    Nah, it can be encrypted. Fuck this bullshit, we have the technology, I shouldn’t need to log into everything or open every 1/5000 apps to get quick cues/updates. Apple needs to fuck off with the spying bullshit, even the governmen itself (lawmakers like Wyden are saying fuck this shit and shining a light+exposing it) is saying enough in the way it can.

    Republicans/Democrats/humans who don’t want all their private data becoming endless Kompromat should be united on this, they have a hell of a lot more to hide than any of us singular private citizens

    Edit: 💡on second thought, I switched to Never for “Show Previews” and I kinda like the way it keeps me on my toes and attentive to what it could be (anticipatory and curious). Maybe its just as well. Time will tell

    Tum, in Two minutes of DuckDuckGo rearranging & dropping results for the same search; Bing, Startpage, & DDG all unreliable vs. Google :(

    I am not a search engine engineer.

    Here are some things it might be though:

    It could be that the results you see first are cached on their servers, and expiring from that cache between your searches. however usually when something requested is pulled from a cache, the items lifespan in the cache is usually refreshed so it lives a bit longer.

    It could be that certain they are NOT cached at all, and certain sites are rate limiting the DDG crawler hitting them and returning info to you, so DDG takes them out of the results as they cannot confirm the site is alive. I noticed reddit disappeared from the results and we all know about Reddit and their APIs here.

    It could also be their ranking algorithm for results is not as deterministic as they want it to be, it could also be that way by design. Page ranking is a closely guarded trade secret, especially at big places like Google. DDG results will never match 1:1 with Google. Personally, I prefer DDGs results to Google.

    brbposting,

    Excellent analysis. Caching came to mind for me as well. Thank you for the interesting speculation!

    Fenrisulfir, in A secret phone surveillance program is spying on millions of Americans

    Do people not know this? No ones heard of project echelon and the Five Eyes? Not to even mention the numerous other programs each of these countries have for monitoring. Every tech device you own monitors you and every cloud service has a back door.

    Gallardo994,

    Thanks for mentioning Kagi! I’ve been looking for some Google/DDG replacement but every single one I’ve tried had some sort of dealbreaking drawback for me. Google collects all my data and heavily filters my results, DDG provides dogshit results most of the time I don’t even bother using it, Startpage is awfully slow, and I didn’t even get to understand what Searx is as looking for it led me to some random ugly pages.

    Subbed for 1 year 10 bucks plan. Works super-fast on mobile too. Hell yeah!

    And this is not at all what’s happening here.

    lud, (edited )

    As far as I know they use openPGP and that works automatically between proton users but can be set up to work from and to anyone. The other partner just needs to use a client that supports it (like the objectively best client, Thunderbird ;) ) unfortunately pretty much no one uses openPGP so emails will very seldom be E2E encrypted.

    Apparently the Proton clients support web key exchanges so you wouldn’t have to import the key of users that use OpenPGP (if they have imported the key to the exchange) so in theory that would make it better. I have yet to use that functionality in Thunderbird though, since again, pretty much no one uses openPGP.

    I have sent one legit openPGP email and that was to my country’s financial inspection asking for an internship. Unfortunately they replied unencrypted and included my email in the reply, lol. It’s fair enough though, since I used a feature that’s probably intended to report fraud and crime.

    They’re the maintainers of the most popular JS PGP library and they’re pushing for some major upgrades to the PGP standard. There’s no competing standard. Proton is pretty much the only popular encrypted mail provider that actually does interop well enough.

    zingo, (edited ) in Meta and YouTube face criminal surveillance complaints

    Nice!

    Get those f*ckers!

    However, the latest trend in the EU, is to pave way for a legislation to intercept encrypted messages on a government mass surveillance scale level.

    They can achieved this by (pre)installing MTM (man-in-the-middle) software on new devices. Or require a user to install a (Trojan) app on their phone to be able to access a particular public service etc.

    Now, That’s troubling news indeed.

    Edit: The EU is turning into a police state.

    Zerush,
    @Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

    I do not think this will happen in many EU members, simply because they have more important problems, adding that most member states do not even have the means and infrastructure necessary for a control of this magnitude, nor is necessary this proposal from some old people who confuse a remote control with a cell phone. If there is a criminal investigation, there is no problem at all, that security forces can access chats and social networks with a court order. This has always been the case, they can even access the Onion network, but this only in individual cases, but widespread, well, sit tight. So don’t worry, as they say, nothing is eaten as hot as it is cooked.

    Zerush,
    @Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

    As I predicted, it has finally decided against ChatControl, as expected. In any case, it would have been a fiasco to introduce this control that goes against the current legislation of each country and Europe’s own GDPR, that is, a monumental bureaucratic and political mess that required changing current legislation to accommodate this, this is of no one’s interest.

    I will definitely get a spare account, thanks.

    @SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    A long screed but has this jackhole who writes so unprofessionally even reached out to Mullvad for comment or explanation? Because that’s usually what respectable journalistic outfits do.

    They don’t post some screenshots, make inferences without knowing all of Mullvad’s backend, and say “what we are saying is definitely true and there’s no possible way we could technically be wrong.”

    I can think of several ways they could be wrong, it would have been helpful to have any statement from Mullvad, because they might have a technical reason for this (up to and including making sure their emails aren’t disappeared as spam, because running your own email server sucks.).

    Anyway, pretty unprofessional and makes me pretty skeptical of the claims until more solid evidence than a screenshot surface.

    For example, who is to say that Mullvad hasn’t set up their own client side encryption keys? This is an option Google offers for use with business accounts. This effectively means Google doesn’t have your keys nor can read your emails.
