bedrooms, (edited ) in Top Trump allies facing charges lose lawyers after failing to pay legal bills

At this point I suspect it's a new scam. These people are clearly deliberately not paying their lawyers. Once the lawyers are done, they move on to new ones.

I'm wondering whether the lawyers are complicit – I guess not. But I honestly have no idea whether Trump & co. are generating profits through this scheme.

Edit: so, one way to establish a scam in this way is for the lawyers to demonstrate how they'd defend other conservatives. By defending people around Trump, these lawyers, for example, might be introduced to potential conservative clients. When they find enough clients they call it a day, and cancel the contract with the powerful people who don't pay them.

sqgl,

So maybe they are only performing token work at the moment? Handing in documents late, not bothering to read evidence etc

That is brilliant actually.

Most lawyers do the minimum work possible anyhow in my experience — have ditched four so far.

The very first one failed to write the letter he promised and yet billed me for our one hour meeting (where he failed to disclose costs). I naively thought he was an anomaly. I did win my case with my fifth lawyer eventually.

JillyB,

Wouldn’t the lawyers just do it pro bono if it was a marketing thing?

sqgl,

No, they would then look bad for pulling out. This way it looks reasonable to pull out.

Stupid title. No the USA didn’t green light anything. Russia just wants an excuse to leave the nuclear treaty.

jimmydoreisalefty,

Yes, looks like an excuse.

News on nuclear weapons has been increasing.

I have also seen mentions of Putin talking about leaving nuclear treaty before, I am not sure if it was speculation or credible sources.

bedrooms, in Zelensky asks to visit Israel in show of solidarity

I understand that Zelensky has no choice but support Netanyahu. But it seems Netanyahu's a monster who forces Zelensky call for other nations to join for Israel's psyop on utilizing genocide.

Rapidcreek,

So BiBi is making Zelensky do this?

neptune,

The thought is that the US is implying or directly stating that support for Ukraine is contingent on Zelensky supporting Isreal.

Rapidcreek,

The same thing that happened to Israel happened to Ukraine. Russians have slaughtered whole towns in Ukraine. Zelensky is simply being empathetic.

neptune,

This sort of implies Ukraine is an apartheid state carelessly starving and stealing from Russians for decades.

Yes the victims of the recent attack deserve sympathy, but this is not a blank check for a continued genocide against Gaza or other Palestinians.

They aren’t really the same.

Rapidcreek,

This sort of implies Ukraine is an apartheid state carelessly starving and stealing from Russians for decades.

If that’s your take I think you’re trying too hard,

neptune,

Trying too hard? To make sense of a complicated global issue? That’s a bad thing?

Rapidcreek,

You really need to put a logic line between your thoughts and see if you connect things. Don’t try to make things uneccsaily complicated.

neptune,

I’m sorry, but this is some serious mental gymnastics. “Don’t try to hard but use logic to justify your emotions about supporting a war of choice.”

No thanks.

Rapidcreek, in US Sends Hostage Rescue Experts to Israel and Puts Special Ops ‘Door Kickers’ on Alert

It’s painful to say this, but the probability is that there will be no happy outcome

zakomo,

Since Israel was founded there never had been a chance of a happy outcome. The claim on the land was tenuous at best then and neither Israel nor Palestine ever wanted to peacefully mingle. The fact that Israel is governed by far right religious nuts and Palestine by terrorists also adds to the problem, but hey! whatever works to assuage the “western world” guilt for the Shoah, right?

Kajo,

That’s not true.

In the 90’s, the Oslo Accords was a step forward between Israel (Yitzhak Rabin, and his opponent Shimon Peres) and Palestine Liberation Organization (Yasser Arafat) to find a way to live peacefully together.

They shared the Nobel Peace Prize for that. And it cost Yitzhak Rabin his life, as he was murdered by a far-right terrorist who wanted to stop the peace process.

zakomo,

True but since then Israel has done nigh to nothing to stop the creation of kibbutz in Palestine, and the occupation of land both in Gaza and in the West Bank, and Hamas has grown to pretty much erase any other political faction in Palestine. The PLO shrunk out of any international relevance since the death of Arafat and Israel is actually governed by the far-right. Alas! Everything went very wrong since the 90s.

Now, I am in no way expert in the subtleties of the political situation in Israel and Palestine, but it seems that the peace process in that region will always be doomed to fail.

Kajo,

You’re right, the situation has deteriorated over the last 30 years.

But what I don’t agree with is the idea that it’s impossible to establish lasting peace in the region.

Otherwise, we have to accept that their only conceivable future is permanent conflict until genocide arrives. That’s morally unacceptable to me; we can’t settle for horror.

sxan, in U.S. is sending a carrier strike group closer to Israel and will begin supplying munitions starting today
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I was having this discussion worth my wife last night.

I’m hoping (but will not be shocked when it proves otherwise) that full-throated endorsement now will mean more effective censure latter when the Netayahu gvmnt begins a more obvious program of genocide.

If the US is reserved now, it weakens later admonishment. I don’t expect it to make a difference. Netanyahu’s brother was killed by Palestinian PFLP–EO militants, and he’s not exactly rational about them. He’s also a friend of Trump’s, and that’s definitely going to play into Biden’s responses.

Incidentally, I’ve heard some Israelis referring to the attack as “their 9/11.” I think that sums up how the current situation is being framed by the Netanyahu government pretty well.

emma, (edited )
@emma@beehaw.org avatar

Israel is such a small country that the percentage of population killed in these attacks is greater than the percentage of the US population killed in 9/11. Everyone knows someone who was killed, kidnapped or injured.

So yeah, 9/11 has some accuracy as a metaphor.

emma,
@emma@beehaw.org avatar

Proportionally, when the death toll was at 700, that was already EIGHT TIMES the percentage of population as 9/11. In US terms, the equivalent would be 25,000 deaths through terrorism in a single day. (Source: The News Agents podcast)

Six hours ago the death toll was reported as over 1000 in Israel.

Rapidcreek,

Netanyahu is being blamed for the attack by Israelis. I think his self life has run out. But, before that happens Isreal will enter Gaza and it will be punitive.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Interesting. I hadn’t heard that. My wife manages an organization with a group in Israel; we’ve only heard the “9/11” comment, and some chatter about the reservists being called up.

Where are you hearing that Israelis are blaming Netanyahu?

Rapidcreek,

I did see a snap poll that indicated that, but can’t find it. But, there is this editorial in Haaretz:

“>The disaster that befell Israel on the holiday of Simchat Torah is the clear responsibility of one person: Benjamin Netanyahu.”

“>The prime minister, who has prided himself on his vast political experience and irreplaceable wisdom in security matters, completely failed to identify the dangers he was consciously leading Israel into when establishing a government of annexation and dispossession, when appointing Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir to key positions, while embracing a foreign policy that openly ignored the existence and rights of Palestinians.”

haaretz.com/…/0000018b-0b9d-d8fc-adff-6bfd1c88000…

Haaretz, as you probably know, is the paper of record in Israel.
