I left the day they made the switch and, after 12 years as a daily user, i haven’t logged into my account since. Because of Lemmy, don’t miss it one bit. The only reason I ever see reddit posts is when they happen to show up in any of my DDG searches. Usually, they show up when I’m trying to seach for info flabout a game or mods, at which point my reddit usage is purely utilitarian. I dont login and i no longer use it as any source of entertainment or online social interactions.
Lemmy reminds me of very early Reddit, which is unrecognizable in its current state. After years of stupid decisions, the overwhelming barrage of adds, trackers and corperate greed, the reddit I found so engaging and entertaining was lost years ago. My exit was just an acknowledgement of that truth.
IMO there’s certainly nothing wrong with going on reddit. There’s still stuff there but it’s just not the same and it’s not for me. They don’t respect their users at all and I’m just not going to give them anymore of my time.
I haven’t been here all that long butI think Lemmy is growing and real growth takes years. It seemed like reddit was this little secret for the first few years, then BOOM! Massive growth and it was a slow decline after that. Lemmy is on the upswing and with any luck, this place won’t fall into the same pitfalls ar reddit.
Remember when they called Oasis “the next Beatles?” Turns out that one guy vaguely resembled John Lennon when wearing those little circle glasses but that’s as close as they could get.
I was definitely being cheeky but there’s no doubt they were a globally huge band at the time. Even in 95-96ish, 10 y/o me had the Morning Glory album as did most of my friends in our chilly little Wisconsin, USA town. I think we all thought they would end up far more influential in the future. Whatever lasting impression they made on the music scene, and no doubt they did just that, I don’t think it was quite the impact the whole world thought they would make back then. In the same breath, here we are still talking about them nearly 30 years later.
As an american, It’s easier when you convert football fields to watermelons and seconds to no healthcare. One you start thinking in terms of watermelons per crippling medical debt, everything clicks. You’re welcome.
Worst MMO Ever is incredible. The time and attention he spends deep diving into truly terrible MMOs is an artistic labor of love. I could never do it but I sure enjoy watching him do it for me.
I love em’. Better than anything else on TV imo. I love a full breakdown of an analog horror ARG or an internet mystery rabbit hole deep dive. And usually because ots just one dedicated creator with no deadline/boss/focus group/format to appease, they have so much more character, charm and uniquenes… There’s no studio who could hold my attention with the cookie cutter slop on any of the streaming platforms.
Holy shit! Thank you for this! I’ve seen many of these already and loved them all. It’s great to see that there are many more for me in the near future again!
For years everyone questioned why literally everything is so overly sexualized. Every plot, every ad, every spare moment when sex is shoehorned into literally everything we see, watch and hear in media. Now, the young adults are sayin, “nah, fuck that” and I dont disagree with that response. I think it’s less them being offended as you’re making it out to be and more just wanting something different besides the status quo. Its unwise and unhelpful to shit on these kids at every turn. Previous generations said the same thing about your generation when you were that age.
I work in the film business and have been on seta making the biggest movies in the world, even some of those Marvel super hero movies you mentioned. And Although I dont disagree at all those movies are really the lowest common denominator, film making for mainstream consumption is FAR less artistically expressive and driven than what most may realize. Indie films are generally far more creative during the writing and filming process and generally dive deeper into stories that absolutely merit sexual content. I dont think that’s what they are saying though. This is about mainstream media and just wanting something more creative than the same old shit time and time again in relation to sexual content. And I think that’s a fair perspective. There’s true art in film and then there’s the shit on TV and those two are nearly completely seperate.
I miss those days of being 18, smoking some shitty weed on the couch and settling in for a new episode of ATHF. And after 20 more spirit journey formation anniversaries later, the weed has gotten much better but not AS or TV in general. That was the golden area. I dont think I’ve ever been as excited to watch a movie at the theaters since the ATHF movie. What a masterpiece.
