InternetPirate, in What Will Be the Singularity Endgame: Utopia, Dystopia, Collapse, or Extinction? Why?

As Connor Leahy says, companies are stuck in a race to the bottom where the only thing that matters is being the first to achieve AGI, even at the expense of security. I believe that unless things change significantly, we are heading towards extinction. We might create a very powerful AGI that simply doesn’t care about us and ends up destroying us. This wouldn’t be because the AGI is inherently evil, but simply because we would be in its way, much like how humans wouldn’t care about ants when building a road. I wish more people were discussing this issue because in a few years, it might be too late.

Jay_RnR, in What are some reddit communities you wish to see live and more active on lemmy?

I fail to comprehend why there’s no community dedicated to “Rock” music. This network, after all, was named after one of the most iconic rock stars of our era…

quinten, in Will there be a way to migrate your account to another instance?
@quinten@lemmy.world avatar

See the Lemmy blog:

At the same time, we are seeing lots of requests to implement major new features, such as migration between instances, or combining similar communities. As described above, we are completely overloaded with work, and definitely won’t have time to implement these in the near future. If there is a feature you want to see implemented, you will likely need to work on it yourself, or find someone who can.

linucs,

God I love FOSS, I contributed with a very tiny feature but it made me feel so good knowing I contributed to a beautiful, community owned, project

nonearther, in What are some reddit communities you wish to see live and more active on lemmy?

LinkedinLunatics, IAmTheMainCharacter for time wasting

Jobs, UKJobs for job search

Recrutinghell to know I’m not the only one in the hellhole

Soccer (activities are non existent here), BoxOffice, Entertainment, etc. for fun

nightscout, in What are some reddit communities you wish to see live and more active on lemmy?
@nightscout@lemmy.world avatar

Health-related communities, particularly those for specific medical conditions. Those are the communities that really become a lifeline for people, help them through diagnoses or just difficult times, and can serve as an excellent resource. I was active on r/diabetes_t1 on Reddit and am trying to get a community started here on Lenny.world (!T1diabetes).

kalibri, in Which lemmy clients do you recommend for Android?

Connect, Thunder, Jerboa are pretty good.

I like to have swipes for upvote/downvote and tap to hide comments, so not big into clients that don’t have those features.

binchicken, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?
@binchicken@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m on lemmy.sdf.org because it’s widely federated and run by a trustworthy organization.

I’m not much of a tech bro - in fact I struggle with troubleshooting basic Linux issues. That’s why I mostly interact outside of my local instance.

I hardly engage with the techy discussion on SDF, but I appreciate the high quality user base.

GenderNeutralBro,

I’m also on SDF. They’ve been in the business of offering free computing resources to the public since the 80s. So I feel confident that they won’t close up shop due to lack of expertise or resources.

@lackthought@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I was going to come in here and praise SDF but I see I’m too late

Damn you Dark Souls Remastered for taking me away from Lemmy for a bit!

I guess I’ll link the FAQ for SDF here for anyone interested in learning more

and also mention that SDF runs a Mastodon and Pixelfed instance for all your federation needs

mnrockclimber,

I’m also late to the party. But I’ve been on SDF for ages so I always try out everything they offer.

federalreverse, in Easier-to-Pronounce Variants of the Name Vitalii
@federalreverse@feddit.de avatar

I would definitely suggest losing the second i at the end, that looks weird. Or maybe go for "Vitaly" (which you can tell people spells like V + Italy).

(Incidentally, a couple years back, I had email contact with someone named "Vitalis", which I thought sounded like a female and vaguely flower-y name. Only when we finally met in person did I notice he was male. Somehow he didn't seem too irritated by me having misgendered him in multiple emails though.)

Jourei, in Do you guys think this is the start of something bigger?
@Jourei@lemmy.world avatar

I am cautiously hopeful that fedi will become significant in a while.

shreddy_scientist, in Now that Lemmy is growing an important question needs to be answered: what should we use as our equivalent for "the narwhal bacons at midnight?"
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

“The counterculture can’t count.”

lordcommander, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?

Lemmy.world because lemmy.ML recommended it when I tried to sign up there. I’m considering moving to a smaller server though since this one seems to be getting overloaded.

Tankyiu, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

What a time to be alive!
