Critical_Insight, to linux in Steam not launching games - no idea what to do [Solved]

There seems to be something wrong trying to install it. I get message saying:

Critical_Insight, (edited ) to linux in Steam not launching games - no idea what to do [Solved]

Interestingly that file doesn’t seem to be located in the location you mentioned but rather: home/snap/steam/common/.steam/steamapps/steam/comptdata

There is no steam folder at “share”

I’ll try deleting that anyways. I’ll report back in a moment

EDIT: Nope, nothing.

Critical_Insight, to linux in Steam not launching games - no idea what to do [Solved]

I installed DayZ Experimental and I have the same issue with that. I haven’t tried with other games as I have none installed.

Trying to run steam via terminal gives me this wall of text:

Critical_Insight, to linux in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?

It’s copy and pasting 5 lines into the terminal and hitting enter. It’s not that hard. If it’s not worth the 15 seconds of ‘work’ you probably don’t need the software that badly.

Telling people to just run random code they found on the internet and don’t understand is really bad advice.

Critical_Insight, (edited ) to news in Satellite images show China made an apparent USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier target out in the desert

The thing with our current hypersonic missiles is that they’re only hypersonic during the transit. They don’t hit the target at hypersonic speeds. Traveling at those speeds creates plasma around the missile which prevents communication with airplanes, satellites or ground based radars. You also have to be high up in the atmosphere where air is thin or otherwise your missile is going to turn into a fireball way before it reaches the target. This is what also prevents you from attaching a seeker into the front of the missile; that would melt aswell.

This is why Ukraine has shot down Russian “hypersonic missiles” with the US patriot system even though that should be impossible. It is impossible while the missile is still hypersonic but that’s not when you intercept it. You wait for it to get closer and slow down first. That’s why Kinzhal doesn’t really count as a hypersonic weapon or if it does then so does the German V-2 from the 40’s.

I wish I could do that. Currently I’m trying to start a bussines, but my mind just keeps coming up with the most unlikely terrible scenarios that might happen and convincing me to never try anything new so that I can’t fuck it up.

I’ll let you, OP borrow my brain anyday if you’d like to experience what it’s like to live always expecting things to go wrong.

Critical_Insight, (edited ) to linux in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?

It’s not difficult. I’ve installed several apps that way already. I just don’t like blindly following instructions while having zero understanding of what I’m actually doing here. Also, in this case the instructions are unhelpful because nowhere it tells me to install curl first and because of me not having it the first command just comes back with an error.

You seem nice

Critical_Insight, to asklemmy in If humans went extinct, what would the Earth look like one year later?

Agreed. Interestingly the English canal tunnel would be among the last human made structures left after everything else is gone. That and the faces on Mount Rushmore. Old steel bridges would last for pretty long too as they are extremely overbuilt. Back then they really didn’t have ways to calculate how strong they need to be so they just made everything way beefier than necessary.

I made this thread because I try to learn/understand

I have a Macbook, it’s what I use the most. I used to have Win7 on my gaming rig but Steam dropped their support for it so my options was either to go with a newer Windows or try Linux. As all of the games I play seemed to work on Linux with just minor tweaks I thought I’d give it a try. So far I’m really happy with how to OS works once it’s set up but it’s the setting up part that’s really confusing to me.

Critical_Insight, to linux in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?

What annoys me the most with installing apps this way is that I have already installed several and while having been succesful I still have no clue what any of this does. What is sudo? What is apt-get? What is repositorie? What is package? I just don’t know what any of this does and blindly following instructions isn’t teaching me anything. When I try to looks for explanations or tutorial videos I’m just met with more jargon that I don’t undestand. GUI is really intuitive for me as it helps me to visualize what’s actually happening but playing around with terminal is really abstract and confusing. If I’m met with an error I’m completely stuck then. Only troubleshooting I can do is to make sure I typed the command correctly.

Critical_Insight, to asklemmy in What's something you'd like to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new year?

Thanks!

In my case its that I just get stuck into repetative negative thought loops. My default assumption always seems to be that the worst case scenario is going to happen even though it never happens. I’m just really good at convincing myself that nothing is worth trying as I’m probably going to fail anyways.

I’m already paying for Mullvad

Critical_Insight, to linux in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?

Thanks for the explanation. However trying to run the first command gives me sudo: curl: command not found

So I’m stuck right there in the first step lol
