Meltrax,

I started therapy a year ago.

I enjoy walking my dog (usually) and sitting with my cat.

I spend way, way more time exercising than is normal or mentally healthy probably, but it’s been my coping mechanism for years and I leaned into it.

I try to invite friends over when people have time. It’s not often. I’m that age where people are starting to get married and have kids and move away.

I’m miserable most of the time. I try to ignore the shitty politics, the news, the cost of housing, the cost of food, the quicksand it feels like we are all slowly sinking into.

I’ve decided I’m never having kids. They don’t deserve to be forced to exist in this.

The only consolation I’ve found is an answer to a similar post to this on Reddit a couple years ago - someone in their 60s or so was explaining that for what it’s worth, the world is always on fire if you only focus on that part. They grew up in the cold war, doing bomb shelter drills and hearing how they were going to get nuked by Russia. The economy has its issues then. The government has its issues then. I think those issues are worse now, but honestly who knows. You have to look for moments of brightness and try to avoid focusing on the morass of terribleness that everyone is trying to shove down your throat. It’s not easy. But the alternative is worse.

Meltrax,

$140k won’t buy you a house in almost any even remotely popular city or its suburbs.

Meltrax,

In Boston, where I live? $500k is an unheated garage.

Meltrax,

$500k houses don’t exist in popular cities.

Meltrax,

Yeah this too. Ads and telemetry. Those make money.

How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

I remember when it was just Hulu for $5 and Netflix for $8. Saved $50 a month from cable. Now it seems we spend more. I have four. Max, Peacock, Paramount and Hulu. Prime doesn’t count because it sucks balls. (Only paying Netflix when next Stranger Things and Squid Game is released). Curious to see what the average...

Meltrax,

SO and I keep the Disney/Hulu bundle because one of my credit cards covers the cost. Everything else we cancelled and I built a little Jellyfin server.

Meltrax,

You should be able to remove all the “friends” that Spotify ported in years ago from your Facebook account like it did for everyone.

Meltrax,

Hans Zimmer? If not in pure skill then in name recognition.

Meltrax,

privacyguides.org has a ton of awesome tips on how to navigate technology these days without becoming a walking data point for everything you have contact with.

Meltrax,

Should oil the brake pads too, don’t want them to squeak.

Meltrax,

Ok it’s not just me then right? I’m trying to find communities on Lemmy that aren’t just doom and gloom clickbait, but holy shit this place is depressing so far.

Meltrax,

Seems a little weird to make your life mantra a meme phrase anyways.

Mine is the motto from my high school lacrosse team, of all things. I was 15, an angsty teenager, the team sucked and lost most our games. But our coach was relentlessly positive. The motto was a Latin phrase that roughly translates to “if you’re going to do something, commit to it”. Basically, no half ass efforts. That stuck with me all the way through until 11 years later when I had it incorporated into a tattoo design.

Whatever intrinsic motivation you pick, it’s gotta have a little more meaning to you than being the flavor of the month on the internet, or it will always lose its magic.

Meltrax,

It’s a one-time sync though. If I want history from what I watched on my desktop today I have to resync.

Meltrax,

ReVanced taps into my history with microg. When I watch stuff on desktop with Firefox and uBlock Origin, I want those videos to show as watched on my phone when I open ReVanced so I don’t get recommended the same stuff. That works.

GrayJay can’t do this. It’s not better. It’s a good idea, but it’s a side grade.

Which YouTuber's voice can lull you to sleep?

I’ve exhausted things I can sleep to on Netflix, and it’s literally impossible to sleep to things on Prime (so I barely watch anything there; it’s not worth falling asleep to something I like, since I might be punished for it), so I’ve started putting on YouTube in the evenings since it won’t wake me with silence at...

Meltrax,

Switching to Bitwarden takes minutes. Export from Google, import to Bitwarden. They have a phone app too which will sync with your browser one.

Meltrax,

Managers of people can be good.

Managers of managers are almost always useless.

Meltrax,

I’m in the exact same boat, to the letter. It’s been great watching interest rates and inflation eliminate 60% of my home buying power in the last year.
