Historically, Santa was a devil figure in Finland.

The original character Nuttipukki was an evil spirit that would go from door to door demanding presents and leftovers from the yule feast.

It later turned into Joulupukki which gave gifts instead of taking them.

Eventually that turned into the classic Coca-Cola Santa, but you can still find goats as Christmas decoration in Finland and Sweden.

The trouble is that my workload doesn’t decrease with an amount equivalent to the outage time. I still have the same tasks to accomplish, so if the network is down for half a day, it just means I have half a day less to get my work done and meet my deadlines.

hemko,

Yeah basically this. It’s not half a day off, it’s a half a day work that needs to be done later anyways

makyo,

Hr. Hall is the guy who produces machines and you have to run around him to start the process.

FlexibleToast, in Happy Kwanzaa

Honestly, Halloween is becoming as bad as Christmas. Just like the Christmas season is far too long, I’ve noticed Halloween is creeping longer and longer. It has a long way to go before it’s at Christmas levels, but during the Halloween season, it is starting to feel just as pervasive. Halloween themed decorations, movies, parties, etc… Halloween to Millenials feels a lot like Christmas was to Boomers. Always chasing that dream of bigger, better, perfect.

True an hour is the minimum

Ulvain,

I mean really! Take the camembert out of the fridge and in a half hour it barely has the time to warm up, what kind of lunch is that!

Do tell. What’s Classic flavour?

TheTetrapod,

Just salt and potato.

Mr_Blott,

Interesting. We call them “ready salted” because when they were invented, they used to come unsalted, but with a little salt cellar to accompany them

That’s why I log in as root and edit all files to have open permissions. Next I disable all security settings and kernel security mitigations.

After that my system is finally mine.

Agent641,

You can’t spell ‘yours’ without ‘ours’, comrade.

Honytawk,

But you can say ‘yours’ without saying ‘ours’, cause English is 3 languages in a trench coat.

sudo chmod -R a+rw /

psud,

I’m picturing all the services complaining their keys are insecure, their configs are insecure

cows_are_underrated,

What does the a+rw part does? I guess the r is for recursively changing the permissions.

SorryQuick,

Add read/write permissions to all. -R is the recursive part.

BestBouclettes, (edited )

Here is the breakdown:

  • chmod is the command to change the mode of the files (-rwxrwxrwx)
  • -R is the recurse flag,
  • a means “all”, you can also have u, g or o (respectively user, group and others) instead.
    • is add (you can remove with -),
  • rw is the permissions (rw of rwx)

I prefer changing permissions this way instead of using absolute values (0777 for instance) as it’s easier to reverse if you made a mistake.

One way ticket to destroy your filesystem. You’ll fear launching any app in case it overwrites something important. Don’t do this.

BestBouclettes,

You can easily fix it with : sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root /

Ergo, national parks and meth. Also illegal weed grows.

Anticorp,

My friend and I stumbled across a pot farm once while riding dual sports on fire roads up in those mountains. This was back when marijuana was still illegal. We got the fuck out of there as quickly as we could.

xia, in Did someone say history memes?

It’s a clever torch stand. If it’s empty, you put your (long) torch in the top hole (stabilized by the bottom hole). If there is already one, you slide it two notches down instead and pivot the whole device (so it’s balanced). Same with the third, but pick/pivot out of plane with the others. Works with one hand, keeps houses from burning down, great widget.

LordOfTheChia,

It’s obviously a dry spaghetti measuring device. /s
