable spreadsheet. Then I use an app called Cold Turkey to block access to websites of my choosing for a period of time. Only then am I able to focus on the tasks at hand.

In time, your brain will (hopefully) begin to mould itself around a different way of being, and while it will not likely become second nature to you, it will become easier to recognise when your distraction has taken control.

*of course, almost all of the problems we face are as a result of being forced to exist in a capitalist society, where we’re all trained to assign our personal worth to the worth of the work we produce. If we neurodivergents were able to live outside that paradigm, we’d be fine.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, this is what I’ve found too unfortunately. Brute forcing yourself to do stuff only progresses you at a snails pace.
I’m waiting to get diagnosed but its still a few months off so I’m trying this for now…

I don’t think an app like cold turkey would work for me (don’t trust that I won’t disable it), but what I have managed to do in the past is dedicate a certain device to work tasks only, and also ban myself from using the internet in one certain room (I essentially tricked my brain to pretend that there was no WiFi there). I coukd focus way better in that room knowing that if I needed to use the internet, I’d first have to go all the way down the coridor.

Mikina,

Just a headsup - don’t focus too much on meds, it won’t really help that much if you’re also lacking willpower.

I have the same problem as you, but have started meds about half a year ago. It helps a little bit, but also made me realize that whenever I’m stressed or have to do something I’m uncertain of, the problems are back.

I thought it’s anxiety that’s stopping me, because right now I have to finish my thesis to hand in in a week, and I’ve been sitting home and staring at the screen unable to work, progressing at a snails pace for two weeks already, to the point I will not be able to make it.

Due to that, I’ve gotten a short term medication for anxiety, because I thought that’s what’s stopping me and I can’t get over it.

It didn’t help, and while I wasn’t feeling that awful, I still didn’t manage to force myself to work more, and even though I would’ve comfortably made it, I progressed so slow that now I probably won’t. But it made me realize that the problem wasn’t anxiety, but willpower, and that the focus on it was just an excuse to justify postponing work.

I’m not saying that meds will not help you, but make sure you don’t fall to the same trap as I did - I used waiting them as an excuse for too long, that I’ve learned to just be OK with procrastinating. And when I finally got them, it didn’t help much , because I never tried building the willpower and have gotten too used to the excuses that even when the “need to wait for meds, nothing I can do” excuse wasn’t true, I was still turning to procrastination by habit. Or you’ll just think “meds aren’t helping, I need stronger”.

If you start forcing yourself, even if at slow pace, to not be OK with procrastination, then the meds will be a miracle that will suddenly make it so you don’t have to struggle so much anymore. If you on the other hand learn to give up trying and accept the excuse that you need the meds and there’s no point, and that it will be easier once you have them - my experience is that it won’t, because then getting rid of the internalization of excuses only made it as hardy, or even harder, than it was without them.

jandar_fett,

Thank you for posting this OP, and thank you for your reply to OP!

I literally just got back from my therapist (3rd visit) and he basically said the same stuff you’re saying about neurodivergence of this kind only becoming a problem when we’re forced to follow the rules of an artificial construct we call “modern civilization.” Thanks for your post. I’ve long suspected I could have ADHD (was diagnosed with ADD as a child) , but of course, ADD doesn’t really exist, and I suppose the research on things like this was more or less in its infancy, so I took prescrived children’s speed for a while, it made me worse. Yes, Ritalin is methamphetamine, and anyway. I started therapy to work on identifying my problems and I never mentioned ADHD, but he said all my complaints about my own behavior points towards it. My job is in the food service industry and it has been for many years, so the chaos of that could have masked some of the stronger “symptoms”, and I imagine if I had an open ended career I would be in trouble with my lack of focus and constant procrastination.

Do you mind giving me more details on how you do your to-do list and the table? I would like to try something like it because I think it might help.

Thanks again for your reply to OP. and thanks again to OP for the post and hang in there. Adaptability is humanities greatest strength…

ablackcatstail, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

The main reason to do it is when the manufacturer no longer releases security updates for the phone. Given the security history and the typical corporate attitude of caring little for the customer, I want to minimize the risk posed by not having a very out of date operating system.

Coreidan,

You don’t need a new phone every year to get this.

AdamEatsAss,

Some manufacturers drop support after a few years. It’s usually less frequent than every year but if you were worried about spyware or someone getting all those weird pictures you have saved to your camera roll it could make sense to upgrade for peace of mind.

Coreidan,

“After a few years”. So if you have a few years why are you buying a new home every year?

Be honest with yourself. You’re addicted.

dragnet,

Wtf? Its a ridiculous BS situation that support is dropped so fast, but if you do anything remotely sensitive on your phone you should absolutely use a device receiving security support.

weew, (edited )

except even “short” support is two years, major companies like Samsung, Apple, and Google give 4+ years. The “gotta upgrade every year for security” is an excuse, not a reason.

Gecko,
@Gecko@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly just switch to a manufacturer that provides security updates for longer periods of time. My iPhone 5S, released nearly 10 years ago and is still getting them. Fairphone is another great example.

No - they’re blocking out any users from accessing the wider fediverse through threads.

They’re entirely welcome to access the fediverse through any of the countless instances that are not owned by grotesquely destructive megacorporations.

dartos,

If you’re in the know, sure, but if the fediverse interacts with threads we could expose literally billions of people to the larger fediverse.

Maybe while the fediverse is still getting it’s legs defederating is the move, but I mean literally billions of people being made aware of the fediverse would be amazing.

Melatonin, in Hey Lemmy, what are your favorite ear worms?

Every song is an earthworm to me (I sing or hum constantly) but there are TWO SONGS that TRUMP EVERY SONG and destroy my playlist, playing non-stop for at least a week after I hear them, sometimes just mentioning them is enough. I hate them so much, they are like my nemesis(es).
