I know OP has stopped updating it but, to me, r/vpntorrents still has the best guide on recommending a vpn provider - www.reddit.com/…/list_of_recommended_vpns_2022/

Privacyguides.org is another good resource.

grubbylarry,

They seem to recommend AirVPN pretty heavily. This comment points out some potential issues with that recommendation.

I just posted a thread on that sub inquiring about it, because I haven’t really seen it addressed by that sub yet. I guess we’ll see what the response is.

I think between daiqo and the users at privacyguides the concerns you mention are well accounted for. To me, this from daiqo stood out as why AirVPN ends up being an easy choice for a lot of users.

“Additionally, there are not that many alternatives left. Mullvad is obviously the gold standard and IVPN follows, but both don’t have port-forwarding anymore. OVPN got acquired by Pango. Proton is a good alternative but not so viable for macOS users. There are a bunch of others but you’ll always need to compromise much more than with AirVPN.”

deepdive,

Hey thank you, but that’s also not what I was looking for ! If you are interested you can read my long edit on how I solved my issue :)

I started listening not too ago, sad to see this go… I really wanted to re-listen podcasts about self hosting, but does not seem an option anymore… But all the best luck for him!

I use PIA, it was recommended to me by a cybersec friend of mine. It’s dirt cheap as well. $79usd for like 3 years I think?

It does seem a bit sporadic. Surfshark seems to be on top above other providers like Mullvad and ProtonVPN. It might have a bit to do with how it weights various criteria.

What VPN is best for you really depends on what you value. A bunch of people left Mullvad for example because they no longer offer port forwarding which can complicate things like bit torrenting for example.

amanneedsamaid, in Media Backups

I use an rsync bash script and a 1TB SSD. I keep media unencrypted, and use Veracrypt containers for any sensitive data I need to back up.

@humancrayon@sh.itjust.works avatar

Media I don’t take as seriously as other backups. Except for a few hard to find ISO’s, I have a Fractal R5 case that I’ve crammed full of all the rando extra drives I have sitting round, and pool those all together in TrueNAS. So far it’s more than the total storage of my media NAS. It gets a monthly backup automatically.

jlow, (edited ) in Deciding between Fairphone 5 and Pixel 8

I have a friend who (just like me) has had a FP3, we were both very happy with it. Not sure why but he needed to replace it, got the FP5 but it was to clunky for him. Replaced it with a Pixel with Graphene likes it a lot.

I’d still still perfectly happy with my FP3 running Lineage/MicroG but my SD-card slot seems to be broken and I’m running out of space. I’m getting a FP5 in about a week, let’s see if it’s too clunky for me as well ^__^

jlow,

I don’t trust e (that name 🤦‍♀️) not sure why but they pulled some weird stuff in the beginning that I can’t remember and at least back when I checked years ago they shipped a weird store that got it’s apps from shady apk sites which is a strange move to push on everyday consumers. I hope they changed but …

Same on LineageOS. Force stopping the app and starting it again helps, but it will pop up again in some time. Helps if you find it annoying though.

ichbinjasokreativ, in How bad is TPM on a laptop for privacy?

You confuse TPMs with Microsoft’s proprietary pluton processor, which is now being forced into consumer grade CPUs from AMD and Intel.

virtualbriefcase, (edited ) in Facebook on separate device

What, social lives? Get outta here with that nonsense and be a hobbit like the rest of us :)

Seriously though, if you’re thinking on a phone I’d reccomend just creating a second profile instead of getting a whole new device. The apps won’t be running when the profile is running, and as a bonus you can usually restrict the profile’s permissions. Also consider checking out web wrappers (e.g. frost) or PWAs.

On a desktop you can always just use the web version, bonus points if you auto clear cookies or have a separate profile.

Edit: if you already have a spare then that might work better than profiles.

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I think that a spare device with disabled GPS and maybe even disabled microphone (can i do that?) would work best. Some of the features on Instagram can’t be accessed on a browser

andruid, in ̶P̶r̶o̶t̶e̶c̶t̶ Obfuscate your content from bots and AIs

Can you create custom decryption keys? I like the idea of an easy to use encryption mechanism for non private platforms.

touzovitch,
@touzovitch@lemmy.ml avatar

What do you mean by non private platforms?

In this POC, you can only encrypt content using Redakt’s public key. That way you are guaranteed to see the content since the key is already installed in the extension.

I intend to add the option to encrypt with a custom sharable key in the v.2.

andruid,

Honestly even this platform, but any public platform without e2e and the direct choice of who to share it with.
