can i get the meme template?

ArcaneGadget,

Just download the image, put it into Paint, select the right half with the selection tool and press delete. Hey presto!

olutukko,

You mean gimp right? Pretty risky move to mention paint in linux memes

ArcaneGadget,

Huh. Good point. Paint is so ambiguous to me that I didn’t even think about that. Kinda plays into the meme as well, funnily enough.

Bondrewd, in It's the beer, I knew it!

Swedish*

FiskFisk33, (edited )

He was born in Helsinki. He is “Finlandssvensk” which doesn’t have a good translation in English, which is not the same thing as Swedish.

hemko,

I guess it’s Swedish-Finnish in English, if you apply the same logic as with African-American and other similar terma

ExLisper,

Oh my, now they are trying to Marie Curie Linus Torvalds.

Bondrewd,

??

ExLisper, (edited )

Marie Curie was Polish but the French pretty much convinced the whole world she was French.

Bondrewd,

Good thing Linus is Swedish. If you knew history and read the wiki, you would know about swedish rule of Finland and that a numerable swedish minority stayed in Finland over the centuries.

Since his father is in the “Swedish Peoples Party”, I will assume Finns casually use Swedish as a denomination for people who live in Finland but speak Swedish. I think he also talked about speaking Swedish at his home with his family.

Wow, lemmy goes to new lows every day. I cant understand why I have to feed this to you…

ExLisper,

You’re understanding of the concept of nationality seems very basic. There are many different minorities in different countries and sometimes they will identify solely as citizens of this minorities (like Russians in Latvia for example), sometimes they will identify as citizens of the country in which they were born and raised (like some minorities in USA) and sometimes both (like other minorities in USA). The fact that Linus speaks Swedish doesn’t mean anything and he doesn’t even hold Swedish citizenship AFAIK. He holds Finnish and American citizenships so unless you can show me his statements claiming he’s Swedish your arguments here are pointless.

TheyCallMeHacked,

Well then he’s neither: he’s American. He lives in Dunthorpe, Oregon and has been naturalised American. That’s all beyond the point: what people mean isn’t his official citizenship, but his ethnicity, his cultural background. And in that regard, he’s Swedish.

ExLisper, (edited )

It’s not for you to decide based on arbitrarily chosen data points. If Linus says he’s Finnish (another commenter said he does) then that’s it. Also, think how strange it is to insist that someone has one ethnicity or another. Categorizing people like that based on their genes or language is sooo previous century. Time to move on my friend, time to move on.

CbtB,

I’ve met him. He says he’s Finnish. He was born in Finland and attended school in Finland. He graduated from the University of Helsinki. He has since moved to the United States of America. So he’s a little bit American now.

ExLisper,

Yep, typical Marie Curie intent. I guess Swedes don’t have enough famous people.

hemko,

Well they have their famous king, Kalle Kaviar or something

FiskFisk33, (edited )

the knig <3

CbtB,

He says he’s a Finn. He was born in Finland. He lived in Finland until he emigrated to the USA.

Then you say he’s actually Swedish because he knows the language, his dad was from Sweden, and “Marie Curie”. Bizarre.

ExLisper,

What? You’re confused. I’m saying he’s a Finn. The other guy says he’s Swedish.

Onlytanner,

He speaks Swedish but otherwise is definitely a Finn.

Why not? Maybe I’m using a niche architecture which doesn’t gets built by default. Or maybe I don’t use glibc.

Lake Oswego, Oregon got absolutely slapped by the weather

MechanicalJester,

The urban residents don’t have any electric backup. The wealthy do, but if you live in the Portland Metro area, don’t have natural gas heat, and the power goes out? Fairly fucked.

I live rurally and we got super super lucky to not lose power, but we were going to be fine if we did.

This is the coldest it’s been here ina long long time. Other parts of the country would mock the severity, but this kind of weather is rare here.

Portland Gas Electric raised residential rates 17% for 2024. Thankfully all that extra revenue is going towards making the grid far more reliable /S

Montagge,
@Montagge@kbin.earth avatar

I place I use to rent was somewhat rural and had electric heat. After spending a snow storm where the inside of the house was below freezing I added a wood stove to the list of requirements to the next place I live lol

MechanicalJester,

I replaced the small wood stove with a king sized stove. If you can spare the space a bigger wood box is fantastic. If you live with mixed, rarely artic, then I recommend the Blaze King. The catalytic burn and the thermostat are great.
If you deal with artic weather then I think Quadrafire might be the way to go. The fire has stayed smouldering for days. Very little smoke, mostly steam seen when the catalytic burner is going.

One negative comment on the Blaze King is that if you have the thermostat on max high, and get a roaring fire going before you turn the thermostat down, the draw can force the intake to stay open. I would add a butterfly valve to the intake or a damper on the exhaust if I did it again. When I need to redo the chimney next I will do both, with maybe a remote little helper fan to assist with getting the fire started.

I did that once and just chucked a pot of water into the firebox to cool it down. I had so much fuel in there letting it cook off would have been ridiculous but probably not dangerous. Probably.

If it’s more just for emergencies and power outages then I would say a little battery Bank and a pellet stove would be the way to go

Montagge,
@Montagge@kbin.earth avatar

I live in a manufactured home so that gets its own set of rules of what I can install in it. Luckily the one I have, which I forget the brand of,has a fire brick baffle to reflect lots of heat out instead of up. I can get this house 85F without meaning to lol

Murdoc,

I can see a woman holding an airplane made of cheese, full of passengers that are hungry and listening to a Belgian radio show about 3 veggieburgers that fight crime in the back alleyways of Rivendell. One of them is married to an oviraptor named Steve who just graduated from Bovine University with a 6.0 GPA majoring in Advanced Yelling, and with aspirations of one day becoming a comma.

Avoid Lenovo. At least, I have not had great experiences with the ThinkPad T14s AMD, both gen 1 and gen 2.

Gen 2 came with an Aetheros (sp?) bt/wifi card that would never wake up after suspend, had to get an Intel replacement, thankfully the bad one wasn’t soldered in and I could replace it.

Trackpad has glitches that had to be mitigated in the kernel - mitigated well enough that it doesn’t bother me but it’s still silly

And both gen 1 and 2 still cannot reliably wake from suspend, and experience unreasonably high battery drain while suspended

Then again that could be a problem with all modern laptops…

8tomat8,

I’ve never had better experience with Linux than on ThinkPad. It made me love distro hoping again.

caseyweederman,

I’m a fan of the old IBM ThinkPads. Not sure about the recent ones.
I’ve had huge problems with one of Lenovo’s Legion laptops. Awful support too, they did everything they could to not have to fix it. It took a licensed third party to finally take us seriously and fix the dang thing.

So I wouldn’t recommend Lenovo unless the only alternative was Dell.

Hellstormy,
@Hellstormy@lemmy.world avatar

I run Kubuntu on a T15 Gen 1 for work and it works really well.

nxdefiant, (edited )

I’ve run Linux on the T410, T520, P50, P51, X1g2, X1g5, X1 Yoga, and p16s, all when those laptops were new. Sometimes the wifi was hard to configure, or the fingerprint scanner didn’t work, or the wwan card wasn’t supported, or the power states where fucky and drained the battery, but that was in it’s way all part of the fun.

It’s definitely gotten easier over time to run Linux on new hardware and I’ll pick a Thinkpad for the job every time. I use a modern Thinkpad with linux for work every day.

drdnl,

I have had a couple T14s without issue, did you remember to change the suspend mode in the bios to Linux?
