Hubi,

The fediverse is not dying out, don’t be dramatic.

Hubi,

You also have to realize that in more than a decade, there was never a reddit alternative that has EVER hit this level of activity.

That is a very important point that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Lemmy is the largest and most active reddit alternative around. All the other sites that tried to capitalize on the API disaster have laughable numbers of users and most posts rarely have more than 10 votes or interactions.

I just deleted my entire library and redownloaded it.

A lot of my files were shitty 480p versions of movies from the Napster days. Now they’re all 1080p, with a few 720p exceptions (mainly tv series episodes). All in all 500 something files in total. Now just watching uTorrent slowly download them all. Hopefully my VPN keeps the eyes off of me…

Hubi,

Qbittorrent is my favorite client but there are a couple of great alternatives like Transmission or Deluge.

Hubi,

You really shouldn’t use uTorrent. There are a number of safer and better open source alternatives out there.

Hubi,

This one. I used to have a bunch of tabs pinned but having to restore them frequently just became a hassle, so I added them to my bookmarks.

Hubi,

Heresy. It was gods will to not include networking capabilities.

Hubi,

You’ll want to use something like text-generation-webui for LLMs. Not sure if this one is supported yet though.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

Hubi,

Nah, I watch a lot of videos about cars and most sponsors are legitimate businesses and some that I’ve bought from before.

VPNs and apps on the other hand…

Hubi,

These look like late model Stahlrohrlanzen so they were most likely made out of steel with a leather handle.

Should I install Linux on my smartphone?

I have a Samsung Galaxy J3 (2018) smartphone which currently has the stock Samsung Android OS installed on it. I wanted to install an Android “distro” that doesn’t spy on me, like Graphene OS, but I couldn’t find a ROM for it. Since I would probably need to compile AOSP from source code anyways, I though, why not install...

Hubi,

Word of advice: do not do this to any device that you actually depend on. Linux enthusiasm is all fine and fun, but this will kill most practical functionality of your device. I’d say try it out on a old phone you might have laying around but not on your daily driver.

Favourite FOSS Torrenting Client for Linux that has a VPN killswitch?

I’m a long-time Transmission user but I just learned that VPN killswitches are a thing (how did it take me so long!?). I would like to try another client which has this feature in case I forget to launch my VPN client before opening Transmission. Does anybody have any recommendations? Deluge? QBittorrent? Or any others?...

Hubi,

I mean… That essentially does the same thing but it’s much more complicated than just clicking a button in the qb GUI…

Hubi,

Fair enough.

Hubi,

Adding to the qbittorrent recommendations: qb has Socks5 support and and supports binding traffic to a specific interface. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Hubi,

No teeth? Hell, I couldn’t even walk!

Hubi,

This app is great, I’ve used it for a few months. I used to hate dealing with appimages, now I don’t even think about them.

Hubi,

Active is like two days max in my experience.

Hubi,

After that it became “Quintili Vare, legiones redde” real quick.

Hubi,

Honestly, I don’t blame them one bit. People need to keep in mind that these instances and sites are provided for free by private individuals and not large companies with armies of lawyers. I wouldn’t want to fight a potential lawsuit for “enabling piracy”, no matter how much bullshit it is. If the admins of dbzer0 have taken the necessary precautions, great! Just join their instance if that’s what you’re looking for.
