Poppa_Mo, in in Australia, when we pay taxes, we get a receipt. The receipt shows what our taxes were spent on

Mannnn… I wish we had this in the U.S. Unfortunately it would ruin a lot of the propaganda forced down our throats, disabling some talking points for our dumbass politicians.

They’d never give us something so comprehensive.

sin_free_for_00_days,

You can go here and get something pretty close to OP’s posting.

I’m surprised so much money is going towards disability, what kind of stuff do they get?

hanni,

Helpers, workers, special housing, apecial Beds and equipment. Some have 24/7 care.

hanni,

Some need 24/7 care. Not sure what people in australia are getting.

Jolan,

Yeah that makes sense I guess, I just wasn’t expecting it to be so much. But that’s good that there’s such a good support structure available.

billstickers,
@billstickers@aussie.zone avatar

What @hanni said. But they also split out the unemployment payment as the disability support payment. So it’s all the disabled pension too.

t0lo,

Australian support services can be quite broad. I know a lot of people with minor or self diagnosed issues that receive disability payments

crossover,

My guess is this is mostly support payments for people who are unable to work.

birbboidaseed,

There is a whole department dedicated to the assessment and allocation of funding for the disabled under 65 y.o. If you’re over 65 then it became the aged pension.

Peepolo, in in Australia, when we pay taxes, we get a receipt. The receipt shows what our taxes were spent on

We get this in the UK too 👍.

do we?? i don’t think i’ve ever had one of these. do you have to apply for one or can you access it online?

Darkard,

You will get one with your council tax bill that will cover your local constituency. But I’ve never seen one for my tax as a whole.

brap,

I’ve seen it on the council tax statement but not otherwise.

PineapplePartisan, in Worlds largest brain bank contains 10000 brains
@PineapplePartisan@lemmy.world avatar

I was so interested in this that I called them to ask how much 100g of brain would cost. They said €10. I thought this was a bargain so I said I’d take 100g of Portuguese brain. They said it would cost €10,000. I said “WTF, you said €10”. They responded “Do you know how hard it is to find 100g of Portuguese brain”.

indomara, in At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book—one page at a time, by hand.

Today I learned that firefox doesn’t like to play certain types of mp4 files. I also learned that you can copy a video link and paste it into VLC media player and it will play!

Watching these books being archived is amazing, I would love to do this!

papalonian,

I also learned that you can copy a video link and paste it into VLC media player and it will play!

You can also use this trick to download YouTube videos without the need of a 3rd party website!

  1. Copy the URL of the YouTube video you wanna download
  2. VLC / Media / Open network stream… And paste your URL
  3. Once the video has opened, Tools / Media Information
  4. Copy the URL in the “Location” field and paste it into your web browser, you should have the option to save the video

It’s a couple of steps but once you memorize what you need to do it’s a million times faster (and I’d wager equally times as private) than finding one of those websites to give you a link.

emptyother, in At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book—one page at a time, by hand.

How do you reliably turn pages that fast without accidentally grabbing two pages and skipping? Im impressed!

intensely_human,

Meditation practice helps with this kind of thing.

It makes the whole thing look like some kind of ergonomic laptop keyboard, with that egg on top being the mouse clit.

I’d like to see a computer user in 1985 try to parse this.

i_dont_want_to, in Number of natural waterfalls in each state

Neat, thanks for sharing.

For instances like Rhode Island (5) and Florida (4), the map groups them in the same range, even though Florida is far larger than Rhode Island. I wonder how it would change the map to have the scales be determined by density, like waterfalls/km^2.

MacNCheezus,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Good point.

SinningStromgald, in The "Margaritaville" cruise ship is up for sale if anyone wants it.

Genuinely curious how much a branded cruise ship goes for.

TrueStoryBob,

Just like cars, it depends on age and condition. Usually tens of millions, but it’s all about how well the ship has held up, how many passengers it can accommodate, and if it has special features like being rated for ice.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

…like being rated for ice

That might be a fun cruise. On an ice breaker through the arctic.

TrueStoryBob,

They have those!

cmbabul,

I feel like the real cost would be fueling, maintaining, and staffing it
