lath, (edited ) in Do you interact more in Lemmy?

I try not to. This place bans you for “not being nice”, which is an arbitrary metric that changes from mod to mod and let’s all be honest, being nice is exhausting. Ask anyone working in retail.

The comments here are correct though. As long as you focus on your niche and it’s relatively active, then stay away from propaganda media, Lemmy can be an useful place. The default All is worthless in anything but lurking and you need to find the communities about your interests or make them yourself if they don’t exist here yet.

Edit: That was close! I almost commented on some dumb take in a doubly dangerous post that involved both current wars. That’s a definite no-no. Just don’t get involved, it’s not worth the trouble.

KeenFlame,

Reddit bans for not being nice, Facebook, hell even 4chan does. What are you looking for, a place where people can be assholes and “correct”? You don’t want that at all

lath, (edited )

Well, this ain’t any of those sites. Why would anyone want it to be. Also, your imagination of what i want and my imagination of what i want are likely very different imaginations. So let’s not imagine either of us is “correct” while the loser by popular vote gets banned in the process.

spookedbyroaches,

I’m pretty abrasive but nothing happened to me IDK what you’re talking about

lath,

Yes, well, you have your experience and i have mine, else we would not be here, would we?

Spzi,

This place bans you for “not being nice”, which is an arbitrary metric that changes from mod to mod and let’s all be honest, being nice is exhausting.

Lemmy is many places (individual instances with individual moderation policies). If it’s important to you, you can find a server which matches your expectations, or host your own.

lath,

Even though i used different words, i believe i said pretty much the same thing in the part of my post you’re not quoting. Or perhaps we’ve been taught different kinds of English. Might explain the lack of understanding around here.

Ah, my mistake. I wrote communities, you wrote instances. Yes, the difference is immesureable. My apologies.

Spzi,

I don’t think we were talking about the same thing. You’re talking about restricting your behaviour, “focus on your niche”, “stay away from propaganda media”. My proposal was to use an instance which makes it unecessary for you to restrict yourself to certain areas, if their moderation policy aligns with your default behaviour.

Of course it ultimately comes down to similar things, since instances which do not care wether you’re nice aren’t allowed in all places which require you to be nice. The key difference is still that you don’t have to be wary yourself. It sounded as if you would not like that.

lath,

Yes, we might be talking in parallel. It’s true i might be on the wrong side of the fence since i expect that even the hateful deserve their chance to speak, at least until they become irremediable. And i do disagree with this safe space isolative behaviour. Perhaps you are correct and i should instead visit those, and i’m paraphrasing, ‘bigotry-infested phobic hellholes’ for a while and see what’s what.

Thank you.

afraid_of_zombies, in Who do actually benefit from "As an AI language model.."? I see it only bugs everyone

I have been using it in all sorts of places. The past month:

My kids have a math test coming up. Hey AI generate a list of math problems for the common core unit x for grade level y.

I need some text translated better than Google translate does.

A customer spec is calling for a part that has this old timey word describing it that regular searching online failed at finding.

Here is a document, summarize it please.

I need a recipe to make x.

Hey, this PLC programming software has a option greyed out that I need. Any idea why?

I am high as a kite recommended me a TV show.

This bottle of wine was pretty good. Given that I liked it can you list five others that I might like?

So far my favorite thing I have done with it was produce actual statistical data to argue a point I was making about a book of the Bible.

afraid_of_zombies, in What's with the hype for The Godfather?

Don’t get it either. It is such a flawed product.

A. Crime movies are supposed to have everyone die at the end. The godfather dies a successful old man playing with his grandchild.

B. Holy shit is it long

C. It feels like it demands to be appreciated. Every scene we are being told that we have to appreciate every scene.

afraid_of_zombies, in Do you think Calvin and Suzie got married when they grew up?

Most people don’t retain friends as they move from one stage of life to another. So no.

afraid_of_zombies, in What's the best response to someone who believes in hard determinism but also uses this to deny responsibility for any immoral actions they commit?

