king_dead, in What are your favorite (Youtube) video's/documentaries of all time that you can watch again and again?

Jon Bois' documentary on Lonnie Smith. Probably one of the greatest documentaries of all time https://youtu.be/wTM_eN8AZeQ

SuperBobby, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?

Let's do it.

MementoMori, in I need to survive for 3 days while pooping as much as possible. I can pee as often as I like. It can take up loads of space. What food do I pack?
@MementoMori@lemmy.ml avatar

This is the high quality content I come here for.

infinitevalence, in Need help with finding the right security camera for my needs. Any ideas?
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

WiFi sucks for cameras when possible you should always run a POE camera for both power and data.

I also always suggest avoiding app subscriptions because then the period of support is out of your control and they can cut you off from an otherwise working camera and you have no recourse.

m.reolink.com/us/product/rlk8-520d4/?attribute_pa…

I find reolink an acceptable balance between functionally, cost, and accessibility.

It’s not the best it’s far from the worst.

xtremeownage, in It would be cool to have Lemmy pen pals. Asklemmy, what are your hobbies and what's your life like?

Software developer in his 30s. I built automation for a living. I automate my house as a hobby. I automate all things.

(I also live building racecars)

lml,

That's something I want to get into. I want to set up that self hosted software, forget what it's called, but you can integrate with IoT devices just like you can with a mainstream assistant service like Google Home.

What I really want to do is automate my blinds, which are the chain loop type, so I can say "house, open the living room blinds" like they did in Smart House, the Disney channel original movie (or maybe that was Home Alone 4, but we don't talk about that one). I found a little motorized device that integrates with these chain blinds but it was a bit pricey. Of course if I tried to make it with my own Arduino etc it would be an ugly mess.

RadDevon,
@RadDevon@lemmy.ml avatar

Sounds like you’re talking about Home Assistant maybe?

lml,

That's the one--thanks!

JetpackJackson, in How do I reach the right people here on Lemmy?
@JetpackJackson@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, just by seeing your post I’ve decided to join your community cause I keep meaning to learn guitar/bass xD but also having people find it on places naturally like browse.feddit.de works great too

RichardBonham, in What is your favorite way to spend money?
@RichardBonham@kbin.social avatar

By dollar amount this year, it would seem to be home repairs, medical care and entertaining.

SlovenianSocket, in What is your favorite way to spend money?
@SlovenianSocket@lemmy.ca avatar

Thrifting. I’m always finding really cool stuff I can either use or resell for a profit

Kurt, in How did Ikea's Blajah became the symbol of the trans community ?
@Kurt@lemmy.one avatar

I don't know about the trans stuff, but Blåhaj has this neat little feature: https://twitter.com/FatherMcGruder/status/1429470778412699652?t=BcBVKBA4DIPtVIif__2c5w&s=19

estebiu,

Sorry, pal. I just like hyperlinks.

WhoRoger, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

High protein, low fiber diet.

It's a real thing, pilots of U2 spy planes that needed to fly for ~18 hours straight without any possibility of pooping, needed to be on a special diet for a few days before a mission.

What exactly it consisted of I don't know, but this is the internet, so I'm sure it can be found. I suspect mainly beef. Maybe jerky?

mizu6079,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. I'll try to find some food like that tomorrow. I have only 3 days to prepare.

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

For real, ask on some aviation community or Reddit. You'll find real pilots with very specific experience.

My guess would still be beef jerky, plus it's light and doesn't spoil. Also I'd start asap, so you can still get empty before the "trip" and not have much inside left.

TheShane,

Reddit?

I'd that like Digg or Tumblr? Doesn't ring a bell...

Jimi_Hotsauce,

Reddit? damn near took it out for a nice dinner!

vegivamp,
@vegivamp@feddit.nl avatar

There is something called low-residue diet, often needed before or after certain medical procedures. You might Google information on that.

Parsecale,
@Parsecale@kbin.social avatar

This person is for sure going to pack themselves onto a pallet for cheap LTL interstate transport or possibly descending to the Titanic in a questionable craft.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Downthread they say they will also do a lot of walking. It does sound like some sort of... "informal migration" scheme.

Adama,

For anybody doing this seriously be careful. High salt/protein and low water sounds like a recipe for all kinds of issues.

For example extremely high water low salts can cause brain swelling and death.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

They should really drink oral rehydration salts instead of plain water.

Trebach,

For example extremely high water low salts can cause brain swelling and death.

And before that, you lose your balance, are vomiting and have diarrhea after you eat/drink something, and have seizures. Then your kidneys shut down.

The week in the hospital on IV fluids and dialysis recovering was not pleasant.

BasicWhiteGirl, (edited )
@BasicWhiteGirl@kbin.social avatar

I just watched a movie(bad thriller) about hikers. They popped some pill before they started to climb to stop them from pooping. Wonder what it was and if pilots also take something besides just diet.

1st,

Probably Imodium. Most hikers keep it in their pack in case they get gerardia

benignintervention,

I was incapacitated by the shits in Toronto and Imodium locked that shit down

AkioDAccolade,

I wish Imodium worked on what I have right now. Been dumping straight liquid into the can every 25-30 mins for 7 days. I'm dying over here.

