There are school-aged people on Lemmy? I assumed the vast majority are older millennials (with a touch of gray), who are also Linux users, not straight, and have some level of obsession with Star Trek and — God knows why — beans.
A while ago (soon after the Reddit exodus, but I can’t recall specifically when) it seemed like every other post on Lemmy was just shitposting bean memes. I still see beans referenced periodically. But if your experience on Lemmy was strictly highly curated you may have not experienced the beans.
Me either 😞 I’m 41 and I still remember most of 17 very clearly because it was a very good year for me. But man, the years will just start whizzing by you the older you get. Sometimes it feels like 17 was just 5 or at most 10 years ago.
My advice is if you don’t want to feel like you’re getting older (and it happens to all of us) is stay active and avoid monotony. Doing the same monotonous thing day after day (ie most jobs) means you don’t make as many “waypoint” memories - when you get old like me it’s the big events that move away from the monotony that you tend to remember, and if you don’t have many of those big events it feels like no time has passed at all since you have very little memory of that period. We don’t remember the daily commute to work, the endless meetings, etc., but we tend to remember things like travelling or the first time with a new lover or emotionally-strong events like a death or marriage. In short: make lots of memories!
I haven’t seen this movie in a really, really long time, so I don’t remember what the dad actually looks like, but in this frame and at this angle he looks like a weird morph of Tommy Lee Jones and Bob Odenkirk
I’ve been using Kagi for a few months and it has been exponentially better than Google. I wouldn’t have known about it if it weren’t for people talking about it on Lemmy, actually.
While I could hear “I haven’t decided yet” in Garak’s voice, and this is very funny, I don’t think it fits with in-universe Garak. He’s not a psychopath killing people at random — he had specific reasons to kill the people he did, and generally with surgical precision. I can’t see him planning to just kill someone for no particular reason.
I have to respectfully disagree (also I bloody love that we are debating the psychological nuances of a fictional character from a show that ended, what… 25-ish years ago?)
I can’t recall, off the top of my head, Garak ever telling a joke per se. He got his enjoyment out of subterfuge and misdirection - did he kill that ambassador or was he just a gardener, which was extra intriguing because earlier in the show you didn’t really know what his previous line of work was, you just had suspicions. But if he did then it was in the past and it was an assassination in line with his job. He can get off on hinting about that kind of thing, and his colleagues can go along with it, because it was in the past and it was a professional hit, so the people around him don’t have to worry about him doing the same to them. It’s like listening to vets tell war stories, even if they killed a whole lot of people you know it was for their job and a good cause. They can even joke about it, because it’s in the past.
But in this joke it’s implying that he’s just going to kill somebody at random, because he hasn’t decide who that person is going to be. He isn’t in the Obsidian Order at this point, so he’s not assassinating to protect Cardassia. In Pale Moonlight he assassinates, openly even, but it’s for a good cause and it is indirectly sanctioned by Sisko. His style of humour was basically masterful (and kind of dark) trolling, not blunt “har har I’m going to kill someone” jokes. I guess you could infer that he might be killing someone in a professional context, and maybe there are multiple targets so he hasn’t decided which target to kill yet, but obviously it’s a short form meme so there isn’t room that kind of context. As is, it feels like a poor caricature of who the character really was.
That said, the joke is still funny and I have no idea why I’ve typed this much about a fucking meme instead of working 😂
But isn’t that at random? He’s a tailor at this point in the show, not an intelligence officer assassinating targets for his job. Doesn’t “I have a list of enemies and I might kill one of them” sound slightly psychopathic? Garak does come close to being revenge-driven when he reconnects with Tain and rejoins the Obsidian Order, stating he has people he wants to take care of (such as Dukat), but I don’t believe he outright says he’s going to kill them, it’s something much more subtle and discrete.
How far into Deep Space 9 are you? If you find it interesting now you’ll probably thoroughly enjoy seasons 5-7.
If you want to try watching the Patrick Stewart one (The Next Generation) I suggest starting with the pilot / first episode, then the season 2 episode “Measure of a Man” and then watch all episodes starting with season 3 onward. Keep in mind The Next Generation chronologically comes before Deep Space 9.
Yeah a lot of stuff in Deep Space 9 is setup throughout The Next Generation, in a way it’s a spin-off of TNG. Lwaxana Troi is the mother of one of the main characters on TNG, for example. (random fact: the actor is also the widow of the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry). She also acted on the original series, but played a different character.
There is definitely a religious slant throughout the show, especially when it comes to the Bajorans or Sisko, but generally doesn’t act as a deus ex machina plot device. Okay I can think of one plot point of the top of my head where it’s a bit deus ex machina, but it’s still very enjoyable and arguably makes sense within the context of the entirety of the show. Overall I’d say the Bajoran / wormhole alien religion plays an important part in the show, but more for setting / theme and less for major plot points, and in episodes where it is a plot construct it is well done and makes sense in-universe, unlike some other shows I can think of (like Battlestar Galactica).
Have you been introduced to the Cardassian named Garak yet? In my humble opinion Garak (and Gul Dukat, whom you’ve already met) are some of the best characters ever written for TV. The character development over the seasons is organically great, for most of the characters, really.
There is an overall main story spread out throughout the show, which I think doesn’t really kick into full gear until season 4 I think? Deep Space 9 is different from the other Star Trek shows in that the other shows generally don’t have an overarching story, each episode is more or less self-contained, which made DS9 quite the radical contrast at the time it was released.
Lemmings in school, what are they teaching about drug addiction, fentanyl, and opiods?
With the current problems. And meth?
