Who said they’re offended? You were “offended” enough to make the initial comment, they just replied to counter your bad arguments.
And empowering people doesn’t mean discrimination. Especially if the people being empowered are at a disadvantage. Your comment reeks of bigoted dog whistles
Target it how? Tell people in the industry to please be nice to people they don’t like based on how they present?
Humans have biases, those small groups will inherently be the subject of bias. This is the most effective way to counter those biases, especially because having those people’s voices heard will help combat those biases.
The thing I hear the most from people who used to be transphobic, homophobic, etc. is that they got over it when they were exposed to a person of that identity. This would make that more of a possibility
Ah thank you for the correction. However they were not questioning the intelligence, they were questioning the morals of the comment op, as shown by their use of “actually”
Another correction, sexuality has nothing to do with the article. It’s specifically women, trans, and nonbinary people. Which is not targeting everyone except straight males.
What is targeting straight males is the hiring departments in Hollywood. If you read the article, it said less than 6% of directors are women. That’s messed up. A third of speaking roles are women, trans, or nb. They are underrepresented by a long shot.
Empowering is what the goal of this all is. It’s in the title.
Women are not objects or “just for show”. They are people.
In either case, both the barbie girl and the big tiddy goth gf are (generally) of no use in the household.
Women are not household slaves to clean up after you. They are not objects. Their worth is not dependent on how they cook or clean. Maybe you can be learn to be useful in the household.
One is for show, the other one is for sexual pleasure, but neither of them can be classified as good partners (in general… doesn’t mean it’s true for all).
Again, not objects. Not sex objects, not trophies for your viewing pleasure, not cleaning robots. And saying “doesn’t mean it’s true for all” doesn’t make your sweeping generalization not demeaning or objectification. Anyone can be a good partner. If you keep having bad experiences with large groups of women, guess what… you’re the common denominator.
They usually care more about their style (appearance) than anything else.
Another generalization -_- the same people that say this kinda thing then unironically spend 12 hours playing video games or throw a tantrum when their sports team loses. It’s a hobby for some people. And for others, they’re told they’re not worth anything unless they spend all their time looking perfect (like you just did in the last paragraph)
but… when it comes to actually marrying one, usually, none of them is them is the right choice.
I will never understand how some people will say women are sex objects and then shame them when they have sex, all in the same breath. And if you’re kinky or like sex, you’re bad at marriage? That doesn’t even make any logical sense.
You want a partner that will be by your side and cherish what you both have? Go to a market or a convenient store at 9AM on a Sunday. Those are the people that know what responsibilities are and will always be there for you.
Yeah, best place to hit on women is when they’re grocery shopping lmao I don’t know why, but this reminds me of parents telling their kids to put on a suit, walk into any company, shake the owner’s hand, and you’ll get a job.
Once again, this is a generalization… doesn’t mean everything is like I described it… this is more of a past experiences sort of a thing, mainly my experiences.
Yeah, it’s not like you describe. You have to work through that resentment you feel towards these women before you have a healthy relationship. Seriously, as a man who could have very easily become an incel, I’m telling you that the most important thing you can do is to think of women as people. Retrain your brain, reinforce the thought ‘this woman is just like me, they are doing what they are doing for a reason. If I disagree with what they are doing, maybe I don’t understand it. I’ll try to understand it before criticizing it. And what this one woman is doing does not represent all women’
I was lucky enough to meet a woman who is a lot like the women you’re criticizing. And she is an incredible wife and partner, and I have learned so much from her about what it means to be a woman. I hope one day you can find the same empathy and understanding.
I do know something about your experience in life, you communicated that clearly, and continue to communicate that in all your replies.
You’re free to comment your opinion, and I welcome you to comment on what you think my history/experience in life is like. But I will never stop defending women or really any other groups that are constantly harassed, demeaned, misrepresented, etc.
I do so hoping that you’ll be open to learning something new, but if not then at the very least you’ll know this is not a safe space for sexism, others have the chance to gain a new perspective or add to the discussion, and people in those groups know they are welcome here and valued as people.
The cops are fascists because they’re also mostly Republicans. Trump is a fascist. You’re saying the fascists saved us from extreme fascism? I’m confused lol
I can appreciate what you’re doing but I do think there’s an issue in this case.
From your second link regarding the word “idiot”, the term this community is using,
It is here that we start to see the problematic connotations of the word; it became synonymous with “ignorant person.” This meaning passed with the term throughout history, resulting in our use of it today to mean someone we perceive as being ignorant or stupid.
Looking into it further, for the majority of the time it’s been a word, “idiot” has meant an ignorant person. Which is absolutely not the same as having any certain mental condition. Calling someone ignorant isn’t inherently ableist. It wasn’t until (imo) one of the worst time periods of psychology (late 1800s, early 1900s) that it was appropriated to be used as a medical diagnosis along with “moron” to describe someone with a low IQ or “mental age”. Now that we’ve mostly moved past those ignorant concepts, we’ve changed diagnostic terms and started using those old words to mean something akin to their original definition.
Where we likely agree and what people replying to you may be missing is that ignorance is being used as an insult, which is not helpful. And while the community name may be accurate (a community to discuss ignorance on Facebook) it is toxic and low hanging fruit to post an image online for everyone to point and laugh at another person’s ignorance. Especially as the poster may assume it’s ignorance when it may actually be a manifestation of a certain mental condition.
So the community will likely be unintentionally ableist but will almost certainly be toxic and an easy way for people to feel superior to others. So I personally will not judge their use of “idiot” but I will judge those who find this content amusing and entertaining. p.s. thank you to anyone who was silly enough to read my entire comment haha
There’s also the kind of malware that uses your PC to mine crypto without you knowing. And especially back in the day there were plenty of trolls just infecting computers with malware to slow them down for fun. And since malware is just software, it’s all gonna be made differently so there probably plenty that just has bad code.
I worked at Burger King 8 years ago, we only microwaved one burger. That’s the veggie burger, that thing was the worst. All the rest though, you generally don’t have to microwave because it’s kept pretty warm in the heating thing.
Also, pigeons are basically the chicken of the sky. And it keeps the local pigeon population down so really a win win 🤷
Right, conquered is worse because it implies it’s stolen via violence at a large scale. While just stolen could mean taken quietly and without violence. Thank you for addressing the seriousness of the issue.
Stupid easy to adapt the sign into a meme format if you wanted to
I actually tracked the original photo down, and this picture was changed. The original text wasn’t “4 children for sale” it was actually “Hey lemmy users , lemmytors or whatever, lemmy is desperately in need for commenters. Can’t expect to compete against reddit comments. They have thousands of users and and a few of their comments are bound to become super popular just because there are so many of them. It feels like lemmy users are too shy because of reddit popularity. For instance in this case don’t tell me you didn’t wonder whether the photo was real or not and then got afraid to just ask.”
