AlpacaChariot,

I’ve always been interested in the idea of canning, but it’s not really a thing in the UK. I know that veg is cheaper and gas is more expensive here than in America but still, surely it costs so much money to can things that you can’t be saving much? Is it only worth it if the produce was in season and therefore really cheap?

AlpacaChariot,

Totally get that. Much nicer to know you’re not eating too much processed crap.

Jealous of the peaches!

moving to the country, I’m gonna eat a lot of peaches

AlpacaChariot, (edited )

I’m in a rural area, it’s really not a thing! Especially not pressure canning with ball jars. People do make pickles and chutneys etc but those are preserved with vinegar and we use kilner jars with a rubber seal to store them. I’ve never once met anyone who has pressure canned vegetables.

AlpacaChariot,

Yeah and we obviously have those here although you could just make them in any old jar and keep them in the fridge. The thing that seems to be quite different in America to the UK is the whole pressure canning scene. We do have similar food but it’s all in tins, nobody really makes it themselves and I’m not even sure where you’d get hold of a pressure canner, you’d probably have to import it.

AlpacaChariot,

HP are pretty awful when it comes to shenanigans with ink cartridges and all that, but HPLIP is great and deserves some credit.

AlpacaChariot,

Boost loads adds from a shitty network though. Most open source apps don’t do this stuff because nobody wants a Lemmy client to load ads; users only ever tolerate it in return for a more polished UI or whatever.

AlpacaChariot,

The UK doesn’t need to be part of this really, there’s one link to mainland Europe (the channel tunnel) and the rest should just be sensible UK road and rail network planning. NI and Ireland already have ways to cooperate when it comes to planning transport on the Ireland of Island.

I say “in theory” because our government just scrapped HS2 phase 2, so our rail network is going to continue to be shit for years.

AlpacaChariot,

Lol my bad. I’m going to leave it like that for everyone to enjoy!

AlpacaChariot,

You’re getting push-back on it being described as an unpopular opinion!

AlpacaChariot,

BY accident

AlpacaChariot,

American English perhaps, “on accident” sounds absolutely absurd to most Brits.

Are you someone who thinks it doesn’t matter if someone mixes up they’re / their / there etc? These things do matter because if you don’t use them correctly people are more likely to misunderstand you.

All of my English teachers were “old” women by the way, nice attempt there to shoehorn in some baddies. Nothing worse than old men, am I right?

AlpacaChariot,

Iran a marathon once but I didn’t raise $11 billion

AlpacaChariot,

In situations like this can’t you get superuser privileges back using grub?

AlpacaChariot,

Yeah and you also need execute permissions to read what’s in a directory, so 666 for the whole system means you basically lose access to 99% of files

AlpacaChariot,

Reminds me of the “plague doctor” greentexts

AlpacaChariot,

I really hope you’re a vet or something and have a legit reason to know this

AlpacaChariot,

Yeah it would be the same, I.e. DISGUSTANG

AlpacaChariot,

Apologies if you’re asking for something different but I recently discovered annas-archive.org which is great for books.
