HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Where are all the anarchists of Lemmy hiding?

For what? Nobody takes anarchists seriously

HamSwagwich, to selfhosted in Could someone explain how to set up a lemmy instance with ansible for an absolute beginner

This is the way

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Edit: (What do you call this dish?)

Toad in a hole is what I’ve always heard it called

HamSwagwich, to privacyguides in What are some good private email service?

Fastmail

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

Just recently went been to a Fitbit charge 6 from a Galaxy watch 5. I don’t use any of the features of a smart watch and having to charge it every day is bullshit. The Fitbit is charge ever week or week and a half.

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?

Wow… Literally nobody has mentioned the easiest solution? Get enough sleep and use a regular bedtime?

Just getting “enough” sleep for a few nights isn’t going to work. You need to go to bed at the same time every night and get enough restful sleep for months so your body is on a schedule. Then you won’t be tired during the day.

If you are, you may not be getting restful sleep and you need to investigate that.

For me, it was a CPAP. I’m physically fit, normal weight, healthy otherwise, but I was having obstructive sleep apnea. Getting a CPAP was a night and day difference, as my sleep is much more restful and restorative.

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Do we have enough coders to collaborate on an extension like this?

I just had a peek at the source code of the plug-in. It’s basically already setup to add another service like Lemmy, as it supports Nebula and one other service with the same codebase.

I think it would almost trivial to add Lemmy. I may look into doing it if i get bored and have the time, but not sure when that would be. Have you contacted the git maintainer for that plug-in and asked him to add Lemmy support? He could do it much quicker since he’s already familiar with the code and from what I saw, it would be about 30-60 minutes worth of work for someone familiar with the codebase already. I may be grossly underestimating that since I did not do an in depth dive, but from what I can tell it would be pretty simple.

What I would do is:

Add a new variable that lets you configure what Lemmy instance you want to point to
Copy the objects from reddit to a new lemmy object.
Adjust the URL and /r/ to /c/

Might have to fiddle with the User view code a bit

But other than that, everything else code wise should be a drop in replacement from what I can tell.

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

Health related bullshit like a “cleanse” and other woowoo health shit, especially when people talk authoritatively about it. Look, Jenny, you obviously don’t know shit about what you are talking about because you wouldn’t be talking about it if you did.

If you need a cleanse, your fucking kidneys and liver are broken. Seek help.

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in Do we have enough coders to collaborate on an extension like this?

I haven’t looked in awhile… But has the API for Lemmy been implemented? If so, it should be pretty easy to port over.

HamSwagwich, to piracy in Usenet communities?

Help me out? I don’t need help. I was using BitTorrent before you knew what it was lol. It’s just not as good a system as Usenet. If you like it, great keep using it, but don’t pretend that it’s somehow superior when it is objectively not for the purposes of piracy .

You are the one trying to talk authoritatively about Usenet when you clearly don’t understand it. If you take my responses as “aggro” you might want to do some self reflection.

HamSwagwich, to piracy in Usenet communities?

No one said anything about privacy, so I’m not sure where you are getting that from.

“Donation” please. Be real. Everyone knows that’s a pay to access scheme they are just calling donation. Don’t be obtuse. Do you get extra access for “donating?” Then you are paying, no matter what you want to call it.

free indexers seem like easy honeypots

Honey pots for what? Yeah few indexers on torrents definitely are. There would be no point in having one for Usenet. Downloading an NZB file is just telling you where to get the files in which newsgroups. Then you can access any news service of your choice to get it. You clearly don’t understand how Usenet works. You pick and choose who you want to connect with. Not so with P2P. You get what you get. Sure, there are blocklists, but they are outdated the minute they are updated.

HamSwagwich, (edited ) to piracy in Usenet communities?

You are paying to use a tracker, which is a central server … So how are you accomplishing that goal? The only way you are getting stuff off P2P is by using a central server to tell you where or how to get it. Torrents are just a bunch of servers owned by someone else… How is that different? Because you are getting smaller chunks from several different servers instead of larger chunks from fewer servers? Seems like you are splitting hairs at that point.

Giving back what you take, that’s what paying money to the server is in lieu of.

HamSwagwich, to piracy in Usenet communities?

Usenet…

No VPN required or threats from RIAA for starters

Always saturates your bandwidth/never slow

Things are available for years, no seeders required

Even the good indexers are free

No need to waste your time, bandwidth and/or space seeding

No need to worry about ratios

The list goes on

Torrents:

Better use a VPN or get dropped by your ISP

No seeders? 1 seeder? Come back tomorrow and you might have your file. Oh sorry, that seeder went offline

Want to find stuff? Better pay for a good indexer…

Oh, while you are paying for the privilege of a good indexer, you better keep your ratio up or they will ban you. You get to pay to supply them with storage and bandwidth. Yay

HamSwagwich, to asklemmy in What is the name of your cleaning robot?

Consuela, for obviously reasons. No…noooo…

HamSwagwich, to piracy in Usenet communities?

Usenet has always been current Gen and superior to torrents for a number of reasons. Torrenting is ass for so many reasons.
