dustyData, (edited )

Famously, and in formal completion of Cunningham’s law disapproval. Cunningham has never said that, and actually disagrees with the aphorism, he’s been quoted qualifying it as a misquote and a proof of misinformation spread on the internet in complete self-defeating disprove.

Furbag, in Then and now

People seem to forget that before YouTube partnered with content creators people just kinda… uploaded stuff that they were passionate about. They didn’t do it for a living and they did not expect payment but might have asked for donations if their channel was costly to run. Sure, the production value and editing quality was a lot lower, but the core experience was still the same.

This is why I flatly reject the notion that me blocking ads on YouTube hurts content creators in any meaningful way, especially now that almost all of them are partnered with some kind of sponsor embedded in the video.

rbesfe,

The core experience was definitely not the same, what are you talking about? Yeah sure if you just wanted entertainment maybe, but educational content for example requires so much research and double checking that it wouldn’t be possible without ad money.

I’m not saying that blocking ads makes you a bad person (I did it too before I could afford premium), but it does have a measurable effect and pretending it doesn’t is stupid.

Furbag,

Yeah sure if you just wanted entertainment maybe, but educational content for example requires so much research and double checking that it wouldn’t be possible without ad money.

Research did not begin when YouTube started paying people to upload to their platform. It was already being done. It might be more accessible to people who only do YouTube and do not get grant money for their research, but saying research wouldn’t be possible without ad money is nonsense.

Also, adding a financial incentive to upload as many videos as possible to get as many clicks and views as possible doesn’t sound like the way you encourage truthful, factual, and well-researched educational content to get shared. If anything, it would encourage a lot of low effort clickbait, misleading titles and thumbnails, opinion pieces, “edutainment” and poorly sourced material mass produced for a wide audience. Not saying that’s what happened, I’m sure there are plenty of channels that exist now thanks in part to ad revenue helping them get started and/or continue posting at regular upload intervals, but the Cobra Effect is real and people will always be finding ways to take the path of least resistance to getting their payout.

Agent641,

I still use it that way. Any time ive had a problem that wasn’t adequately explained by youtube or elsewhere, if I solved it myself, Id make a simple YT tutorial for it and upload it.

thisNotMyName,

Interesting read

Stamets, (edited )
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I didn’t hear it anywhere, its personal experience. Spotify straight up isn’t shuffling any of my older liked music. Everytime I hit shuffle it always ends up localized around recently saved music and it never changes. Moreover, that’s a blogpost from a decade ago. Spotify changes stuff constantly. I seriously doubt that is the same algorithm they’re using now. ESPECIALLY considering they’ve introduced ‘Smart Shuffle’ which doesn’t only shuffle music you have saved but adds completely new music into the mix as well. That and Spotifys overall quality control has dropped drastically in the past decade.

nyctre, (edited )

I’ve got thousands of liked songs and I get a nice variety of old and recent stuff. From last month to as old as 8 years ago. Sometimes I get too many songs from the same band, sure, but when you’ve got 50-100 songs from the same band liked, that’s bound to happen

emeralddawn45,

Yeah I’ve got like 8000 and there have been times when it feels like it’s focusing on newly added stuff, but older stuff definitely does pop up and I feel like it’s a pretty good mix. 90% of the time I’ve just got my whole library on shuffle unless I’m actively looking for new stuff to add.

fishos,
@fishos@lemmy.world avatar

While I can agree with others that it might not be that strict and they may get more variety, from personal experience, my 700+ song playlist tends to focus on a handful of songs. Blue - Eiffel 65 gets a CRAZY amount of playtime for some reason. It’s a running joke with my carpool that it’s my car’s theme song. I can sometimes skip it 2-3 times on my drive to work. And some songs seem to never come up. I’ve been having some better luck with the AI DJ lately, although it will throw in an entire chunk of songs I don’t even care about as basically ads.

SlikPikker,

That song is probably cheap for them to play

Virock,

I use Virtual Shuffle to force Spotify to play truly random tracks https://shuffle.virock.org

dangblingus,

Yeah okay, so they use the Fisher Yates algorithm. Then how the fuck in my playlist of 1000 songs am I CONSTANTLY getting hit with multiple songs by the same artist? Once in a while, okay, that’s statistically likely, but not all the time, and not every time.

snowe,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

how many songs by the same artist do you have in that playlist? Your comments here don’t make sense. Repeating the same artist doesn’t make something not random and definitely doesn’t make it “the most 100 recently saved songs”. In fact repeating the same artist makes it quite likely that it is random as randomness is frequently misinterpreted as non-random if you would have read the article I linked you would understand that.

normalexit,

This drives me crazy. An iPhone 15 pro max with 256gb of storage is 1199 and the 512gb is 1399.

So $200 for an extra 256gb. Meanwhile a fast, name brand, 1tb micro SD card is about $100.

Not to mention if your screen gets fucked you can remove the card and have all your photos / movies instantly

Why not both! I love SD but its also pretty handy I can access photos from my PC without needing any further action (I refer mostly to OneDrive right now) SD still rules tho.

betterdeadthanreddit,

I was imagining a computer-literate sovcit trying their buffoonery with websites. Some do exist and probably have a couple decades of being the “smart” one since they know how to program a VCR (at least among their crowd of VCR-recognizing buddies) even though they’ll still call the whole desktop computer a CPU.

They’re dangerous because, like religious nuts or law misinterpreters, it’s another complex subject they can incorporate into hand-wavey explanations you can boil down to “Tech works in mysterious ways”.
