sbv, in I never learn my lesson

On Reddit I just read without logging in. It was nice. I’m trying to help build communities on Lemmy, so I’m posting and commenting.

Since doing that, I’ve been told I’m enjoying my hobby wrong, that my friends enjoy their hobby wrong, the links I researched for a comment thread are wrong (without references to correct info), and that I’m probably wrong about how I want to live.

I know I should have thicker skin, but the slow drip of unfriendliness is alienating.

big_slap,

I wanted to just upvote this and move on, but I feel like that would be a disservice to you because I feel the same way about commenting.

I would say to just ignore the negative comments and continue to post. good people should not tear each other down like you describe. you never truly know who is replying to you, it could be a kid or someone that has some issues that need to be addressed.

I understand its much easier said than done, but training yourself to have thicker skin is like a muscle, just gotta keep going out there and train it lol. good luck!

sbv,

Thanks. I’ve been blocking unfriendly posters. That’s working pretty well.

Speculater,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

You’re not blocking them correctly then, because you’re doing your hobby wrong. /s

PS: Good people don’t criticize others like you’re describing. You’re doing the right thing by shrinking their reach into a list of blocked users.

thanks_shakey_snake,

Have you had positive experiences too, or are they primarily negative?

sbv,

I’ve had positive experiences, mostly in the shit-posting and meme communities.

Maybe it’s just me, but the negative experiences are way more memorable than the positive ones.

EmergMemeHologram,

They always are.

People need to adhere to “if you have nothing nice to say, it’s better to say nothing at all” if we want Lenny to succeed.

I wish I was better at my hobbies (I plan to invest more in them next year) so I could submit more content and help get communities rolling. I see you have posted a fair few things which I appreciate.

thanks_shakey_snake,

Yeah, I definitely feel that way. Positive experiences just feel ambient, and negative experiences feel like distinct events.

Still, I have the sense that Lemmy is mostly positive, even though there are jerks. I have alot of comments with, like… 7 upvotes and 1 downvote, and of course the downvote sticks out in my mind… But then again, way more people were supportive than negative, and that’s kinda cool.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s just how “real” fans are.

There’s nothing real about them though, except their malice.

I am the kind of guy who will make fun of you for watching and enjoying the first few seasons of Disco and Picard because I think they suck, but I’ve stopped trying to tell people how to enjoy their media. The world is already a miserable enough place without trying to make people feel bad about their content watching habits.

EmergMemeHologram,

If you come to !Risa you can join us in lampooning then, which makes them much more fun to watch.

sbv,

Risa is a great community. I don’t post there, but I enjoy the memes.

sbv,

The world is already a miserable enough place without trying to make people feel bad about their content watching habits.

Exactly this.

I am the kind of guy who will make fun of you for watching and enjoying the first few seasons of Disco and Picard because I think they suck

If someone can be friendly while they’re joking around like that, I’m all for it. But it’s hard to get that subtlety into a comment.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

There’s kind of two modes with that. If you’re in a bad mood it’s easy to just become a bulldozer of anger and malice and just shit on every single aspect of the first seasons. Otherwise, it’s just a discussion where we disagree on what things we enjoy.

I find it easier to have a simple discussion here on Lemmy. On reddit you’re about 50/50 going to encounter somebody angry and malicious, but here it’s probably more like 70/30 towards a good conversation.

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT,

… If you’re in a bad mood it’s easy to just become a bulldozer of anger and malice and just shit on every single aspect …

This is a part of speaking with people online that I think a lot of us miss. Sometimes we’re just cranky and not thinking at our best and sometimes it’s the other person. But we too often assume we’re dealing with the essential person

theneverfox,
@theneverfox@pawb.social avatar

At the same time, Picard mostly sucked… But it was good enough for me to watch through

I feel like half the problem is that not all of us are on the same page. If I say “I think this sucked”, I want to talk about it, and if anything I hope someone will recontextualize it for me and make it more enjoyable.

I want to hash it out, because anyone who does that in good faith sharpens their own opinion. Maybe I’m wrong and they convince me to give it a second chance, maybe I’m wrong and realize I only liked it for nostalgia. Or maybe we realize our opinions differ, and narrow down the reason why

I don’t think I’d like Picard aside from nostalgia…I don’t think it was fun or artistically valuable, but I didn’t stop watching. I don’t think it’s good-If you like it, I’m not going to say you’re wrong, but I will argue no one should watch it if they don’t love Patrick Stuart already. Not even TNG, the rest of the crew was pretty hollow cameos - his character was badly written, but I watched it through because it was more of his character

Xer0,

Tell them to fuck off. This is the internet. Don’t let people do this to you.

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT,

I think you’re using lemmy wrong if you’re encountering that much resistance. /s

But seriously what is this hobby that’s so dividing? Are you looking through telescopes backwards or something?

sbv,

It’s D&D. A game played with friends who have their own likes and dislikes. But sometimes they like the wrong thing.

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT,

Haha is this the classic minmaxer vs storyteller divide? Or maybe the serious campaign is being ruined by murderhobos?

There’s got to be infinite ways to enjoy d&d and so infinite disagreements to be had.

TranscendentalEmpire,

The OKC deal is actually a pretty square deal. The team is putting up 50m and the city is putting up another 70m, but the city retains ownership and use over the property. The funding is also coming from extending a 1% sales tax weve already been paying for the last 5 years.

It’s not what I would prioritize, but at least we’re actually going to keep the infrastructure we’re paying for.

