Mastersord, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

The karma/upvote/downvote system encourages engagement and gives users an idea of how others perceive their posts. It also encourages people to think about their posts and it helps keep garbage from clogging up the feed.

The problem is that posts are now “attention-centric” and that might lead to people posting stuff that’s more controversial or even “rage-bait” because it gets a reaction.

But honestly though, the toxicity was always there. It’s just that now people express it with an arrow click instead of a flame post calling out the OP’s mom.

I think anonymity or at least the perception of it on the internet breeds toxicity because it’s easier to hurt someone when neither party has to look each other in the eye.

The_HKP, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

I was a SysAdmin/Tech Support for 15+ years and also super burned out. I moved into Analytics, specifically using visualization software (Tableau) with SQL, and I could not be happier with it. The stakes are so much lower, and therefore, so is the stress. I feel that it's just technical enough to scratch that itch, but not so much that I end up just doing tech support again. Nobody needs a pie chart at 3 fucking am like they needed with server reboots.

With your background in tech, any viz software should be relatively easy for you to pick up. I was able to get into a free program in my area that trained for Analytics, so I'm not sure what may or may be available to you in your area. But at the very least, there should be plenty of stuff online for learning Tableau and SQL for free if that interests you.

That’s really good that you were able to get out. I guess I could consider Tableau and SQL but I literally have zero passion or interest in it/for it. If I am going to make a change, this time it both has to make monetary sense and has to be something that I don’t hate every waking minute of.

perishthethought, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

Hey person, I was in tech support for about 6 different companies, over 8 years. I left that to become a consultant. Best move, for me. It’s a lot like TS but you earn more and make money for the company, instead of being a cost center.

I taught myself some coding before I got my first job. JS and web technologies in my case. If you’ve been successful in TS for years, you could do this next.

bouncingbollocks, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

It’s not fun, I do it cause it gives me euphoric feelings similar to opiates and it makes my brain shut up for a few hours. Plus I sleep like a champ after a good workout

tikitaki, in How safe is it to eat raw eggs?

The risk is fairly small. Like, considerably smaller than eating a street hot dog. But if you’re still worried about salmonella, you can pasteurise the eggs at home, it’s really annoying (the egg is safe at 59°C, but it starts cooking at 65°C, so the temp margin is fairly small).

If willing to do it, you’ll need a large pot, a thermometer, and ideally a thermal bag.

  1. Fill the pot with water. Heat it until the water goes beyond 59°C. Around 70°C should be fine.
  2. Transfer the pot with water to the thermal bag. Let it cool back until the water is around 62°C. (Overheating it and letting it cool is a bit more foolproof than trying to reach the exact temperature right off the bat.)
  3. Place the eggs in the water. Close the pot and the thermal bag. Forget about it for 15min.

Using a larger pot is recommended because more water = more thermal mass = more constant temperature.

Quem vive com medo de tudo não vive, cara

Tá coçando pra tentar algo, então bota pra quebrar, não fica nessa enrolação

Tenho certeza que você não fica pensando no risco toda vez que entra num carro; apenas o risco de se machucar é bem maior

bazsy, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Open fakeupdate.net put it in full screen (F11) and watch them debating how much of their work was unsawed.

CanadaPlus, (edited ) in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

Hottest: +40C

Coldest: -40C

I think that’s exactly it, which is nice and round. The 40 above was in the US, the 40 below was the coldest it’s ever been at night here. Without windchill, mind you. Windchill is cheating. With windchill it can get close to -100C on those same days.

Goat farming

ScotinDub, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

I used to get reasonable content as per my interests. Now after having a kid its just baby songs and bluey. I use smarttubenext on a firestick so at least I don’t get ads but it’s not great.

minorsecond, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

You just gave me an awesome prank to pull on my wife. Thanks!

TheL321, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Many people upgrade every year because of perceived obsolescence.

makanimike, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

I have been in high -30Cs (or is it more correct so say low in this case?) in Lapland. I guess it was around -36 or -37?
I have also been in high 40s (46 or 47) in the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, which also happens to be one of the lowest points on land on the planet. But we also hiked to the edge of a volcano and hot springs. I think it may have been even hotter there? but that would probably be cheating.

Gatsby, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

I slept in a tent in 2°F(-16.6°C) weather, I’ve probably been in slightly colder but not while sleeping.

Hottest was 117°F(47.2°C, last year in my home town it was +110°F for over two weeks straight.

maynarkh, in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?

They would have real tangible value and became an asset subject to speculation and manipulation like crypto.

I’d rather hang upside down under water and smack my face with fast moving rocks than work out in a gym

Cuz I kinda do that