Doc says either norovirus or ecoli, Imodium does not touch it.

bigkahuna1986,

I ate some undercooked turkey and dumped for 2 days and just wanted to die at the end. 7 days seems unimaginable.

InEnduringGrowStrong,

7 days is a lot.
Try and stay hydrated, don't pass out, get well.

apis,

If it is that bad then probably better out than in, but you may need to be on a drip to avoid dangerous dehydration, so keep your doctor updated. Hope you recover soon!

Thank you. I knew it was wrong, but it broke my brain and I couldn't think of the correct word, lol.

croobat, in What do you think of people making memes/jokes about the recent Titan tragedy?
@croobat@lemmy.world avatar

C'mon dude, we joke about war, cancer and shit

chaosbreon, in How did Ikea's Blajah became the symbol of the trans community ?

It's just cute, easy to cuddle, and in the colours of the trans flag

vegivamp,
@vegivamp@feddit.nl avatar

I think it also helps that it wasn't intentional. Nobody likes the obvious corp whoring for a quick cash grab.

csolisr,

I certainly see the blue, but where's the pink exactly? The mouth maybe? Feels like a bit of a stretch

fangleone2526,

they also make a pink one i think!

SoLongThx4TheFish,

I never noticed that its actually the flag colors! It's also available in every country with an Ikea, which is all of europe, north america, oceania and large parts of asia.

imaqtpie, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I like the idea but we are not ready at all for something like that. It'd be crazy to blow our load too early and draw a bunch of media attention here only for people to come here and find it unusable. If redditors are struggling this much to migrate, the general public has no chance.

See where we are at in 3-6 months and reassess.

Stanley_Pain,
@Stanley_Pain@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

2-3 years is probably a better timeframe.

chickengod,
@chickengod@lemmy.ml avatar

Makes more sense. Gotta mitigate the risk of ruining the UX of the site and the community. This is a good idea in general, though.

pingveno,

I can remember all too well how it went for the r/antiwork mod who was interviewed by Fox. Anything Lemmy does needs to be very deliberately planned by people who know what to say and not to say.

toDie4,

Any chance of a TLDR of this interview?

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

The interview itself is the best TLDR. It's 3 minutes 24 seconds of highly concentrated cringe.

Here it is.

Obi,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

TLDR: dog walker got walked all over on live TV, sub then pretty much died afaik.

SevFTW,

Bit of a longer TLDR including context, I'll call it a TLDDD (too long, didn't deep dive):

Doreen was a moderator of /r/antiwork, she went on Fox News to present the subreddit and why it was so interesting to so many. This wasn't agreed upon by the community or the other moderators.

Fox immediately tried to frame it as people just sucking off the teat of "corporate america" and not wanting to work. In reaction to this, Doreen failed to actually make any arguments that a Fox News viewer would understand and even played directly into the propagandist's hands by using out of context philosophies like "laziness is a virtue" and saying that she worked as a dog walker.

On top of this, Doreen was incredibly unpresentable in the video and looked like your average, basement-dwelling netizen, sitting in a dimly lit room with a 2010s webcam. For the right-wingers at fox, she was the perfect image of what they imagine leftists to be like:

  • Trans
  • Autistic
  • Socialist
  • Unkempt
  • No "real" job (dog walker)

Here's a screenshot from the interview to give you an idea of what I mean by unkempt and unpresentable

highduc,

I think the sub was just fine afterwards. Probably still is.

Not even walker. They just had to mind the dogs, but they got fired from that job because they were sleeping on the job, then were bewildered that they got fired.

Please delete this duplicate response, it's very long and makes it harder to scroll the thread/see my comment. I don't mean to be rude.

You don't need to be one of the 1st or 2nd level replies over here to avoid being buried.

SevFTW,

I deleted the other comment first, when I realized I didn't reply to the comment asking for more info, and then posted this. Perhaps something fucky with how lemmy served the page to you or deleted the post?

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh shit, my bad. I'm almost certain it's because we are on lemmy.ml, this server has been having issues. Sometimes my comments don't show up for hours.

Your other comment still appears for me now, undeleted with 3 upvotes. But if I go to feddit.de I can see it's been deleted.

I should have just let you handle it, woops.

I wonder if you can see my other comment on this thread where I uploaded the video itself? Maybe that hasn't loaded for everyone yet, although it was posted over an hour ago

ilickfrogs,
@ilickfrogs@lemmy.world avatar

I agree, I think following this initial burst of users and our feedback we'll get there with time.

malcriada_lala,

I agree, but it doesn't hurt to think this out for when the time comes.

rm_dash_r_star,
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

Think I'd have to agree with that, I don't think it's ready for an "event" at this point. It will be at some point, but not yet. Still something to think about.

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I love Lemmy, but I feel like people are overestimating the ability of the platform. Stability and usability issues aside, there's the question of why would John Oliver come here? We don't have any history of celebrity AMAs, and highest estimates of our userbase puts us at maybe 1% of reddit, or 1 million users. For comparison's sake Ashens has 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, do you think he could suddenly decide to do interviews and have the pull to get someone like John Oliver?

I think reaching out to Christian Selig or Louis Rossmann as other commenters suggested is more realistic, and would probably be a better experience for everyone involved.