The Metal Gear Solid fanbase is probably the one of the few respectful and wholesome gaming fanbase I have seen. While most male gamers are drooling and oogling their eyes on any sexualised female characters, MGS fans question and reject the scantily clad female character in Metal Gear Solid V and always meme about this woman being fully clothed.

Keep classy MGS fans!

I have a motorcycle. It’s a Harley-Davidson. Immediately, everyone is picturing a large and unpleasant looking bearded man riding a huge, noisy, vibrating, chrome bedazzled air cooled motorcycle without a helmet from one bar to the next.

My harley makes about as much noise as a Toyota Camry. I wear full protective gear when riding it, including a bright and attention-getting helmet. It doesn’t get ridden to bars, because drinking interferes with my motorcycle addiction.

The large and unpleasant looking bearded man part is accurate, though.

Team owners: “We’re just humble billionaires and we care so much about your state. The team is part of the community… Now subsidize our massively profitable business or we’ll move the team.”

I’ll never understand why fans are die hard loyal to franchises that screw them at every possible opportunity. Insane ticket prices, seat license fees (which are somehow different than tickets?), insane concession prices, ads on everything- it hurts my brain.

bobs_monkey, (edited )

I’ll never understand why fans are die hard loyal to franchises that screw them at every possible opportunity.

Because for many people it is a core part of their identity, without which they wouldn’t have much outside of work and sleep

AlternatePersonMan,

Seems crazy. I think professional sports would be so much cooler if the community had stake in the team and got something out of winning/profits.

It’s just so weird to attach your identity to a team that you are in no way a part of, other than the location.

ILikeBoobies,

The Euro Leagues system

Your local team gets good enough that you have a team then there are stakes

NA leagues don’t do this because they are entertainment not competitive products

AlternatePersonMan,

I’m not a huge football/soccer fan, but I love the concept of promotion/relegation. Around here if you have a losing team you get rewarded with a high draft pick. It’s a strategy to be terrible.

I also would love having lower level teams to watch, but that’s pretty rare. If you have a pro team in your city, you probably don’t have a semi pro team with the exception of baseball.

Maybe that’s why so many people enjoy watching college sports. Although I have my own issues with that scene, because of course I do.

can,

everything would be so much cooler with that.

doublejay1999,
@doublejay1999@lemmy.world avatar

What’s the state of community sport in the US ?

In the UK we have the same mindless billions in Soccer, but there is still (just about) a good level of community sport, like semi pro and below, where you can watch for almost nothing then go the bar after the match and drink with the players.

You don’t get the same athleticism and artistry (from overtrained genetic freaks) But you still get brilliant entertainment, drama, fun moments with your tribe. Etc.

Community sports is where it’s at.

dumpsterlid, (edited )

I mean I think most people are aware of how abusive the relationship is at some level (conscious or not) but ultimately the reason billionaires buy teams like this is if you truly love sports what are you by going to do?

I think the only correct perspective to view this from is that it is a tragedy that something so incredibly important to people that it might as well be a religion, is utterly controlled by the billionaire class. I couldn’t care less for professional sports in most ways and find it annoying that stadiums get so much subsidies from cities but at the end of the day I have no interest in bashing people’s rabid love of a sport. I think it is great, go wild and be totally obsessed with your sports team, it is an utterly benign love at the heart of it.

hexual,
@hexual@lemmy.world avatar

Nailed it. This is especially true with football in the UK. People are literally born and brought up with the expectation of supporting a certain team.

MedicPigBabySaver,

For the record, N.E. Patriots paid for their stadium and continue to pay all upgrade costs. They just finished an expensive upgrade.

There also is a train stop on the property. Even though it is a commuter line, it’s not busy. The hours kinda suck. But, better than nothing.

ChickenLadyLovesLife,

Their original stadium (Foxboro) cost an incredibly-low $7 million to build circa 1970. Rather than building a bowl-like structure fully above ground like conventional stadiums, they instead dug a stadium-shaped hole in the ground and filled it with seats - a really practical way to do something like this, as long as you don’t mind the flooding.

MedicPigBabySaver,

I remember it well. Shoveled snow out of the stands with FHS groups for $$.

Then Kraft built Gillette for $325 million. Just spent millions more on upgrades.

angrymouse, (edited )

As a non north-american I never understood this franchise system. How could you cheer for a team that will move anytime to a city more profitable? In Europe and latin america, if your city sucks, is becoming poor or so, the team will fall to the second division and will deal with that cause they are from that city, cause they are a club, not a franchise. For me this makes much more sense.

doublejay1999,
@doublejay1999@lemmy.world avatar

As much a love to bash the yanks, it’s not just them any more .

You could take any of the top 10 brands in European football, move the stadium anywhere in the world, and no one would notice but for a handful Of die hards.

If Man City moved to Dubai tomorrow, would that really surprise you ?

If Real Madrid moved to Florida , Liverpool to Beijing, ? Your left with 10,000 pissed off locals, but that’s nothing when you’re a global brand.

angrymouse, (edited )

You have a great point, but for me it is still too much conjectures, but looking to theses conjectures I still disagree. Moving to another country would destroy those teams, cause they aren´t just the teams, Liverpool actually is a global brand but it is the Liverpool that plays in the premier league and have their rivalries, leaving UK would mean leaving all these parts of the brand behind. It is also a very different scenario, those teams in US move to other cities in the same country and still compete in the same tournament keeping a lot more of their previous brand.

For me your example would be much closer to MLB, NBA, NFL and MLS if you thought about Liverpool goint to Bristol, for example. In this scenario I can see better your point but I still think that the club would lose a lot of their capital and the brand would suffer with the ridicule of the situation for the average football fan. But it is just another opinion based in my previous opinions.