There is a difference between free will and agency. I don’t think humans have free will, that requires the supernatural to be a thing and I don’t see evidence of that. Agency clearly does exist or else you would have to maintain that a billionaire and a slave have as much control over their life. Your friend is confusing the two.

afraid_of_zombies, in Would you say enthusiast grade or business grade products are better quality?

No question when it comes to factory production. Design it right and maintain it that system will be producing widgets long after you and your children have died of old age. I have worked on retrofits and repairs of machines from pre-ww2. Have coworkers who have worked on machines from the 19th century.

You can’t compare one of those beasts to something for the home hobbyists.

ComplexLotus, in How long would you live if electricity for the whole world went out permanently?

Solar pannels and wind farms will continue working, so the grid may fail, but there will remain many small islands where electricity keeps working ig

I have been using Connect. It works well

Da_Boom, in How long would you live if electricity for the whole world went out permanently?
@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Honestly, I wonder if it would make me live longer. Sometimes it takes a literal crisis to get me out of my chair.

Sure the collapse of society will possibly happen. But that means all polluting systems would inevitably shut down. And at that point you have to get creative. While I don’t live on a farm, it wouldn’t take much to rob a store for seeds and food with the security systems down. And guns are few and far between here in aus.

straypet,

Get some seeds, press the button on the packet and after a bit out comes the food, right?

Farming is hard and electricity plays a huge part in how it’s currently done.

Da_Boom,
@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yes, but I’m not planning on doing full on farming… rather a small set of crops I can manage on my own with gardening implements and my own bare hands. Times will be lean, and I’d have to ration what I have, and there’s always the chance that a bad harvest could cause me to catch my death, but trying anything you can is the aim.

Maybe setting some bird traps or something is a good idea, it’s worth a shot.

Basically to only grow as much as I need to survive. Might even fill tanks with the water to keep a surplus in case the water system loses pressure and water dries out. I have a set of gas stoves and dad loves his barbecues, so we can cook on propane, charcoal and we can even use the wood for our fireplace, and we could chop trees down in the park near my house for more wood heck our Falcon wagon runs on LPG, so we can use that in our barbecues as well if we can manage to adapt the nozzle on the filler cap.

It won’t last forever, but the whole point of doing it is to give yourself enough time to come up with a plan and improve your issues over time.

Even with the power gone I still live in a city. And I guarantee the roads will be blocked with cars as more and more run out of petrol. Unless you can get out as quick as possible and can get fuel before the fuel stations run out of juice to pump the stuff, you aren’t going to get far. So you might be better off staying put and only going short distances to conserve your fuel.

Of could if the outage is the result of EMP your modern car’s electrics could be fried anyway. Unless you can find spare working parts to fix your ECUs and other computers or to manage to adapt your car to magnetos and carburettors, you won’t be going anywhere anyway. Honestly the only thing that might still be working is my dad’s Moto Guzzi. Just put the original ignition back on to it if the upgraded electronic ignition is fried and it will run, may have to push start it, but it will., and you can weave in and out of roadblocks with it, and all our other cars and our lawnmower can contribute their fuel via a siphon.

Wrong community.

But to answer, it's a different frontend for Lemmy. There's the default, Alexendrite, Photon, mlmym.

Different apps, same way to browse lemmy.

enragedzeus05, in Does noone train their dogs anymore?

I will never have a dog that isn’t professionally trained.

some_guy, in Does noone train their dogs anymore?

I saw a ton of well-behaved pups on a hiking trail this morning. Of those that were off-leash, all were respectful of strangers. Not one misbehaved. Some were on leashes. I assume that some of those could be off-leash without incident. Not one dog behaved poorly.

This is not to say that there aren’t a ton of dumbasses who raise their dogs to have no boundaries. Just shining a light on a bunch of responsible dog-people who were doing a great job.
