Could you elaborate about which economic takes you’d want to criticize in this comment section, or did you mean to use a different term?

Terrorists and Religious zealots (a Venn diagram which is nearly a perfect, single circle) will never recognize basic humanity, because power and control are more important than any human life. To expect peace in a land claimed as sacred by multiple groups is simply guaranteeing unending violence.

sqgl,

Bibi is in power because of religious zealots (and just under half of Israel hated him for it).

onkyo,

Except literally the hundreds of years those same religions lived peacefully together during ottoman rule…

sqgl,

Was it with an iron fist though? Genuine question because I know zero about that period.

I wouldn’t say it was exactly paradise but many jews fled to the ottoman empire to avoid european prosecution. The region was centralised or more autonomous depending on the era I think

Indeed. A relatively lightly administered area which was predominantly (3/4) Muslim. Then Britain took it over following WW1 and said "The Zionists supported us during the war so we're going to carve out a Jewish homeland in this space where they say they used to live a couple millenia ago and we're going to pretty much ignore that there's someone already living there."

Now you have people displaced who felt their homeland was taken and people transplanted who believe their homeland is due them and the most extreme factions have guns and bombs to argue about it. There is no solution where Israel remains and stays at peace with it's neighbors, some of whom were displaced to make space or Israel.

It saddens me that this is the case. My great grand-parents were Jewish and fled the pogroms in western Russia to come to the US. Zionists are a stain on our religion.

Probably because the Ottoman empire would just crush everyone’s cock with a rock if they so much as started anything. I highly doubt anyone around there voted for the Ottoman empire to occupy their lands and take their resources, haha.

Generally, strongman rule makes things pretty peaceful. Vlad the impaler had a low crime rule, but he also impaled 20,000 enemy troops in a “Forest of the imapaled” and also impaled any criminals, which somehow kept crime remarkably low. But it wasn’t exactly a happy rule, and people cheered when he was eventually ambushed, beheaded, and (fittingly) impaled on the walls above Constantinople…ironically by Mehmed II, ruler of the Ottoman empire. xD

He fought the Ottoman empire’s encroach his entire life and ended up getting ambushed and dying stupidly. But he went down in legend for being crazy hardcore (and his wife, queen Justinia too, who was absolutely mental as well, iirc)

Laconic,

For decades terrorism was primarily a tool of secular political organizations like the PLO and IRA. Combining terrorism with religious zealotry is a more recent phenomenon.

Is it just me or is that sentence mangled a bit?

Regardless, I’m glad we’re seeing more and more consequences for these types of politician’s actions. Sadly most of the time, there’s either insufficient evidence or too many systemic issues to convict.

Like the recently leaked police chat, filled to the brim with antisemitism and nazi admiration was deemed “partially satire” and as such covered by freedom of art.

dumdum666, in Top UN official in New York steps down citing ‘genocide’ of Palestinian civilians

He steps down because of his Retirement - not because of the Hamas - Israel war. Suggesting otherwise, is Disinformation.

bedrooms,

Yes I agree it's misleading (and I'm OP). The first paragraph especially.

prole,

“Retiring” and “resigning” are different things. He may have been near retirement age, but the statement he made makes it clear this was a resignation for a cause. With a good reason.

dumdum666,

Quit framing the war as the cause. From the article:

A spokesperson for the UN in New York sent the Guardian a statement about Mokhiber, saying: “I can confirm that he is retiring today. He informed the UN in March 2023 of his upcoming retirement, which takes effect tomorrow. The views in his letter made public today are his personal views.”

So he informed the UN in March 2023 that he wanted to step down and now he did it.

prole, (edited )

So the letter was just for funsies? Seems like he was planning on retiring soon, and that date was moved up for reasons outlined in his letter.

There are multiple people falling prey to Nigerian/Philippines romance scams, thinking a celebrity/influencer/hot person is using an alt account to contact them because they fell in love with them at first sight.

They give thousands of dollars, millions even. They take out loans, sell their houses, lose all their inheritance, all because they think they are special, when in truth they are just lonely enough to believe the lies that make them think their life has any meaning at all.

The way these scams operate and how Trump manipulates people is virtually the same. It’s impressive what loneliness and egocentrism do to us and how vulnerable we can be to the most obvious lies.

adespoton, in YouTube is Autogenerating Videos for Songs Advocating the Expulsion of Muslims from India - bellingcat

What exactly do they mean by “YouTube generated video?”

iHUNTcriminals,

Bellingcat made them. It’s them.

adespoton,

Finally found the answer:

Artists have to submit the recording, artwork and metadata to create Art Tracks,” a YouTube spokesperson wrote in an email statement to Bellingcat.

So they say “auto generated” because the submitter submits an audio track, an image and metadata, and YouTube sticks them together for the user.

There’s no CC track included, no parsing of the Hindi lyrics, no generation or parsing of the images. So at that point, YouTube is really assembling the video track, not generating it.

And Bellingcat is attempting to capitalize on the phrasing to concern troll.

Vodulas,

The point of the article is that there is not enough content moderation on these types of videos. Bellingcat calls them auto-generated because that is what YouTube calls them (they highlight that is several screenshots). They showed real harm that comes from the statements and sentiments in the songs that are being uploaded. That is not concern trolling, that is pointing out an inadequate policy that needs to be addressed.

marco,
@marco@beehaw.org avatar

But the fact that these are “auto-generated” vs regularly uploaded doesn’t really change anything about the fact that there isn’t enough content moderation.

Unless somebody reports things, almost nothing is happening regarding questionable content. (Of course, they can scan for any known copyrighted material with great precision :p )

Vodulas,

Sure, but my take away was that it is a particular issue in the auto-generated videos because they are often sent whole discographies from the labels, so they are getting uploaded en-masse.

Vodulas,

They literally explain it in the article.

The platform uses the term “Auto-generated” since the videos are not uploaded directly by users. “YouTube auto-generates videos at scale [which it terms Art Tracks] for audio tracks delivered by record labels and distributors. Artists have to submit the recording, artwork and metadata to create Art Tracks,” a YouTube spokesperson wrote in an email statement to Bellingcat.

adespoton,

And I literally already provided that answer once I found it.

Vodulas,

Looks like you commented a couple minutes before me, but it was two hours since your initial comment, so I did not expect you to find it at the same time.

adespoton,

Probably something to do with federation timing.

Israel Is ‘Very Sorry’ For Attack That Killed Journalist Issam Abdallah

The Israeli army has expressed that they are “very sorry” for the death of Lebanese Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah, who was killed in an Israeli shelling at the Lebanon border.

Despite the IDF’s expression of regret, the vehicle Abdallah was in was clearly marked as a media car. The incident occurred while Abdallah and other journalists were covering ongoing clashes at the border.

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned Israel’s actions, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed condolences, emphasizing the need for journalists to be protected.
