XTornado, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Every year no… Every two maybe, most stop receiving updates after the 2 years, except for some brands and maybe top models…

Nowadays it’s slightly better as usually there is a couple more years of security updates but that’s it.

Of course if there is scene and you can get some custom ROM like lineage or similar it is slightly better… But honestly most phones nowadays are locked down.

I enjoy it in that I find it helps me disconnect from work. Not even consciously, I just find after running for 40 minutes any lingering mental hangover from my office job are gone. It’s similar to what happens when doing volunteering or community work.

Lifting: I definitely don’t like while I’m doing it.

Riding my bike though: it’s great to get out there early in the morning and explore, see nature, etc. with the bike, I also just like the feeling of speed, so the physical act of riding can actually be enjoyable.

To a lesser degree, the same can apply to running. I find that when I’ve been in better shape, I could experience that runner’s high.

blameitonjorge, nexpo, night mind I've found work great as they talk in a very mellow manner. As long as you're ok falling asleep to the type of stuff they talk about lol

Bitwarden, no question

Bitwarden. Definitely recommended.

Mechanize, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

If silence is the real culprit you should try out a white noise generator, generally speaking it should overload/excite you less then music or human voices and could help you sleep faster.

Where I live silence during the night is not really an option, and I had had problems only when on vacation “away from civilization”, but small stuff like white noise, a fan or similar low but continuos sounds helped me out without asking for my attention (which happens with movies, music or similar).

There are even apps that simulate different kind of sound and let you mix them (like rain, birds, wind) but I didn’t have enough patience to really dig on this solution.

LachlanUnchained,

I think it’s more getting out of my own thoughts. And I feel white noise etc won’t shift my focus from that.

I find it helpful to listen to .mp3s of people talking about something I’m interested in. I can focus on that and drift off to sleep and wake up not even realising I fell asleep. Also, I’ve found a hindu mantra that helps sometimes. It’s so hypnotic, it just carries me into the navel of sleep.

Bitwarden. Either selfhosted or the official

fiat_lux, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

The noise in my head is plenty loud already.

WaDef7, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

Many people here are talking about buying an iPad and the pencil, but if all you're doing is reading papers I think this is a massive overspend. There are many inexpensive android tablets that come with pencils plenty good enough for handwriting or non-artistic drawing.

Of course, you say you have a job so you're likely not to need to buy the cheapest thing possible (even if you don't, you're not forced to buy an iPad, Samsung's tablet software is quite good), but I don't want someone with the same use case, who might just be a student, to get the impression they need to spend a grand to read pdfs.

japps13, in What password manager do you recommend?

I like the Password for Nextcloud app. I self-host mine, but I think there might be Nextcloud instances that you can access. It is encrypted, and has an app for smartphones.

Radicalized, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yeah, but no.

I’ve been lifting weights daily since I was 15, and I’m 33 now. I enjoy it in that it makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something more than I would be if I just sat on my ass at home. It feels good to push yourself physically and ‘feel the burn’ and work up a sweat. Humans were meant to use their bodies and if you don’t there’s a very good chance that that is the reason you feel like shit all the time.

But also no because I find weight training to be exceptionally boring. This is easily mitigated though because once you have the flow of your workout solidly built into your head, it’s simple enough that you can turn your brain off and focus on the podcast you’re listening to. 30-50 minutes will pass by in a flash.

I still have days where I dread my workout, and I have to really push myself to complete them. Generally, if I go straight home from work and sit on my couch, I will not get back up.

soyagi, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes, I feel pleasure when lifting weights. It’s good to feel powerful, and it’s good to feel like I’m getting stronger. I also get pleasure from knowing I can do it and that I’m dedicated and can keep up the routine. So I suppose it’s mostly mental pleasure, but physically having that feeling of power is great at the very least.

Gormadt, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?
@Gormadt@lemmy.ml avatar

It has to be ran with a smaller image to play but I loved it.
