I’m currently looking into Plasma Bigscreen as a desktop environment for an open source smart TV, it looks promising.

Joseph_Boom,

Thanks, this looks really interesting

Imprint9816, (edited ) in What is your daily privacy setup?

GrapheneOS for phone. Multiple user accounts to further isolate apps.

Pi-hole as a recursive dns server with dnssec also using unbound for DoT for home network and IoT devices.

AirVPN for my daily driver devices and windscribe for other devices that may need a vpn.

Proton for E2EE mail and storage. SimpleLogin for alias emails.

Try to use FOSS apps and block trackers where I can. Feeder (RSS), Squawker (Twitter frontend), and Eternity (Lemmy app) have replaced all the more popular social media apps.

Bitwarden for password manager.

For browsers I use Firefox with some settings tweaked or Mullvad (if I’m concerned about fingerprinting).

thecookingsenpai,

Question: how do you deal with the fact that ProtonMail can theoretically track you? (At least from the last time i checked) For that reason i prefer countermail

Another question: which phone model would you reccomend for grapheneOS?

Imprint9816,

Yeah as another said, any email provider can track you. If your threat model has that as a concern then you should always be logging into your email with a vpn on.

As for GrapheneOS I think the Pixel 8 series is most recommended. MTE was a huge security boost. The staff also says do not get anything lower then a pixel 6 as they are to close to end of life.

Sims, in want a youtube discovery alternative

Not exactly what you want, but below each video in freetube, there’s an ‘up next’ playlist that afaik are still recommended. You can use it to find similar content.

Maybe. The newest Rpi can I believe.

kattenluik,

Raspberry pi’s are never worth it compared to most other things.

bbbhltz,
@bbbhltz@beehaw.org avatar

Agreed. But, my old 3B is still kickin so I won’t be too harsh.

jasondj, (edited )

The 3B was like peak RPi though. Nowadays unless you need the GPIO or the low power or form factor, it’s not worth it at all. You can get low-spec 3-5 year old off-lease office desktops for roughly the same price point as a top end RPi now, and they are commonplace and easily found in the secondary market.

Hell I just bought a really clean Ryzen 5 3500 laptop for $200. Only had 8GB mem and a paltry NVMe but these are cheap upgrades if needed.

BearOfaTime,

And those mini desktops generally idle within a few watts of the later RPi.

Imagine it’s guerilla marketing haha.

Squid, (edited ) in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

Another reason to pirate

Also if the government do feel the need to “help” parents and the larger social fabric then why not put money into civil dutys classes in schools. Teach kid how to grow into normal adults, the trickle down would be much greater than these half baked ducktape tactics

Yea but a lot might see a boobie, can you image the horror.
Content filtering solutions are imperfect but it’s good enough and easy enough to use at home if you need to.
Worst case, your kid learns to bypass content filtering and sparks a career in IT or something.

You literally walk a block in NYC and see titties.
There’s a lot more extreme content out there.

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

Then just use one of the existing content filtering/ parental control tools for your home network?

I don’t see the benefit of another privacy invasion when there’s already solutions for this exact problem.

Rustmilian,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I already mentioned that in my post.

Then have a nice day, I guess

FirstCircle, in What's the best tool for discovering what your IP is when you are using TOR?

ipleak.net is one that I use.

jvrava9, in Anyone know how to get multiple Protonmail free tier accounts on an android phone?
@jvrava9@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I guess a web app manager like native a would work but I suggest paying for an account.

devfuuu, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

Just open another site.

possiblylinux127, in [Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites?

Age verification is silly and can be easily bypassed. What we should do is just block adult content by default. Most content people want to see is not adult oriented anyway. If someone wants that they can do that at home by just turning off the filters.

Thisfox, in Question about phones: Am I overreacting?

Dumbphones do all that too.

WeLoveCastingSpellz, in Question about phones: Am I overreacting?

get a cuatom rom that is privacy focussed,your concerns are valid, mostly. Though dumb phones aren’t much better

BlanK0, in Question about phones: Am I overreacting?

I think its a bit of a overreaction, but you can always download Foss apps even if you can’t download better private OSs, its not the best but its better then nothing

PropaGandalf, in Does it even make sense to care about privacy?

If you don’t protect yourself they will easily find you because of the information you leave everywhere, if you go full privacy mode you will stick out like a sore thumb and they will find you too but at least they don’t have much info.
