HomesliceAbe, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

I took an introduction to nursing class in high school where we had to know the names of all the bones, the chambers of the heart, CPR, etc. During one particular topic, one of the students kinda snapped and exclaimed “I’m too stupid for this!” The teacher, a badass ER nurse who was a single mom, rode a Harley, and had seen everything from electrocuted flesh to years-old bed sores, simply said “Good. That means you’re learning.”

I work with special needs kids, and whenever they complain about feeling stupid, I pass along that wisdom, but in a bit nicer way: “You’re not stupid, you’re just learning.”

Zarxrax, in What's the first dream you remember having?

So there used to be this cartoon called Silverhawks, which was about these dudes who are partially made of metal and they can fly.

First dream I can remember, I was at the doctor and they wanted to give me a shot in my leg. I was really afraid of needles at the time, but suddenly I became a Silverhawk. The nurse was trying to stick the needle in my thigh, but my thigh was metal, so her plan was foiled.

planish,

That’ll stop her for sure!

mavedustaine, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I honestly still do, though not on my phone.

And more often than not if I’m on my PC I’m working/gaming.

So really, I still go to reddit on my PC, but most of my usage used to be on the phone, now here I am on lemmy, on my phone, taking a shit.

In essence Lemmy has replaced Reddit for me where it really matters.

I, too, call upon lemmy now for the important tasks like shitting.

dotslashme, in How do other Europeans survive the raining season in Asia?

Used to live in Singapore and my recommendations are to use thin Uniqlo Airism tees or tank tops underneath your tee or shirt. Plan your routes so you know where to find aircon or fans, always walk slowly and make sure to hydrate. There are also body sheets that you can use to freshen up.

lemminer, in Okay, how do I block all this meme stuff?

Go through all tab, see what community posts are cringe and block them.

wtvr, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

From citizen Kane:

“It’s easy to make a lot of money, if all you want is a lot of money”

Or something to that effect. Think about that line often

TeaHands, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

The only times I’ve really been downvoting is if someone is giving out completely incorrect information, like in a support thread or something, and confusing matters. It’s not a personal judgement or anything, just trying to keep things clear for the person asking the question.

If I disagree with a comment, well no biggie. Sometimes it’s worth discussing like adults and sometimes it’s just a subjective opinion. If it’s offensive, I’ll report it and block the user.

makanimike, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

Ikigai

The cross-section of…

  • what you love
  • what you are good at
  • what the world needs
  • what you can be paid for.

In other words, the area where Mission, Passion, Profession, and Vocation overlap.
There is a book that was quite popular about it by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia. Might be worth looking into it.

But beyond that…it’s hard, bro! It’s not the romantic thing you want to hear at your age, but I think the amount of people who really achieve this ideal, and manage to build a life around a profession that gives you positivity in all dimensions, are rare. Most of us are content with something that does not have a negative impact on us and pays the bills. And the truth is, it almost surely changes over the course of your life.

Try out a lot of things. You will find things that you enjoy and that you are good at. Then continue in that direction.

Toocool,

And what’s worse ? It will most likely change overtime…

If you don’t know how to get started, try something you’re curious about, that will offer possibilities to learn and see how it goes, don’t worry about it and keep in mind that it might be that interest that leads you to other jobs later as long as you’re willing to learn and not stuck in a dead end job.

The life of a punctual man is a hell of undeserved loneliness

I read this in a book when I was 15 and I’ve never been on time since

dudebro,

“If you’re early you’re on time

If you’re on time you’re late

If you’re late you need to RUN”

My science teacher told us this in high school. Really stuck with me.

Marketsupreme,

Well by implication if you’re on time you need to run.

Mattador0808,

And if your early, youre late by extension. Just run everywhere, I guess

peter, in why does open source companies like canonical and opensuse don't host their own fediverse instances?
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Why would they?

“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” -Gandhi

TauriWarrior,

Except it doesn’t, “the eye for an eye” is a restriction on the amount of revenge.

“…a person who has injured another person is to be penalized to a similar degree by the injured party. In softer interpretations, it means the victim receives the [estimated] value of the injury in compensation. The intent behind the principle was to restrict compensation to the value of the loss.”

AlternateRoute, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

If you don’t hate Twitter, Reddit, Threads you must love them and are the enemy.

Lots of us vs them hate on this platform like many others. You arnt allowed to have a nuanced opinion or conversation about some things.

mojo, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?

Let me dress in cool trench coats without looking like some kind of creep. That and capes too.

brunofin,

I want to wear capes too

JasSmith, in Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

I stay away from the politics related communities. A bunch of people from r/Politics migrated to Lemmy and I’ve received death threats for having the wrong political opinions.
