Not an answer but your question reminded me of Netflix back in 2008-09 or so had an awesome feature on the Xbox where you could do just this. Your avatar guys would sit at the bottom of the screen like you were in a movie theater and you could chat while you all watched the same movie. It certainly was more novel than anything else but seems like it would scratch the exact itch you’re looking for.
