Deconceptualist,

It’s pretty disgusting that here in 2024 they would still use outdated and inappropriate terms like horsepower and foot-pounds.

Deconceptualist, (edited )

Yeah for real you gotta score a running 360 noscope to unlock the dazzle camo skin, everybody knows that.

Deconceptualist,

Weird finding, thanks for sharing regardless.

Deconceptualist,

I believe that resolves the same as

ain’t!(!untrue)

No, dolphins and porpoises are separate families. Orcas are with the dolphins. Porpoises are actually closer with other types of whales like belugas and narwhals. At least per the most widely accepted taxonomy.

All of these are classified as cetaceans though (infraoder, above family) and of course have a common ancestor if you go back far enough.

Deconceptualist,

So what’s in the third panel??? Giant human bollocks? lol

These days I’m most interested in Endeavour and Garuda, mostly as gateways into the Arch world without the headaches. Endeavour seems more mature so that’ll be my next install.

I’m giving up on Manjaro since it seems to lag and have odd discrepancies with Arch/AUR.

Going further back I liked Mint and SuSE and even Ubuntu, but the lack of gaming focus has driven me to other distros.

Endeavour is committed (their philosophy) to no GUI, only CLI commands, so keep that in mind.

That’s actually the first time I’ve seen that mentioned. It’s not highlighted on their website, in fact I had to go digging for this old 2019 article to get some insight on the philosophy there.

I’m not afraid of CLI so this is fine. I’m not an expert by any means but using it more will push me to learn. The updater frontend in Manjaro is kind of inconsistent anyway (e.g. it only shows Flatpaks sometimes) so I’ve often found myself using pacman in the terminal already.

Deconceptualist, (edited )

Cool, I appreciate the heads up and I think I’m ready for that. Cheers!

Deconceptualist, (edited )

Barely any, honestly. I only vaguely recall one or two instances in the past year where I couldn’t find what I needed as a Flatpak or similar ready-to-go app. As a general user it’s pretty great honestly and I’m impressed at how easy it’s become.

I don’t really love any that I’ve tried so far, but I dislike Audacious the least. FLAC, Musepack, and ReplayGain support are requirements for my library.

The last one I loved was foobar2000 on Windows, which supplanted Winamp. Linux UIs mostly feel a bit clunky by comparison. When the window has focus I like to have spacebar for pause/play, arrows up/down for primary gain, and arrows left/right for seek.

I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’m looking for a vacuum robot preferably under 500€ and with a cleaning station. My main concern is that most robot vacuum providers seem to need to be connected to the internet. Are there any providers that either don’t need that, where I can block the internet connection or any other way not getting a spy in my home?...

All of these have more variety and nuance then you might think, at least based on what major US grocers carry.

Mustard comes in a ton of varieties, from smooth to course to whole-grain, or with extra flavors like horseradish or cayenne or champagne. I’ve even heard of bourbon and curry mustards.

Ketchup too is an entire category and not beholden to tomatoes. You can use all kinds of fruits like mango or golden berries as your base, add sauteed garlic and onions, then blend it up with some brown sugar and vinegar for a mighty fine condiment.

And homemade mayonnaise is just on another level. It’s pretty simple to make, but it doesn’t stay fresh long. Otherwise try the Polish Winiary brand, it’s 90% as good, especially on something like sweet potato fries. Mayo is also the basis for aoli and nearly every picnic/potluck “salad” (e.g. potato salad, broccoli bacon salad, etc). Stop buying the Kraft and Hellman’s crap, those are mostly flavorless soybean oil.

I am legitimately sick of Tattooine. Despite supposedly being a remote criminal hideout in the outer rim, it feels more like the center of the goddamn galaxy than fucking Coruscant. The Skywalker saga, Obi-Wan series, Mandalorian/BoBF, even a good chunk of KotOR took place there.

I swear they just teased another video game and mentioned it would be a featured location. WHY?? Use Jakku or one of like 50 million other planets.

(Yes I read the other cynical responses, this is mostly rhetorical)

Deconceptualist,

I thought Knights of the Old Republic took place around -10k BBY. It was very much a desert planet in that game.

Deconceptualist,

Ok thanks for the correction. I should have checked Wookieepedia first.

Deconceptualist,

Rosalind Franklin maybe. Folks have been coming around to recognizing her though.

Deconceptualist,

I am the walrus. Had a lot of xmas cookies.

What are your best air fryer/oven recipes?

My parents got me one of them fancy countertop air fryer/oven things and idk what to cook first when I get it set up. According to the box, it does everything a normal oven does as well as air fries. It can hold two whole chickens or 1 frozen pizza. It came with a rack for things like toast and a baking sheet. I also have a...

Deconceptualist,

I’ll second this. Try veggies, esp. brussels sprouts for sure. A little salt and pepper is all you need when they’re roasted properly.

Then if you think you can safely live with the knowledge that you can make fast food restaurant onion rings at home, try that next. It’s kinda amazing.

No way, Space Time isn’t good. It’s fantastic! Probably my favorite non-comedy channel. I genuinely understand concepts like the Uncertainty principle much better because of the show than I did from university QM.

Deconceptualist, (edited )

My favorites (Space Time and Anton and Dr. Becky) were already highlighted so here are more.

  • I wish they would bring back SciShow Space, but the occasional space or physics content on regular SciShow is still good for a general audience.
  • Scott Manley got known for teaching folks to play Kerbal Space Program but he’s turned to great coverage of aerospace engineering and who is launching what major rocket missions this month.
  • Astrum is pleasant and relaxing with nice images.
  • Sabine Hossenfelder always has opinions on GR and QM that are somehow both spicy and super practical.
  • Fermilab has an official channel with good educational videos.
  • MinuteEarth / Minute Physics is great when you’re in a hurry.
Deconceptualist,

Yeah I don’t always watch her non-physics coverage since I tend to get that elsewhere. But she’s obviously well versed in reviewing the published literature and has a team of folks helping with that, which is more than can be said for many science journalists sadly. So even when I’m skeptical of her conclusions I’m at least confident she’s not just a talking head but actually checked the core papers on the topic.

FYI there’s SponsorBlock if you want to skip the NordVPN stuff. I don’t begrudge any channel for needing to make a buck though.
