DarkThoughts, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

More the opposite. I can't stand all the noise. Especially during spring & summer when you have to open your window during the night.

LachlanUnchained,

Growing up, my bedroom faced a main road (even though it was a decent way aways), always want the bedroom window open. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

nom_nom, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

A few years ago I downloaded a browser extension to stop showing me recommended videos, both on the homepage and on the side of videos. I can only watch what I’m subscribed to and what I search for - you’d think its a big sacrifice because you can’t discover as many videos, but in reality I’ve gained so much more of my time back and control over what I actually want to watch.

ebits21, (edited ) in What password manager do you recommend?
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

There’s only two real choices imo.

Bitwarden or Keepass (KeePassXC for desktop, you’ll need one of many app choices for your phone).

Keepass you would sync to your own cloud provider and use a key file for protection.

Bitwarden is the obvious answer that fits all your criteria.

Rakn,

Why are these the only real choices? What makes the others not real?

ebits21,
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

Only ones I trust that are open sourced and have some kind of audit.

Rakn,

Don’t closed ones like 1Password also have audits? But I guess it’s a personal philosophy.

ebits21,
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

Sure. But I wouldn’t trust closed source software for passwords. Personal decision.

ChrislyBear,

What are thr benefits of KeePassXC over the regular “original” application?

ebits21, (edited )
@ebits21@lemmy.ca avatar

I use Linux and flatpaks so XC is the obvious choice for me - much nicer to use across platforms that aren’t a windows and only one available as a flatpak. Nicer interface. Supports TOTP codes (all I use it for, Bitwarden for passwords). More active development.

I use KeePassium on iOS with the same vault.

Wooly, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

Yes, but more so because of my tinitus. It fucking sucks, I can’t really focus on reading books because the silence is deafening.

Ricaz, in It would be nice if Lemmy had a "hide" option

It does. I used Connect and Voyager, and both have this feature.

Fthisguy, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

I’ll just say as a guy that does construction and remodeling, there is no better place to witness the butterfly effect than in a house with lazy framers. Any one of the contractors being lazy can often times be cause effects down the road .

MrShankles,

Would you like that square to the door, or square to the ceiling? You can’t have both

Barbacamanitu,

I’m also in the construction industry, and you’re so right. Good framing helps makes every step afterward go much more smoothly. Fixing bad framing with drywall mud and trim is hell.

NightOwl, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

iPad with the apple pencil. I use PDF Expert which is free and has no ads to write and highlight PDF files. Has a wireless transfer feature on local networks too so you can move files back and forth between the iPad and non Apple devices.

SoftMaterial3294,

I second this, personally I use Zotero for highlighting so I can sync it with Obsidian.

XiELEd, (edited ) in Posting: Hit and runs

If I’m posting a question, I simply won’t have anything better to say to someone who answered with more expertise than me 🤷‍♂️. If I say thanks to everyone just for the sake of it, I feel like I’m clogging up the comment section.

Railison, in Posting: Hit and runs

Sometimes it’s better to reply in comments to address specific questions, other times better to post an ETA. Sometimes, I just wanted to provoke discussion, or I’m about to do something that’ll leave me away for a couple of hours.

nekat_emanresu,

On principle, i’m replying to your comment as its first :P Edit: i came in here to do this, but i woulda responded either way lol

Im more talking after an hour, not a single comment or update from OP.

There definitely are good reasons to take time responding or not comment for ages etc of course. Some comments of course don’t need a response.

luthis, in What are the best fediverse alternatives to youtube?

I use Odysee, it has plenty of content. I’d like to hear what other people use as well.

That’s not federated though, just an alternative that uses LBRY

QuietStorm,
@QuietStorm@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

ive heard of that but i was not sure of it.

Fizz,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

I like odysee as well since its the only alternative that has lots of content. However the video performance sucks(I don’t blame them). I like that I can contribute to the network.

I wish odysee content was available on peertube. Because peertube performance is good and I’d have no problem Donating to my instance host.

luthis, in F*ck, Marry, Kill: Bread, Pasta, Rice.

Kill bread, fuck pasta, and marry rice.

That beautiful delicious rice. mmmmmm

SlicingBot,

Rice is the most perfect carb. There are so many variations.

ghostwolf, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?
@ghostwolf@lemmy.fakeplastictrees.ee avatar

During my time on reddit, I’ve learnt to appreciate downvotes. Silent feedback is much better than passive-aggressive replies that serve no purpose other than letting the person vent out.

Joe_0237,

idk, it sounds good, but to me its a lot like getting a grade with no comments (for the sake of example)

stealth_cookies,

Most of the time the downvotes I would get on Reddit are on topics where I disagreed with a couple of the early people and they downvoted. This would cause a cascade of people piling on. Other times I could make essentially the same comment and get lots of upvotes.

Not a big deal either way, it is boring to always be aligned with everyone else as long as you are open to constructive discussions about it.

Jellojiggle,

I got majorly downvoted once for sharing my opinion on not wanting to travel to a foreign country alone as a woman. A lot of flippant comments too. Like okay, this is not the sub for me. I still can’t believe I was attacked like I was.

j_roby, in My AR 15 wont cycle. Any ideas how to fix the issue?

You may want to ask this elsewhere

ImplyingImplications, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

metalurgy, machining, blacksmithing

That could be it. I don’t know YouTube’s algorithm, but typically they work by finding what other users watch the videos you watch and recommending you other videos those people also watched. I wouldn’t be surprised if the guys watching blacksmithing videos also tend to watch Joe Rogan and the like.

Lemmylefty,
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

I’d argue that gaming and memes are much bigger contributors.
