Serinus,

I kind of expect developed countries would maintain the current trend of being slightly below replacement value. Probably depends on the psychological impact of the snap. People tend to have fewer children when they know the ones they have are safe.

But your point is a good one either way.

Serinus,

Also, depending on your habits, it’s possible for your phone to rarely fast charge.

Android will intentionally slow charge if it seems like bedtime, and will aim to hit 100% when your alarm goes off.

Serinus,

Also I’d rather just have these things in the repository.

Serinus,

IRC at least you have text logs, but I agree.

Serinus,

Agreed. I may not want to mix my discord identity with whatever project I’m looking at. I especially don’t want to mix my personal online identity with my professional identity. I post too much politics for that.

Serinus,

I too want to be a drunk. I think it’s something I can accomplish.

Serinus,

Oh. Right. Well that’s more difficult. Maybe I’ll stay with drunk.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

Serinus, (edited )

Many years ago I was dual booting Linux and Windows XP. I was having issues with the Linux install, and decided to just reinstall. It wasn’t giving me the option to reinstall fresh, only to modify the existing install.

So I had the bright idea to just rm -rf /

Surely it’ll let me do a fresh Linux install then.

Immediately after hitting enter I realized that my Windows partitions would be mounted. I did clearly the only sensible thing and pulled the plug.

I think I recovered all of my files. Kind of. I only lost all the file paths and file names. There was plenty to recover if I just sorted though 00000000.file, 00000001.file, 00000002.file, etc. Was 00000004.file going to be a Word document or a binary from system32 directory? Your guess is as good as mine!

Serinus,

I ain’t going around telling anyone how to raise their kids.

Serinus, (edited )

My take was it should be his decision, not mine.

It’s not though. They’ll never be able to go back and have it done as an infant. Time machines don’t exist.

The procedure is much, much easier as an infant than it is as a boy or teenager or adult.

I respect whatever decision you made. There are reasons for both. But no, he didn’t have the option to go back and have it done easily.

And sorry about the pressure. You shouldn’t have to go through that, and I hope/expect that aspect is better after 25 years.

Serinus,

the least invasive form of male circumcision

Is what’s in these discussions.

the most horrific form of female genital mutilation.

Is there any other kind in regular discussion? When people refer to FGM, they’re not talking about labiaplasty (which would be a more appropriate comparison).

Serinus,

For me, it’s a wash.

It’s certainly close enough that we shouldn’t be trying to butt into other people’s lives over it.

You should need a strong reason to have the state invade people’s lives. This ain’t it. I wouldn’t pierce my baby’s ears either, but I’m not looking to put anyone in prison over it.

Serinus,

“Hey, we’re sending you guys to the moon. You have six months. Prepare.”

Serinus,

If you don’t have a local copy you’re likely to lose it.

Serinus,

I would have suggested just ignoring it for 12-36 hours. She could have waited, or another mod could have handled it.

Serinus,

I hear they’re going to get a lot more frequent. I expect two Katrina-like events in the next ten years in Florida.

Maybe the tenth will be free.

Serinus,

My hypothesis is that when Covid started, the experts weren’t really sure of the long term effects, and they were preparing for the worst.

It’s bad enough as it is that I’m happy to wear a mask when appropriate.

Serinus,

The best executables with malware actually perform the function you expect them to.

Serinus,

I would gladly pay 50p for each video.

Nebula is $5 for a month and half of that goes to whatever videos you watch.

Serinus,

Yeah, but that only lasts 90 seconds. What do you do for the rest of the day?

Serinus,

It’s a simple joke, nothing more.

Serinus,

I’d be okay if it filtered out that “97” year old.
