I’m still trying to de-Google my life, little by little. I don’t trust Bing for similar reasons. DDG is feeling shady of late. What’s the search engine you all recommend that I can inject into my daily life? Is there perhaps a search engine that is focused on code, or have we just all moved on to AI for searching?...
Most people have extremely weird ideas of what’s considered piracy and what isn’t. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that’s somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not...
Yep. Doesn’t matter that she contradicted her own evidence. She’s a “Professional Witness” so her word overrule ms anything else.
The way it was explained to me, “as a loss prevention employee she has no stakes in whether you get charges or not” but idk I imagine if you’re an LP person who doesn’t get any convictions you probably won’t have a job long. 🤷
They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....
It’s really impressive that you manage to fit both “when it’s our president they’re powerless and can’t be held accountable for anything at all, the poor baby” AND “when it’s their president they wield ultimate power and should be held directly and personally responsible for all in the world” into a single argument.
Usually yall just pick one per argument, because claiming both at once would be fucking dumb and explicitly, pointedly disengenuous. Yet here you are.
TBF, it was also my social life for better or worse, we’d same room all day. I could probably play something with less obsession now but I’m in my late 30s anyway I don’t need to waste my day losing to teenagers with functional reflex times 😂
My phone is no longer getting updates, so it’s time to buy a new one. The hardware could easily last 1-2 more years but I’d have to replace the battery, which is a pain on my phone....
I have come to realise that I can’t just leave Facebook and Instagram without it influencing the stuff that I really care about. Most of my hobbies, interests, friends, clubs etc are on Facebook, and leaving the platform would affect the level of involvement that I can achieve....
IDK if it’s available on mobile, but Firefox has a Facebook container plug in that automatically isolates any Facebook or meta adjacent site to keep them from accessing anything else. It auto blocks FB elements on other sites (like those embedded comment sections or like button sticks)
It’s the same reason conservative Americans are all in on supporting Israel, they want that tiered citizenship/tiered civil rights here for the people they don’t like.
This year we made good progress. You know, Linux gaming becoming better, Reddit fucking up, Metaverse failing etc. But on the other hand Big Tech has or are planning to make some moves. Such as, Google’s Web Enviroment Integrity API (EDIT: they backed off), UK’s encryption bill, etc....
I think decentralization is the key, but not necessarily these new fangled takes like the fediverse which have their own problems.
Just everyone build a damn site for yourself and if I want to know what Jeff Poff is up to I can go to jeffpoff.com and otherwise set up an rss feed for everyone I wanna keep up with. Community sites can cover needs for communities but otherwise why tf do I need Facebook for you to show me you went on vacation last month?
With the guarantee to never time out, I didn’t know student loans got traded like Pokémon cards akin to medical debt.
I wonder if you could get these buyers like you can get most medical buyers, with them not having the appropriate records to “prove” you owe it. 🤔I’m sure that loophole is probably closed for student debt though.
Counterpoint: Perhaps “Don’t buy from evil” is just a catchy way to share a sentiment and you’re taking it too literally/to an unintended extreme to be riled up as hard as you are about it? I see no intent from those comments in line with “fuck you if you give Bezos money” as you imply.
For example: Sonic’s “GOTTA GO FAST,” but in reality, he IS capable of standing around. “Gotta go fast” doesn’t mean his circulatory system shuts down if he doesn’t, it’s just a short catchy way to share an aspect of himself. In that vein, nobody’s kicking your door down if you get the specialized thing you need from Amazon, just saying that it can be beneficial to shop in other ways when possible.
Or “people I disagree with that I accuse of saying ridiculous shit that while they never stop saying it I simultaneously can not point to a single instance of it being said”
None of those gun nuts have ever been able to answer my basic question about their stated goal of everyone carrying at all times -
You’re at a public event, few hundred+ people in attendance, everybody (even just most) are packing. A gun goes off. Every “Good guy with a gun” turns toward the sound while pulling their guns. You now have 50-100+ (adjusted for crowd size) people with guns drawn. How do you know which of the 50-100+ people actually fired their gun?
Noone has ever had any answer other than “oH yOuD kNoW” which, call me crazy, doesn’t really answer the question.
What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?

What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

It's funny how google pretends the music on YouTube isn't straight up piracy and everyone just goes along with it

Two minutes of DuckDuckGo rearranging & dropping results for the same search; Bing, Startpage, & DDG all unreliable vs. Google :( (files.catbox.moe)
Try it with this search:...
I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."
